Beautiful Views, Average Golf

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 10, 2023 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

+Really cool scenery to have a disc golf course. The drive into this State Rec Area is beautiful with big rolling hills and excellent views of the lake and the cliffs/bluffs on both sides. This rec area has a marina, little store, food truck (maybe just open weekends in the summer), cabins and other campsites, beach, etc.
+Baskets are all there and in good shape.
+Concrete tees are all in good shape. Grippy and long enough.
+Signage is pretty basic with hole number, distance, and par. No map but it's not really needed. The course is laid out well for navigation purposes. There were mowed paths through the taller grass to aid in finding the next tee or showing the path to the basket. There is a nice, full color course map between the parking lot and hole 1.
+Some of the holes are really visually cool and also play well. Holes 7 and 9 came to mind as the signature holes on the course.
+Good variety of distances here. Nothing too short or crazy long but definitely some variety. I think between 70 and 130 yards (that's what the signs said).
+Bathrooms and picnic tables near hole 1.

Cons:

-Pancake flat.
-Open holes are pretty repetitive and unfortunately, they outnumber the wooded ones 6-3. A few of those open holes have at least a tree or two to work around but at least 3 have no obstacles at all.
-Signs could have a little more info on them.
-$12 per vehicle for out of staters is pretty steep. I think this would be a cool place to rent a campsite or cabin and stay for a few days but as a day trip, it's not as good.
-Hole 9 has a branch that hangs too low right in front of the tee. It needs a good trimming.
-All holes are lined by thick, tall grass. Can make finding discs challenging.

Other Thoughts:

+One of those courses where the good holes were really good and the bad holes were really bad. Would have been nice if they carved some holes into the woods closer to the lake. I'm sure that they wanted to minimize tree cutting so I can see why they did it this way.
+Not worth $12 just to play disc golf. At least have a picnic and spend some time at the beach.
+Right across the Lake/River from Yankton SD and it's 4 courses. Gavin's Point is the best of them.
