Cons:
-Baskets made of sheet metal and bbq grills
-Chains are tight and act like bumpers (when they actually exist)
-No tee pads, or tee areas, or signs
-Sandy, overgrown, foxtails everywhere
-Small area with no room for expansion
-Part of a community center, but in an undeveloped section and un-kept, makes the sport look bad.
Other Thoughts:
South Bay Community Center Park is a lovely facility with a playground, community center, large grass area, and tennis court. Unfortunately, it is also home to an abysmal disc golf course in a forgotten back area of the complex. There were 5 baskets left with various numbers on them, one of them apparently being hole 5 and 8.
Having no tee pads, and no basket marked #1, we knew immediately that we would not be playing a 'course,' but we did stick around and chuck discs for an hour in order to get a feel for the place. Basically, we would throw discs at one basket, then choose another one to throw at.
Some fun variations we were able to come up with was including the giant, sloped grass field in our 'course,' which allowed for a nice, wide open downhill throw to hole #2. The locals at the top of the hill were very impressed with the sport and said they hang out there all the time and had never seen it. We also threw from the street nearby, which added some distance and an uphill slope.
The nice grassy area aside, this place is a dump and should just be pulled. High weeds everywhere coupled with unfavorable footing is just not an enjoyable experience. The baskets are dangerous, the piece of land is flat and has some OB issues surrounding it, and now that there is a disc-on-ball-golf-course nearby there is a real opportunity to play some actual disc.
Should somebody come in and take care of this place, replace the baskets completely, do something about the foliage, and perhaps add an obstacle or two, this property could be home to a solid 2 rated course.
