A One Week Wonder !! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 7, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

A former cattle farm was rented for a temporary course for the Lion or Lamb Invitational. Due to COVID restrictions, the Burlington area courses were unavailable, this course had plenty of social distancing.
Short and Long tees on every hole (Lamb or Lion), they were marked with landscaping flags and mowed down to a low level.
Hole maps, with distance and Par at each Lion tee. Normally the hole layout was not needed, as you could see the basket from the tee.
20 hole layout, with loops of 8, 3 and 9, all circling back to Tournament Central.
Pretty good mix of holes, 6 going left, 9 straight or split fairway and 5 going right.
Mostly wide open holes, but a few partially wooded and two water carries for variety.

Cons:

Most holes were bordered by thick woods and briars, or tall, thick 2 foot high grass. The fairways were pretty wide, but if you missed them, you would be searching for a while.
The tees on the two water carry holes were a little short and uneven, but they were short holes, so not a big deal.
Variety of portable baskets, you were never sure what was coming next. They did seem to catch pretty well.

Other Thoughts:

Within the length of just a few weeks, Ace Run Disc Golf Shop took over this tournament from another shop, found the property, laid out a 20 hole course, mowed and had it set up for a one week life.
Most of the holes followed the perimeter of the property, so they had the thick trees on the that side and the high grass to the center of the property. It did provide quite a challenge looking for discs in the high grass. TD Bradley Dixon had a 3 minute search rule for the tournament and asked that any found discs be returned to TC, which was a great idea. I had to leave one on #6, but found it again after my round. I guess it was good Karma after all the discs I found for my cardmates!
The majority of the holes were straight ahead, keep it in the short grass layouts. But the better holes were the ones requiring shot shaping:
#4 - a gradual downhiller, with the woods on the left, and some interesting dead trees and small trees in front of the basket. This provided a hidden basket in a clearing just about the size of Circle 1.
#6 - a long 685 ft Par 4 (Lion), flat tee shot to a Mando left turn, then downhill and right into the treeline to the guarded basket.
#12 - another long downhiller, 650 ft Par 4, the tees are on the right edge of the fairway, so you have to play this one left to right.
#16 - on of the few wooded holes, an unusual 3 trunk tree in the middle, with gaps left and right around it, then the basket near a large guardian tree.
Probably the toughest hole on the course was #17, Par 4 680 ft, the Lion tee is at the property edge at the bottom of a steep hill, about 360 ft up that hill until it levels off at the Lamb tee. Then the fairway follows a farm road gap through a treeline, then downhill and another 150 ft to the basket.
Its real tough to rate a course like this, natural surface tee, portable baskets, rough that hides everything thrown there, normally do not lead to a favorable rating. But, the uniqueness of the layout, the variety of holes and great chance to watch your disc fly across the open terrain all seemed to cancel those out. I checked after I finished the 20 hole layout and walked about 4.5 miles, definitely some of that in searching for wayward drives. It was a workout, especially in 90 degree temps. It felt better than a Good course, but couldn't go much higher considering the rough conditions.
Kudos to Bradley and ARDGS for putting this together and his superior hospitality when I was there on the course bagging, errr practice day.
