A must play 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 22, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Beautiful course with 27 holes and 3 pin placements that are alternated regularly. There are hand painted signs on every hole and a pin indicator to let you know what position the pin is in. The course offers holes with various difficulty, every hole has it's own challenge. There are public bathrooms, water fountains, and clearly labeled paths to the next holes. Every time I was there there were players that would let me in their group since I was solo.

Cons:

Someone at the course for the first time might get a little lost at hole 7 or 8, I forget which one, if not both. Just ask someone will help you.
I always seem to get wood chips in my socks.

Other Thoughts:

I'm a newer player and have only played at a few courses so take my review with a grain of salt. There is a place to fish near hole 9. It is pretty busy on the weekends, I would go before 1pm or maybe even earlier. There are always joggers and bikers on a paved path that weaves though the course, which may provide entertainment for family members if need be.

The Epitome of a Wooded Challenge 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 17, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

With 27 well-designed holes, Tyler has a lot to offer. As the most technically challenging course I've ever seen, forget who you're playing with...this course pits you against yourself.

Despite having a few holes where you can bomb a disc, this course is almost entirely wooded. Despite this fact, there is still a wide variety of holes that test all of your skills.

Multiple concrete tees and pin positions (constituting a wide variance in distances) essentially changes the entire character of the course whenever the baskets are moved.

Handcrafted signs do a decent job getting you around the course without too much wandering or confusion. The baskets at the course are in great shape. Benches are a great touch for the weary discer, as are the bag hangers at each tee.

Cons:

For the most part, the cons of this course are also the pros.

While fun, the technically challenging woods is draining and can be soul-crushing, given enough bad kicks. Being able to launch a disc now and then would be helpful for shaking things up, as opposed to the constant wooded tunnels.

Other Thoughts:

I look at Tyler State Park the same way that I look at beer: When you're new to it and inexperienced, you take whatever is easy and may not be able to appreciate its true character. As you get more accustomed to it, you start to dabble with some more intricate options and begin to comprehend the different nuances more. Once you've been at it for a while, you can truly appreciate the amazing attributes and complexities. It's going to be a nightmare for noobs (like it was for me the first time I played), a good course to test your chops on when you get some experience, and a really fun course to weave through when you've got a good grip on your technique.

Play this course if you get the opportunity and you'll have played one of the top courses in the world.

Outstanding Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 29, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Primarily wooded course that is very impressive in every way, from the well marked signs, to the neatly groomed playing area to the multiple basket placements at each hole. Some pin positions find the baskets placed precariously on the edge of slopes where mistakes can be costly. Benches/logs to rest and poles to hang your bag at each hole. Dials at the base of each tee sign telling you which pin placement is being used is a great touch. Great use of natural barriers, railroad ties, elevated pins and good variety over 27 holes make this a challenging and unique course. Clear pathways and a wooden bridge over the water between holes 9 & 10 make the walk enjoyable. A few open holes mixed in for variety. Navigation easy, good cement tee pads and well-designed with challenges for every level.

Cons:

Tough on the the beginner. Baskets at some holes difficult to see from the tee pad. Not much bad to say- can't imagine people being unhappy with this course. First rate in every way. Pedestrians, cyclists, dog walkers and others can periodically disrupt play.

Other Thoughts:

Introduced to the course by BCDGA President Big Dog Sweeton and Sunday League coordinator Rex Hay- both great guys who were helpful in acclimating me to the holes and disc golf in general. Both have taken a lot of pride in making Tyler a top notch attraction. Wonderful local club here who are always looking to make improvements and work tirelessly to maintain the course. On par with the best courses on the upper east coast. If you can stand your ego being bruised, Tyler will help your game in the long run. If you can play well here you can play well most anywhere.

Pros:

When everything is in C position, this is one of the greatest/hardest courses I have played.

Cons:

When everything is in A for the beginners, you'll wish you went somewhere else. I second the vote for multiple baskets instead of the occasional movement of single baskets.

Other Thoughts:

I know it's a lame review--it's not really a review at all--I just wanted to rate my local course. Read the other reviews if you want specifics.

Tyler is Awesome 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 10, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

1) Concrete tee pads, some time multiple pads.
2) A-B-C pin placements.
3) if the many trees are enough of an obstacle, stacked wood piles in the fairway add to the challenge.
4) left and right legs.
5) mulitple lines to choose from.
6) excellent signage, from the time you enter the park until you leave.
7) 27 holes although we only played 18.
8) Proximity to route 95 (less than 10 minutes away).
9) We ran into 2 guys from allentown, about 40 miles away, who came to play here. this is a testimonial to how good it is.

Cons:

1) a bit crowded (I live in upstate NY so I am not used to highly used courses)
2) not close enough to my house.

Other Thoughts:

I will definitely play this course whenever I am in the Philly area. A must play course.

Pure Pleaseure to play! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 27, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

WOW! where do I start. I played at 8:15am after a big rain storm the night before. You would hardly know the course had been rained on for several hours the day and night before. Drainage here is wonderful and I had no problem with slipping and sliding.

Each basket is laid out well with signage that is nice to see and very functional. At the base of each sign was a dial that told you which basket to use since there is at least 3 on each (except 4 where it tells you which tee to use). Several of the baskets have both a long and short tee. The signage was always on the long one. Also the signs for directions to the next tee are very easy to follow and accurate.

The baskets play well and the areas around them are maintained so that putting is not a chore. The tee pads look to be in a state of being updated because some were small (tee 1) and others were very nice and large which shows these people care. This was very early spring and as yet the undergrowth was not an issue. It does look like maybe it could be later but only sparingly and most of those places are marked as mandos or OB. There use of logs as benches was a nice touch. Each tee had a 4x4 to hang a bag from.

There is plenty of elevation change here that will challenge your ability but nothing as drastic as Campgaw Reservation.

In the first 16 it is in the woods and there are some long ones in there. Once you break out onto 17 you get to start really airing some out.
So there is a nice mix of technical holes and grip and rip if you play all 27. One of the things I noticed is the nice variety of left to right and right to left throws. Some of them even give you the choice to go either way. This is a very nice feature here.

There are 2 baskets I will never forget. Nine was awesome to me because of the accuracy needed to avoid a very long hike down a hill that is all down the left of the fairway and about 30 feet behind the basket. If it does get away there are steps built into the side to go down and retrieve your disc. They also take you to the tee at 10. The other was 12 long. You will test everything you have one this one. Both a technical and a grip and rip. Choose your poison here and hope for the best.

This is a state park and there are water fountains in several areas. However they were turned off because of the time of the year. There are bathroom facilities on 2 places but both were closed for the season and the only bathroom was at the boathouse.

Because this is a state park, and as always PA does a nice job, this is a very well maintained place to play.

Parking here looks to be plentiful.

Cons:

Not to many to speak of. There is no sign, when entering the park, to direct you to the proper parking lot to start. But if you take the map and follow it you will be fine. Five, 6, 7, 8, 9, 13, and 15 are near roads and you will need to pay attention. Only 8 was real bothersome though. It is a hard right to left that follows the road. If you throw it too straight one of the many joggers/walkers I saw cold get hit. The only other thing is if you only play the first 18 there is no sign to direct you back to the parking lot.

Other Thoughts:

This is a course for everyone. It will challenge the best and because of the signage and condition of the course even a novice will have a good time. I cannot wait to play here again.

getting better each time 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 29, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

I have played Tyler at least once a year since it opened about 10 years ago and it just simply gets better each time here.

The work and maintenance done on each and every wooded hole is tremendous! 23 of the 27 holes are in the woods yet have true 'fair'ways. Great use of elevation changes. Very well marked course, the next tee signs, the dial indicating the pin position, and orange number plates on each basket all help you navigate the course easily. Large cement tees and more wood chips than any other course that I've seen. Some elevated baskets add to the challenge of the course.

The new wall and puting green on hole 5 is a great improvement.

Cons:

There are some long walks in between some holes but it is well marked. Print a map for the 1st time through, it will help with these long walks.

Other park activity such as joggers and dog walkers on the paved trails can
interfere with your game or the course.

Other Thoughts:

Close to I-95 and other commerce if needed. The Bucks County DG group needs to be commended for their work on this course, it rocks!

What an Experience! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 23, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Every tee is concrete and kept clean. Each hole offers it own version of a challenge whether it be tight trees or length. Plenty of signs showing where the next tee is. Each tee has the hole mapped out and even a "dial" that has the pin location listed (A, B, C). Course is kept very clean, even in the colder months. 27 holes, and none are really the same. A good test of ability for all level of players.

Cons:

If you're a very skilled player a couple of the pins may seem too easy for you.

Other Thoughts:

I've never played a course that is this well taken care of. It honestly seemed like a crew of people goes out every morning and prepares the course. All the signs are very nicely done. The fact that its in a State Park really gives it that quiet private feel to it. First course 18 hole course i've played where I was never searching for the next hole.

The "True" Tyler Rating 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 1, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Multiple pin placements, T-pads on some. Basically this course isn't a one show pony. The "A" pins are meant for recreational/ newbie/ junior players, but the B & C pins or any combination make this a true Pro course. Tight, wooded, & long as ever want. If you really want to challenge your skills then come for a top tournament here. Tyler brings in so many recreational, & "just for fun players" that it can't afford to always be in the pro pin positions or mostly.

Cons:

There are a few holes that even if you get a pristine drive for the longer pin positions there seems to be no set route to follow.

Other Thoughts:

This is my home course, & I can sympathize with those who come for a casual round about the easy pin positions, but what people have to remember is Tyler brings in a TON of recreational & "just for fun players". If your making a one day trip then you will most likely find tyler in shorter, why waste my time positions. If the course was always in the hard pins no one would want to play(other then disc golf fanatics, in which case nobody new will come into the game). Honestly, with how tight most the holes are treewise, I laugh at all the players that ask for longer distances most the time. Cuz when the course is in pretty much all 220' tightly wooded holes they cant even shoot par. I'm not trying to be insulting, but before people complain cuz you can't air out your non impressive drives, at least have your short game on the pro level before you waist others times with your inaccurate reviews of the course, it sounds harsh but regadless of layout noone has dominated the Tyler tourny seen & we have some top pros in the country as regulars at our tourneys. Goodluck & Good Discin!!

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 10, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course covers a lot of ground and, as such, you get to play a lot of different types of holes. There are open holes and tight, wooded holes. The holes are mostly wooded, but not too much so. There are some really spectacular views and some really tough shots. The course is very fair. A good shot gives you a fair chance at a birdie (depending on the pin position). These wooded fairways do what I think disc golf is supposed to do: control the flight of a disc in different ways. There was always a way and I don't think I ever felt like throwing my hands up in the air because I didn't know how I was going to drive the fairway.

I loved the wooded fairways. The trees and large branches that had fallen were used to line the fairway in several holes, which made the course feel really nice.
There is a wonderful system for marking which pin placement the basket is currently in. When I was there, it did not appear to be a pattern for where the pin placements were.

The course was really well marked and I was never lost on the course.

Cons:

There seems to be a lot of luck on which course you will actually play. When I went, I ended up playing a lot of the A position baskets, which generally were easier. That disappointed me some because many of the other placements looked so neat. Also, their pin placements are drastically different - so drastic that comparing scores across several layouts is pointless. Many of the A position baskets are 3s, no doubt. The C position baskets would add several strokes to even the best disc golfer. I appreciate the variety that this gives to those people who play the course every week, but for me who will only get to play it a few times a year (if that) it is a little sad to play a 250' hole, walk the rest of the hole imagining what shots I would be taking if only the basket were placed elsewhere.

That really is my biggest critique of the course, which in the grand scheme of things is minute. Another thing that I would list as a negative: there are long walks between some of the holes (another small thing).

Other Thoughts:

I loved the final hole where the 27 pin was in the "island" of the driveway turnaround. (This was one of the few C positions I got to play.) I am of the thinking that more tee pads, fewer baskets is a better decision in the long run, and this course is a prime example of why. I hope when you go, you get to play some of the holes I didn't. Although, I am looking forward to going back and trying out some of those C positions.

Always Improving Dedicated Volunteers 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 15, 2008 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Plenty to like here. I love this course. The tee signs are the best I have ever seen with the knobs turned to the exact pin location. The woods are dense but well groomed so there is really minimal undergrowth or shule to waste your time looking for your disc in. Some of the trees are marvels in themselves. Unique artificial hazzards such as palisade walls and elevated pins and woodpiles that enhance rather than detract from the experience. decent tee pads. More than one tee pad for most holes. Big clean bathrooms. Big Clean course. I love 27 holes over 18. 18 never seems to be enough so 27 is appreciated. Some really fun elevation and good use of stream beds, sloping cliffsides, a couple of big open field shots that break up the woods a bit. Water fountains on the course. Plenty of parking and information available. This course seems to improve for the better every time I go there. Teaches you to control your drives rather than just blast away recklessly. Plenty of people playing so it is usually easy to ask advice or follow another group around if your unsure where the next hole is. Good summer course gets you out of the sun. Good winter course gets you out of the wind.

Cons:

I am sure gonna make some enemies here. I have to be honest, and this is just one man's opinion. I personally wish the course had permanent C position baskets and multiple tee pads rather than always moving the baskets. I really want to experience this course in the long positions but it seems to always be in the beginner or mixed allignment. So unlike other premier courses you show up and don't always get a chance to challenge yourself with really really amazing long distance golf. The difference is huge here too. Many holes are 200-500 ft longer depending on pin positions. I would finish a 300 foot hole and see another pin position like 200-300 feet up a ravine and think damn that looks fun. SIGH! The open field holes are nice but the grass is a real nuisance to the right of the fairway.....A tractor could take care of that in 3 minutes. Come on Park Service give the volunteers a hand... I don't mind grass that is a little higher than the fairway as a hazzard but when it is beyond waist level it is a bit obnoxious. In disc golf, the hazzard should be too your score, not your time(endless fruitless search), your health(itchy and ticky), wallet (lost discs), and good mood(lost disc that was your favorite). I never understand why people insist on hazzards being so punitive. Losing a disc can ruin your whole day if it is a disc you rely on as part of your game. Of the 27 holes I think 23 are totally wooded. Not much chance to break out your Big Texas Arm haha. Seems to be plenty of big huge deerfields here I wish they had a few permanent open holes to counter the woods a bit. (update: played course in the longs and frankly it's too much hallway golf. As in the fairways are too tight for the length of the fairways. This is not sour grapes...many players better than me feel the same way. I'm not sure what the ratio of fairway width to length is but Tyler in the Cs breaks it)

Other Thoughts:

This course has some people who really care about her. The amount of work that has gone into it is stellar. I am sure one day they will purchase or collect some extra used baskets and there will be permanent long positions. I will come back and raise my score then. Some of the holes seem rather tight for their distance. But I am putting that here and not as a con because this may be a reflection of my playing ability and did not affect my rating. I guess all my bitching about high grass is always remedied by the fact that I usually find a lost disc when I lose my own. I would suggest anyone in the area to come play Tyler it is worthwhile and it is not far from I 95 in Pennsylvania or the PA Turnpike. A must play for beginners and experts alike.

Grounds Keeper @ Tyler 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 23, 2008 Played the course:never

Pros:

Being the Grounds Keeper for this course ...I'm a bit bias. But I am confident that this course will be one of the cleanest DG courses you'll ever play. With high hardwood canopy, this course is for the most part shady and comfortable on hot sunny days. Tee signs on every hole indicate all three pin positions, distance, par to C pin, and direction of next tee. Also, on the tee marker post, a dial indicates what position the pin is in. Next Tee signs positioned on every fairway. Water fountains are between holes 6&7, 15&16, and along fairway of 20. Garbage cans on #5, 12, 14, 19, 20, 22, & 27. Practice basket available at parking lot. Map and tournament info on bulletin board also at parking lot (Website has scorecard and map). Benches at holes #1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 11, 13, 15, 16, 17, 19, 20, & 21. Multiple pins make this a wonderful course for every type of player. When front 18 are in the C position the Par is 70 (WCP=68). One of the best courses I've ever played. Outstanding local club works hard at maintaining the course and has excellent relationship with wonderful park staff and personnel.

Cons:

Mostly wooded course makes for a lot of clean up after a windy storm. Course could use more water fountains...so bring a water bottle on a hot day.

Other Thoughts:

Designed by Joe "The Technician" Mela. I recommend that you stay in the fairway. Winter and Summer leagues with flexible start times. Lots of women players. Great Grounds Keeper that goes by "Willie"...don't let him catch you littering...(including cig butts) its a $300 fine. This club takes "keeping the course clean" very seriously!
