Silverview Park 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 1, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

1) Located in a nice, well maintained, and picturesque park. The course plays through almost entirely very thick woods; mostly hardwoods with some pines near hole 3's basket. It is also almost entirely separated from other park uses. A walking path goes near to holes 1 and 2 but getting to them would take a quite bad shot, bad luck, or both.

2) Great as a beginner friendly or putter only woods course. Short enough to not be too difficult for new players, but technical enough to keep better players from getting bored. Also a very quick round. Both of mine came in at 25-30 minutes, and if you walk fast I could definitely see getting through in under 20.

3) Nice turf tee pads. Grip was plenty and they are light on shoe wear. Even for those who dislike turf pads, they shouldn't pose much of an issue since there are no full power shots here for most players. The tee pad placements are also pretty tricky on a couple holes, being placed just a few feet from where you would probably expect them which makes them much more technical. Hole 6 is the best example of this. Hole 9, though, not so much.

4) There is a nice little practice/warmup area right by the parking lot with a practice basket and a small amount of space for upshots.

5) A truly wonderful, quality course map near tee one. Navigation is no challenge here, but snapping a picture of this map before you start your round will definitely help keep you on the right track your first time through.

Cons:

1) Despite the technicality, the biggest con here is definitely still variety. All of the holes are short, the longest hole is 276ft and many players would be able to bring just a couple putters and still easily shoot under par. Additionally, four (possibly five depending on your opinion) of the nine holes are lefty holes. 3 of them being hard dogleg rights. There is only one hole here that I would say favors a RHBH shot.

2) The baskets leave a bit to be desired. They are older Mach IIs or IIIs and some of them are definitely showing their age. The cage on basket 3 was bent pretty good when I played and parts of the cage on basket 5 were broken off.

3) Holes 8 and 9 are…strange, to say the least. Both are listed as par 4s on the tee signs, which, when playing the holes, I can understand why as there is basically no line to the pin that isn't just luck. But, that's not exactly what I consider good hole design. Hole 8 is the better of the two, as I can see a line to hit to get to the pin, it's just really tight, and not the most intuitive. It is kind of similar to that super short L shaped hole at BRP. Hole 9 on the other hand is, imo, just terrible. Not really any reasonable line to speak of and extremely thick rough on both sides of probably the smallest fairway on the course. Additionally a shame because, as hinted at above, if they moved the tee maybe just 5ft or so to the left I think it would be a very good, albeit very tight, tunnel shot. But as it is now, it's the most awkward and tight S bend that I've ever seen on a hole.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, Silverview Park is a pretty good pitch and putt that is brought down by a couple glaring issues. More variety in hole shape and/or moving the tee on hole 9 would almost certainly have me up the rating up to a 2.0/5. If you are in the area and looking for quick pitch and putt golf, are a righty and need to learn a forehand, or are bringing a new player to play in the woods for the first time this is a great option. But, if you are just looking for a good course to play, there are other, better, options in this area of the city; Coon Rapids, Bethel, Hansen Park, and Riverfront are all within ~10-15 minutes.

Silverview 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 9, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

+ Tons of parking
+ Holes avoid the other park activities
+ Small amount of elevation change, used well
+ 9 + practice basket
+ Shot shaping is a must
+ All wooded technical holes, my favorite kind!
+ Very quick play
+ Obstacles include trees and brush
+ Navigation is pretty easy

Cons:

- A few of these holes might be frustrating for beginners
- Rough can be a little unforgiving, but it's not too bad
- After hole 9, you have to backtrack through 4 to get back to the lot
-Very little signage

Other Thoughts:

This is a course that I stop by whenever I'm in the area.
The quick play time combined with the shady course makes for a nice warm-up or cool down.

Small...but not without it's charms 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 12, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course is pretty and clean. Mostly wooded holes. Nice mulch paths between holes. A number of shots that require you to shape a line. Tee signage was just discs nailed to a tree with writing in marker, but each had the distance and the general location of the basket, which I appreciated. Tee pads in pretty good shape. Pretty easy to follow (minus going from 2 to 3). Beginner friendly but can challenge better players in a few spots as well.

Cons:

Very short and tight. You won't be airing it out anywhere on this course. It's a shame they couldn't use more of the park as the course is clustered in one area. On the positive, it seems to reduce overlap with other park users. A little confusing going from basket of 2 to tee 3, could use better signage there. Definitely no "wow" holes or anything that could be considered signature (not that I was expecting it from a public park 9 hole).

Other Thoughts:

This is a great course to take beginners or those learning the game, as there's enough woods and structure to make it a little interesting, but all of the holes are very short. For experienced players, this course would be good to get in a quick round if you're pressed for time or want to warm up before going to one of the bigger area courses. Plenty of ace run opportunities as well. It's neither a positive nor a negative, but I did find it noteworthy that at least 4 holes have a moderate to severe dogleg right (and almost none in the reverse) - I guess they really want you to work on your forehand. I'm a RHBH player, so it added to the challenge a bit and gave me an opportunity to work on those shots. Overall, I enjoyed my round but I don't think I'd go out of my way to play it again. If I lived in the neighborhood I'd probably frequent it more often. There are much worse 9s out there.

Very nice but confusing 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 4, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

We loved the layout and the modest challenge with holes generally less than 200 feet.
We loved the mulched paths and very nice tee pads and baskets. Tightly laid out but heavily wooded so we did not step on other players.

Cons:

No signs and no aerial maps online of the new course layout.

Other Thoughts:

Find first teepad behind the pavillion
Second is across the path then you start working you way up the west side of the park, always staying on the west side of the parking lot.
Very fun, once we knew where to go. :)

Very tight 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 29, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Baskets were all in acceptable condition. Safely winds away from the playground and picnic area while being an easy walk from the parking lot.

Cons:

Unless you have an excellent forehand and a bag with very overstable discs, several holes really have no line. Lots of little branches sticking out ready to ruin a drive that would have avoided the big trees.

Practice basket is present but is a bit too close to an active fairway for me to really focus on putting without looking over my shoulder for incoming drives.

Turf teepads were usable but not my favorite. Tee locations seemed to be harder than they needed to be. I could see a fair yet challenging line by standing 5 feet to the left or right but as is this course is frustrating for rec level players like me.

Other Thoughts:

I'm no pro but the second half of this course was unfun, lots of too tight windows for my skill level. There are better choices on this side of town.

Short Tight Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 5, 2018 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Good mix of left and right moving shots for a 9 hole course.
-Kid friendly (I brought my 10 year old daughter and she was able to walk the course and throw every hole)
-The redesign made the course much safer!!!

Cons:

-Only need like 2 discs to play effectively (may be a pro for casual players)
-Some holes have no reliable gap to play.

Other Thoughts:

Nice little course to bring your kids to or to play with casual players. Don't expect to be challenged by demanding shots but be aggravated by the lack of gaps on some of the new holes. Hopefully the course will wear-in over the next few years opening up some better lines.
