Not great but playable 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 1, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Easily accessible. Quick course. Generally open shots to the basket. 6 of 9 baskets beginner/newbie doable.

Cons:

1-3, 5-6 played on a grassy hillside, catch an edge and you may have a long ugly roll. 4 not with first 6 holes -- across the street from the aforementioned holes. 7-9 are not beginner-friendly holes. Not tough, just beginner-friendly.

Other Thoughts:

First 3 reviews are very accurate. Nothing special about 1-6. Missed #4 first time played, and thought course was only a 6-hole course. Found #4 on second time around, and only discovered 7-9 when I saw locals coming out of the small gorge/gully east of the first 6 holes. I almost didn't play these holes since it was past dusk, and the terrain would not be conducive to finding a poorly thrown disc. Steep terrain, trees, brush, and due to my timing, little light! Hit my lines on first two shots, and third broke left into an illuminated parking lot -- saved/made par on each. #9 must have been moved from last review -- it was not across the stream nor in the trees.

First six holes are all played on lawn. Last 3 on undeveloped land. The final 3 are what warranted the bump from 2.0 up to 2.5. If all holes were like them, Southern Oregon would rate a 3.5

Just Who Is Their Target Audience? 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 16, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

I feel like I'm getting kinda preachy because I keep playing church courses, vacation/resort courses, public school courses or college campus courses and I keep asking, "Who is their target audience"? Who did they primarily design this course for? Was this course at SOC designed for their students or serious disc golfers in the community? I'm fairly certain that it was built primarily for student play. So why would they put in a hole like # 8. Personally, I think it's a wonderful hole. The hole plays about 275 to 335'. You have to clear a grove of trees which are about pad height. They are about 175' out and the opening is not huge. For the average recreational player, this is a fun throw. But how about the sorority girl with a borrowed disc in one hand and her cell phone and a wine cooler in the other hand? She has no chance whatsoever. At the bottom of this deep gorge is a small creek and a million blackberry bushes. Discs ending up down here are not being found. I doubt if many even get searched for, the rough is that nasty.

The course here at SOC plays across three separate areas. Holes 1-2-3-5 & 6 play across this sloping hillside. Hole 4 plays across it's own safety challenged area and then the final three holes play through this lesser developed area.

The course has the old school fiberglass tee signs, natural tee pads and very pretty red (SOC school color) DGA baskets with the hard to read numbers.

Holes 8 and 9 made the course for me. Hole 9 is very cool. Start with the tee box with six giant boulders stacked up right in front of the pad. Then the hole is 325', downhill, across a very small creek to a basket set up about 15' up a very steep hillside. It doesn't have nearly the risk/reward factor of the previous hole but it's still an outstanding hole.

Cons:

# 4 throws slightly uphill across two sidewalks. This has to raise some safety concerns somewhere.

Natural pads are uneven and rutted in places.

Some of the paths in the less developed area are steep, slippery and overgrown with blackberry vines. Not ideal for anyone in shorts or sandals.

# 8 requires a throw that many coeds can't make.

The gorge at # 8 is deep, has a small creek and filled with about a million blackberry bushes. Few discs falling in this abyss will be recovered.

Other Thoughts:

Holes 8 & 9 really make this course for me. Take away those two holes and this is just a standard below average college course. Every round I would play here would be highlighted by those two holes.

I played here last Saturday morning which happened to SOU's graduation ceremonies. Traffic and parking were crazy. As I played the course I was serenaded by "Pomp and Cirumstance." And then by some shrilly voiced woman droning on and on.

Meh 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 29, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Only place in the area with real baskets, not wooden stakes or homemade targets. Good use of elevation. Quiet, there wasn't anyone else on the course while I was there. The last two holes were the standouts in my opinion.

Cons:

Poor signage. It was difficult at times to figure out which way it was to the next tee. One hole crossed two sidewalks, a little sketchy. While I played, BIG sprinklers were on that interfered with three holes. Hole 7 could easily swallow a less than perfect shot - steep grade to the right into very thick, angry vegetation. Same with the next hole. If you don't make the window, you won't find your disc.

Other Thoughts:

If I came back to the area, I'd probably play here again. They did well with what they had for space. I'm sure most people who play there are either regulars or play with someone who knows the course so those signage problems really won't apply. I appreciated having a place to throw when I came in town to work.

I'm not sure what to think 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 5, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice nine hole course nestled on a hillside side behind a college building.

Cages are in great shape.

Course makes good use of the space, offering a variety of shots and challenges.

Good signage at the tees, and warning signs throughout to warn pedestrians about flying discs.

It's clean and well-maintained.

Plays fast, with little chance of losing a disc, (except maybe on 8 if you anhyzer into the easement)

Cons:

Erosion and crowd issues are my primary concerns. Many of the gravel tee pads are uneven...divited or pocked...making it hard to find your footing. Couple were pooled with water too. And hole 9 is built right into an unprotected slope where signs of erosion are evident. It will definitely degrade with use. I think the paths between 7 and 9 could use some support...traction and bolstering to help prevent damage.

Hole 4 and hole 7 were hard to find.

No visible bathroom though I'm sure there's one or two in the bldgs.

I think it'll be a drag when school is in session bc I think there will be too many people in the way to play safely.

Other Thoughts:

I played early on a Thursday morning when school was not in session. No one else playing disc golf, and in general very few people around. And I still almost hit someone who walked onto the fairway from a sidewalk running along side. Given the location in what likely is a high traffic area, I think it's probable that unsuspecting others will get hit. Only a matter of time. Scary. I hope people learn to not walk through!

That said, it was a fun 9-hole romp that had a surprising mix of basic city shots and big/challenging ones. The first three holes were amusing short tosses packed in a line down a slope along the sidewalk. Three in particular is a fun hyzer over the road and definitely an ace run. Number four was hard to find bc its off the line and across a street. It's in a strange place between some buildings that again make me worry about walkers getting hit. Number five, back across the street and working uphill, was pretty fun to play and then six was further uphill and harder than it looked because the slant was deceptive. Moving up allows you to really fling whereas the first three that were more touch shots.

Seven was impossible to find and some signage or an arrow would help. (Unless I missed it in which case, my bad). It's also really difficult to throw...a shorty on a steep slope tucked behind a thick pack of little scrub trees. It was a big Hyzer over them or maybe like a tomahawk through the trunks. I tried and shanked both ways. Eight is a great cliff throw and nine is a fun downhill/uphill to finish. I was totally surprised by these last three holes given the relative citiness of the first six.

I'd certainly play here if I was in Ashland again, but probably aim for getting there with the sunrise and ahead of the crowds.
