Honoring Dan Weldon?

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 27, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

The tee pads here are fantastic large, wide, and perfectly scored concrete. The parking lot has plenty parking at this park for a large crowd. The baskets have bright red chastity belts, easily visible numbers, and large directional arrows for the next tee. Navigation was easy here.

The "woods" is an abundance of trees, but more of a park style. Think Brahan Springs in Huntsville, AL with steep rolling hills added.

No mandos or atleast I did not see any (see cons).

Cons:

I hate to knock this course, because it's really a fun tract and is in an area that needed additional courses. Safety was an afterthought. On a Monday afternoon, this park was busy! Too many holes require blind shots up or down hill with a walking path coming into play. Hole 15 really sticks out in my mind. It's a blind shot down hill with a walking path overlapping the fairway the entire distance. Someone will get their head taken off here.

Other holes with safety issues:

Hole 1 borders the parking lot the entire fairway. Kids will unknowingly spill out into the fairway as they wait on their parents to get moving.

Hole 3 throws over a dog park.

The walking path also comes into play on holes 4, 7, 11, 12, 14, and 16. On hole 16, your walk to 17's teepad will put your noggin in danger of discs if the next group doesn't see you near the basket.

Every hole can be a RH backhand throw off the tee pad if you wanted it to be. Shot shaping is not really forced here despite the abundance of trees. Hole 4 the best route is a wide RHBH hyzer following the walking path.

I appreciate the designer not taking away routes with mandos and forcing me to play design intent. The best route on hole 8 is a anny RH forehand from the far right corner of the teepad taking a majority of the trees out of play. Guarantee your 3 or chance for a birdie this way. The tight tunnel on hole 13 can be avoided with a RH forehand wide left, but that brings hole 14's teepad into play.

Other Thoughts:

This course has the land to be a great 9 holer, 9 holer with two sets of tee pads, or a fun redesigned 18 hole course. I would remove holes 1 and 3. Then redesign 11, 12, and 14 ~ 16 to improve safety. Like the ugly DW12 chassis, I don't feel like this course honors Dan Weldon's legacy like he deserves.

There's a pro designer right down the road that can turn this into an Oak Grove, KY that will see heavy traffic and keep people coming back.
