Gem in a tarnished setting 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 20, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice layout.
Challenging lines/distances.
Multiple tees.
Heavy Duty, if aged baskets (are those old Arachnids?)

Cons:

Lack of care (especially mowing)
Challenging lines/distances
Peat bog on #8

Other Thoughts:

With a bit of care, this could easily be one of the nicest 9-hole courses around. The lines are tight, but playable. The distances were a real challenge for my lack of armspeed (play it safe and probably get a 4, or really lean into it and possibly end up in the very rough rough and get a 4 or 5?)
Loved the course, but it needs more love than it's getting.

Better than I expected 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 16, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course is well marked and easy to navigate. It has some nice views of the Catskills. There are 9 baskets with two tees for each basket -- a yellow and a green. There is a beautiful downhill 400 foot hole that drops about 75 feet and turns left about 100 feet. A nice hyzer that follows the line of the downhill can reach the basket for a 2.

Cons:

The tees are are all dirt and gravel -- no concrete. The signs on the tees are not all up -- and some are damaged. The course has nice left/right and elevation options, but for a 9-hole course it is on the long side, with most of the holes over 300 feet.

Other Thoughts:

It is one of the better 9 hole courses as far as challenge and distance go.

Walnut Potential 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 30, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Currently 9 holes with boxed gravel tee pads and tee signs on the shorts. There were brand new longer/harder tee pads being installed when I played. The course plays through existing mostly open areas of the park and has some nice mountain elevation and views, and a good variety of left, right, and straight shots. Easy to navigate the course and course map in parking lot.

Favorite holes are hole 1 from the new/long tee pad, hole 2, and 7, and of course hole 8. Hole 8 is the signature hole with the beautiful view of the mountains on the far away horizon and the basket downhill some 80' of elevation and a pond behind it.

Cons:

Some safety issues... from the short tee on hole 1 some shots will hit the tee pad of hole 2 - I did, luckily nobody was there. The long tee on hole 1 is safer from hole 2, but the basket for 9 is in the fairway. The fairways of hole 4 and 5 kind of overlap too close mostly from the old/short tees, the newer tees play much safer from each other. Hole 8 plays over across the fairway of hole 7, but I don't see this as much of an issue because of the elevation differences.

Other Thoughts:

Overall Walnut Mountain a nice quick play and hopefully will continue to improve and expand. It has some serious potential if it expands to 18 holes and plays through the woods behind hole 7. It would also be nice to move hole 9 somewhere else for safety and move the short tee for hole 1 as well for safety from hole 2's tee pads. If the course does make some of those improvements I could see it being a 4 rated course or higher.

Great Course! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 17, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Amazing views and a very well balanced from right to left throws.

Cons:

The chains on the basket seem to be too heavy and coated. They are not forgiving and do not absorb like others.

Other Thoughts:

You can see the alternate tee pads are in the works! Keep up the great work.
