Tidewater Disc Golf Course; The Home Of The Backwards Facing Tee Signs And Pads!

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 2, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

Tidewater is a nice little disc golf course at the Ocean Shires Community Club which sits along the North Bay with it's lovely views of beautiful downtown Aberdeen. I was mostly confused when I started at # 1. Both the tee sign and the pad are facing the parking lot with a basket set on an island. After teeing off, I discover that I have teed off to the practice basket. The tee pads are natural with three 4" x 4" borders, only they don't have a front board like almost every other course in existence. Also, the signs are facing the wrong way which makes them easy to read as you are walking up to them but fairly confusing at first.

Actually, the back facing signs are a pretty blue/white with all the required information. The tee pads with a back board and no front boards are wood chips. Some are quite rutted and rough. I just teed off next to them. The baskets are red, white and blue Dynamic Veteran models. They have a large number on the inner post. The course starts off by the flag pole and plays to a basket near the play area, then continues with 4 & 5 playing with views of the bay. 6 & 7 play across the lawn then you finish with 8 & 9 playing to the corner of the property. Hint! I would always save a few steps by playing 8 & 9 at the same time instead of backtracking to the # 9 tee pad.

My favorite hole here was # 4. It's a very short little anhyser shot to a basket just visible by a large tree. The scariest hole is # 5. It's just a straight 164' throw to the basket but the bay looms very large and foreboding on your left side. A really errant hyser could end up said bay at high tide. If that's not a fact, the humongous bay will still strike fear in many of the rec players frequenting this course.

With only one hole playing over 200' (# 8 at 208') and little in the way in obstacles, Tidewater is an easy Rec course all day long. But like it's fellow Ocean Shores twin sister course, Cougar Crossing, it is a fun little throw.

Cons:

Total recreational length and challenge.

Wood chip tee pads are never a good idea.

Most tee signs face the wrong direction but you'll quickly adjust.

A back board instead of a front board is confusing at first but then becomes a non-issue.

Course doesn't loop back but it isn't very far either.

Other Thoughts:

It's kinda funny how similar these two Ocean Shores courses are. They're both easy recreational courses, both only have one hole over 200', both are well designed 9's and both are most enjoyable.

If you're ever in Ocean Shores and get tired of the gray skies, constant wind, sand in all the wrong places and over-priced touristy activities, give both of these courses a ride. You won't be challenged but you'll probably have a grand time. If not, go rent a moped, horse or electric bike. They're fun too!

Well done course in a small place 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 5, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

Small course with a variety of holes that allows for all skill levels to enjoy. Land around the Community Center is well kept at all times of the year.

Cons:

Wind will be the enemy of this course for beginners, especially on the holes near the water.

Other Thoughts:

Course plays around the Community Center, in a park-like setting. All the holes are short, basic shots of varying difficulty. Hole 1 plays from the entrance area towards the right side of the playground, so use caution, and hole 6 plays back towards the same area later on. Holes 2 thru 5 are the more technical holes, short but needing precision. Hole 5 is played parallel to the water and a path, and with the addition of wind it is a tricky shot. Hole 6 plays away from the water, back towards the play area, so look ahead. Holes 7 thru 9 play from the backside of the community center back towards the water, with no obstructions, but don't go long! Wind obviously will be a deciding factor in the difficulty of this course, due to it's location. Overall, this a great little course, in a location (Ocean Shores) of high-demand real estate, and deserves to be judged accordingly. I'm giving it 3 rating because it's a good, solid, small course that is well kept, and takes advantage of some of the best parts of only a couple of acres of land.
