Don't Go Out of Your Way, But Decent Little Local Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 2, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Solid course map at beginning of course.

- Arrows at base of every basket pointing you to next basket.

- New baskets, concrete tees (albeit short tees).

- Good beginner course, most holes in the 230-250 range with a couple closer to 280.

- Pretty wide open field, but still a bit of challenge added by good course layout using the existing trees.

- Well maintained public park, lots of parking.

- Course designers did a good job using the available space and using what obstacles they had available to them to make it interesting.

Cons:

- Tees get a pro and a con. Great condition, nice tees, but very short. Experienced players probably don't need much of a run up but inexperienced ams might appreciate it.

- Brand new courses and map but not sure they got the distances completely right. #4 felt wrong and we GPSed it out to 260' instead of the listed 230'. Weird. Only one we bothered to check, others seemed roughly correctly though maybe a touch longer than advertised.

- No signage at each tee. Not a big deal, but helps to have a picture of the course map.

- Course throws directly overtop of walking paths, though they don't seem too busy. .

- Some of the baskets are 15-30' away from disc-swallowing long grass. This feels like it's supposed to be a beginner course, but if it is, why put punishing grass so close to the basket? As a casual player, it just made me not really want to bother going for the pin on a couple of holes because I didn't want to waste time looking in the tall grass. I like this sort of placement on a championship course, not really on this course.

Other Thoughts:

- Do not make the drive from Vancouver area just to play this course, not worth the drive, you're better going into the U.S.

- That said, good little local course that's good for beginners, other than some of the long grass being annoyingly close to the baskets.

Chilliwack Rough Is WAC! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 4, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

The Walden DGC in Chilliwack, British Columbia, Canada is located in a very pretty little park. This small park is flat with lovely green grass and this nasty rough with six foot high elephant grass and some patches of blackberry bushes running through the park. This rough really comes into play on holes, 1, 5 and 8. As this is a recreational level course with all nine holes lengths measuring between 230' and 278', having championship challenging rough kind of doesn't make since to me.

As the course is brand new, so is the equipment. The baskets are wonderful DGA models with red numbers. The tee pads are smallish concrete although most players won't need much of a run up when the longest hole is 278'. There are no tee signs but as previous reviewer Dsgc14 explained, there are nice little next tee signs at the bottom of each basket which makes navigation a breeze.

There are a few interesting/challenging holes here. # 1, although only 236', forces you to thread a low drive through a gap between a tree and some bushes. And thick, tall elephant grass lies just a few feet past the basket.

I found # 8 to be the most interesting hole here. It's 255' but features a cedar tree right in the center of the fairway. If you throw right, there's a small window and the 6' intimidating rough just to the right. The boring but safer throw to the left of the cedar is probably the smarter throw for most of us rec types.

Cons:

The tall grass, blackberries and wetland area come into play are going to affect most players frequenting this course. On # 1, this rough is probably 20' left of the basket but I managed to hyser my bright orange disc into these weeds never to be seen again. I really didn't care for # 5. It's a tight (236') throw down a fairly narrow fairway with this ugly rough all the way down on your right side. Many players will see their discs sail off into this black hole. And I already mentioned # 8.

Recreational distances and challenges.

Other Thoughts:

Without the nasty rough, I would have liked this course a lot more. Because of it, I'm not really a fan. I probably couldn't afford the lost disc tax if I played here on a regular basis.

Because Dscg14 is comfortable with kilometers and I am American and thereby well versed in miles, our ratings will vary somewhat. He gave this course a 3.5 but for me, after converting kilometers to miles, and then dividing by the sum total of the discs I lost, I will award it a slightly below average score of 2.0.

Happy disc hunting to you all!

Nice entry-level community course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 10, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The course is an attractive course in a well maintained park. The course is new so tee pads and baskets are in good condition. While there are no individual hole signs, each pin placement has an arrow pointing to the next hole and course navigation is fairly easy. There is a map at the entry to the park to give you an overview.

The fairways are generally open with some tall grasses and water hazards that can be problematic if you go off track (I lost one disc today, but deserved it as the throw was quite errant). There is lots of room here and in our second round we made up alternate tee pads that added challenge.

Cons:

The tee pads are not regulation size and many people may find them too small. That said, if you're playing the recreational course, you shouldn't need much more than a step or two in your run up--the course is quite short (all holes under 300 feet).

Other Thoughts:

This is a nice little starter course for players in Chilliwack. There is space on almost every hole for extended tee pads or pin placements as the player base grows, but it will be a good course to learn on. I wouldn't call is a destination course, but it's only 5 minutes off the highway, so easy to swing by for a quick round.
