Spartacus Smiles As You Heave Your Discus

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 1, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

18 holes sprawled around the middle school, high school, and small city park in between, Spartan Ridge really makes use out of the land it has – for better and for worse.

Concrete tees, DD tee signs, and 18 personalized Veteran Baskets. A short tee on 18 if you don't want the long bomb down to the water.

Elevation making the course tougher, but not unfair. Downhills on 2 and 4 to greens backed by thick brush (takes away some of the risk), Huge changes down on 9 and up on 10. 8 takes you uphill for 350, then the last 150 is slightly downhill. The 500ft downhill blast on 18 with the reservoir making those who can reach the green think twice about running it is a nice risk/reward touch.

The water bordering hole 1. 13, and 14's left side, as well as behind the green of 2/4, and as mentioned above on 18, is a touch of added difficulty which can mess with your mentality even when it isn't a huge danger (on 13 and 14)

Some challenging greens. 6 pocketed into the trees after your max-distance drive; 1, 5, 8, 10 and 15 on steep hillsides; 16 by a large tree that will get in your way if you get on the wrong side of it. 3 and 17 perched near some steep drops making putts risky.

The obvious signature hole, number 11, is a 275ft long, 8ft wide tree-lined tunnel which is just long enough to be challenging, but not long enough to be unfair. A par-3 that would fit in as an excellent score separator on any course.

Cons:

Some very bland holes, 10 is just a 230ft smash into a hillside, and the same goes for 15. 13 and 14 are both flat 310ft shots with rough all the way down the left side. 6 and 8 don't have much spice besides their distance and green. 17's only risk is the hillside down the right of the hole (and possibly going into the baseball field). 1 also has nothing going for it besides the slope it's on the whole way and the water on its left. None of these holes are "bad," just uninteresting.

Navigational issues are present, but negligible if you have a picture of the course map. 2 to 3 and 10 to 11 are easy if you stay to the south of the respective sports fields. 15 to 16 is a bit annoying as you can see a tee, but it's 18. 16 is around the shed to the right. 7 to 8… well, follow the path through the woods, out of the woods, and back into the woods, then once it curves left and you see a tee (which is 13), take a right around the tree line and eventually you'll come upon the tee of 8. Some next tee signage would solve most of this. Not the worst I've seen, but still pretty bad.

Hole 3 doesn't really fit the difficulty level of the rest of the course, being 381ft and uphill off the tee. I respect throwing in a difficult par 3, but the difficulty spike is jarring.

8 and 9 plays near the on-ramp to MO-10. 9 poses a special risk since due to the massive elevation drop (30ft?) a turnover could easily reach the ramp. Very likely that these holes get changed in some way in the future. 16's green is near an entry road to the high school, also.

Other Thoughts:

Only available after school hours (3pm release in 23-24), but on the plus side you can search "Spartan Ridge Disc Golf" on google maps and get directions right to hole 1.

This is a decent stop if you're nearby. Nothing to blow you away, but nothing bad or offputting. It stays out of the way of the rest of the park/school functions well (besides the baseball field on 17) and plays hardball with some of it's features (the sloped greens alone are guaranteed to cost you at least one stroke). Not worth going way out of your way for, but you won't leave with a bad taste in your mouth. Hopefully you leave with all the discs you had when you started.
