Lots of Options for Four Baskets

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 7, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

A course that somewhat defies expectations by being quite enjoyable despite having only four baskets.

-A Note About Layouts: Due to having four baskets, there are several ways to safari around and play this course. DGCR has a 9-hole layout, while UDisc has 18 holes (including the nine DGCR). I think the 18 is more accurate, as there has been an attempt to mark tees for all 18. I personally played (1)-(12) before a combination of feeling like I'd seen the whole park and being on a time crunch led me to leave.

-Elevation: The feature that will strike you first about this small neighborhood park is the substantial elevation. The first four holes feature an up-down, an uphill, a down, and a valley, all major gameplay factors. Furthermore, three of the four greens have substantial elevation where sailing a putt from the wrong side could be a substantial mistake. This instantly takes Sunrise Terrace from snoozefest to fun.

-Maintenance: The park itself is nicely kept, with good grass mowed short. It's a pleasant place whether or not you're playing a sport.

-Creativity: Thanks to a generous amount of space, these four baskets can be utilized in many different ways. The combination of trees, hills, and playground equipment leads to good variety throughout a 9-12 hole round.

-Shot Shaping/Gameplay: A remarkably challenging, but still very birdieable, series of holes with mild obstacles. Hills and slopes are the biggest shaping challenge on the first few holes, with groups of 1-3 trees also playing major roles in parts of the property. Lastly, the playground equipment has to be hyzered around on several holes. The combination is remarkably charming. The downhill shots are especially fun, as you have to show a lot of finesse to park them on sloped greens. Bogey is easily avoidable on all these holes if you have a consistent approach, so it's a how-low-can-you-go type of course. On the whole, I'd be happy to throw here any day. Nothing remarkable, but quite enjoyable.

Cons:

-Four Baskets: It's just not…ideal. It creates less variety of approaches, doesn't take you on the same geographic journey as a good course, and limits the scenery. Mind you, this is the best possible use of the park's space for disc golf, but it's still an annoying limitation.

-Equipment Hazards: Two primary issues. First, if anyone wants to use the playground, disc golf is off limits on a number of key routes that utilize three of the four baskets. Second, the park slopes off substantially towards the road, which could see shots easily find the street (many of these are blind approaches as well). I went into the street twice myself, and was lucky not to hit any cars parked on the curbs.

-Drainage: The low section of the course, a big valley between basket (3) and baskets (2) and (4), doesn't seem to get dry. It was gross and muddy on my visit.

-Multiple Groups: It was pretty difficult for me to play with just one twosome sharing the course. Since the layout basically plays every basket to every other basket at some point, you're going to be crossing paths. Proceed with caution.

-Tee Markings: Some tee markings were clear and complete, with distance and number information. Some markings were just brackets spray-painted on the ground. Some didn't exist. A little more clarity here would be appreciated.

-Variety: After about six or seven holes, it all begins to feel the same. This is no dig at the designers, it's just a reality of reusing the same land over and over.

Other Thoughts:

On my El Paso - Tucson drive, this was virtually the only option for New Mexico, and I definitely dreaded it after reading that there were only four baskets. However, this was a remarkably well-utilized piece of land that created quite a few fun par-3 holes. It's definitely a credit to Las Cruces. That said, it has severe limitations of size, capacity, and variety. On the whole, it's on the lower end of my bracket of Reasonable courses. A very fun play, but not one to get your hopes up high for either.

-Amenities: Tees marked on concrete with number, distance, and pars. Not the nicest at baskets, but serviceable. No next tee cues.

~Similar Courses: I haven't ever really been somewhere like this that used so few baskets so well. Here are some vague similarities, though -
I've never played there, but the mild elevation and sparse foliage on well-kept grounds definitely reminded me of Fountain Hills, AZ. From what I have played, Jack Mattox Recreation Center (Ringgold, GA); Lenora Park (Snellville, GA); Two Rivers Park (Nashville, TN).

A nice surprise 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 26, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Clean Park
Minimal Walking (if that's a plus for you)
Easy to find
Shade and Trees

Cons:

Two Playground areas
Pedestrians
Kids

Other Thoughts:

I drove up from El Paso TX. to try out this course. I was surprised at how much fun it was. It's spread out well in the little space it has, and 4 baskets are used to create challenging shots. There are clear markers for 18 holes, and a nice variety of shots available; Up hills, down hills, some blind shots, and a couple over Playground equipment.
I was all alone, but I can imagine that it would have been difficult to play if kids had been about...
This may be a course I drive over to 3 or 4 times a year...and it would be a fun tourney spot.

Better than nothing. Not a course for everyone ... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 15, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

- It has four baskets in relatively good condition
- There's a course in Las Cruces
- The park is in excellent shape
- A couple of uphill and downhill shots

Cons:

- It only has four baskets in relatively good condition
- Since nine holes are played on four baskets, clearly marking each hole is a must. There is little to no signage on many holes.
- You are basically walking back and forth in a small neighborhood park.
- Lack of variety of shots

Other Thoughts:

Is this a good use of space? Sure. Is it great to have a course in Las Cruces? Definitely. But is it fun to literally walk back and forth in a small neighborhood park? Not for me. The most challenging part of this course is finding your way around since many tee pads unmarked.

Imaginative 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 9, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Set in a pleasant, hilly park
-Easy to follow with course map
-Excellent course for beginners
-Navigation is required because there are 4 baskets but 9 holes, but this adds rather than detracts from the game
-Short, easy day of 9 holes

Cons:

-For pros, probably not much of a challenge
-Playground equipment literally in the middle of at least 2 shots ... do not play here when crowded with kids (after 3)
-No really long shots
-No bathroom nearby

Other Thoughts:

I come from the desert (Tucson) so this course was a pleasant surprise, as it's grassy and has several tall trees. For someone from the non-desert "normal" climate who takes trees for granted, and/or for a pro level player, this course is more likely to fall in the 2-star range. I wasn't expecting much, but was pleasantly surprised. Several of the holes were either "up" or "down" shots and going past playground equipment proved challenging enough for me.

Great Use of Limited Space 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 16, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course is really well designed and makes great use of the space available. There are lots of obstacles to throw around, pretty good elevation changes, although most of the elevation changes aren't really elevation changes if you have a decent arm because you end up throwing across a lot of valleys.

Cons:

There are only 4 baskets. I played while one other 3 some was playing and because I was playing really fast, and they were playing really slowly, I was constantly throwing to the same basket as them.

No water that I could see. No restrooms.

The course is really difficult to navigate. I brought the course guide written on this site and I still had quite a bit of trouble, even though the course guide is well written.

Other Thoughts:

No offense to local users, but I have to give this course 1 star because even though it's well designed, it only has 4 baskets. If it was less well designed it would rate less than 1 star. It's in a multi-use park that makes it unplayable if there are other users there. I've been to 2 star and 3 star and 4 star courses. This is a 1 star course.

A Testament to Efficiency 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 14, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

A very small but green, hilly, shaded, and well wooded park that works great for disc golf. Despite using only 4 baskets, there are 9 distinct and interesting holes that each test your skills in a different way, 5 and 7 in particular require a very accurate drive to cover any distance at all. The park is clean, bush-free, and grassy, so finding discs is easy (just stay out of backyards), and the walk is very low impact.
The baskets are Disc Nation Freedoms with an added inner row of chains, these aren't tournament grade baskets but catch as well as any other basket I've played (another efficiency bonus point).
One cool perk of this course is it works really well for glow golf, you only need to light the basket on the North end and the basket on the South end. Las Cruces city parks are open until 11PM, so you shouldn't have any problems with authorities if you keep the volume down.

Cons:

The two biggest problems with this course are its small size and that this is a somewhat well frequented park. While most other city park courses keep the playground and family areas seperated from the course, they're right on top of each other here. Kids playing on the central playground force a different tee position for 8, and kids at the western park makes holes 4, 7, and 9 risky.
People visiting the park will interfere with your game, and you can never really expect your odds of playing a full undisturbed 9 holes to be greater than 50%. Those odds drop to 0% on weekdays after 5:15 pm when, like clockwork, the park is overrun by children practicing sports and adults doing dorky aerobics, while weekends are more unpredictable.
Since the baskets are shared and the holes overlap, this course slows down when there are multiple groups playing. Be aware of who's playing around you.
Tees are black baseball-plate shaped paint on the ground, now nearly totally unreadable. If you're not playing with someone who knows the course, bring a map, winging this course is not possible.

Other Thoughts:

My "home" course, and every bit of improvement I've had from when I first started I can attribute to practicing here. This course is much more interesting than would be expected from just 4 baskets in such a small park, and the only thing that could actually be improved upon is the tees, the interference issue will always be apparent. This isn't a destination course, but if you're in town it's definitely worth a visit (before 5pm...)

Great Elevation Changes But Safety Issues Concern! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 1, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a lovely little, green city park with some great hilly terrain to work with. The course designers used this elevation to max. # 3 is a great little 235' ACE run to a basket down in the valley. # 6 has you throwing across the same valley from one hillside to a basket 300' on the other side. But my favorite hole was # 7, It's a tight anhyser, 244' around some trees to a blind basket sitting under some tree branches.

There are only four baskets. They're a brand called Freedom Nation. Two are single chains and two are double chained??? The teepads are painted on sidewalks, picnic areas and in one case, on a drainage culvert. They are black and shaped like baseball home plates. Using the Hole Info details from DGCR, I had no problems navigating the course. Without it, I would have been hopelessly lost.

Cons:

#'s 8 and 9 especially present major safety concerns in my opinion. # 8 is 298' foot across the park and the only obstacle in your way is the playground apparatus which stands directly in the way. It's fairly easy to throw around this equipment but sooner or later someone is going to drill some 4 year old on the playground equipment and his/her mother's going to go straight to the city park's department.

# 9 is a similar disaster waiting to happen. It's 270'. You're throwing to a blind basket, close to picnic tables, playground equipment, etc. When children are present are present, players will need to skip these holes! I know from 33 years experience that players, especially teenage disc golfers, aren't wired to skip holes when children are present.

The wind was pretty brutal on the day I played.

Other Thoughts:

Luckily, I had the park to myself today. I loved the elevation changes and the ACE runs. I hope to see the safety issues addressed because I think this course is a great little recreational level course. I surely enjoyed playing it.
