Pros:
Currently 9 holes with boxed gravel tee pads and tee signs on the shorts. There were brand new longer/harder tee pads being installed when I played. The course plays through existing mostly open areas of the park and has some nice mountain elevation and views, and a good variety of left, right, and straight shots. Easy to navigate the course and course map in parking lot.
Favorite holes are hole 1 from the new/long tee pad, hole 2, and 7, and of course hole 8. Hole 8 is the signature hole with the beautiful view of the mountains on the far away horizon and the basket downhill some 80' of elevation and a pond behind it.
Cons:
Some safety issues... from the short tee on hole 1 some shots will hit the tee pad of hole 2 - I did, luckily nobody was there. The long tee on hole 1 is safer from hole 2, but the basket for 9 is in the fairway. The fairways of hole 4 and 5 kind of overlap too close mostly from the old/short tees, the newer tees play much safer from each other. Hole 8 plays over across the fairway of hole 7, but I don't see this as much of an issue because of the elevation differences.
Other Thoughts:
Overall Walnut Mountain a nice quick play and hopefully will continue to improve and expand. It has some serious potential if it expands to 18 holes and plays through the woods behind hole 7. It would also be nice to move hole 9 somewhere else for safety and move the short tee for hole 1 as well for safety from hole 2's tee pads. If the course does make some of those improvements I could see it being a 4 rated course or higher.
