Palm Beach's Finest

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 25, 2023 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

18 hole course with multiple tees on every hole. Course starts out in the woods for the first 8 holes offering very tight tunnel shots, forehand and backhand holes, and a couple of nice par fours that will require two precise shots to card your birdie. Holes 9-15 are fairly open, a couple of additional par fours mixed in with some shorter par threes, with OB and water lurking on many of the holes. Finally, the over the lake shot awaits on hole 16, setting you up for a tight par four and a fun finishing hole with an elevated basket. Ten meter circle marked on every hole, and two basket positions on nearly every wooded hole allow for a great variety of disc golf to be had. Tee signs are new and really nice. Concrete tees have been poured on every hole.

Cons:

The open field holes constantly get chewed up by off road ATV's, which can cause a run-up or stance issue should your drive end up there. Mosquitos will be a problem more often than not. Course drains poorly in a couple of areas. Be careful with the cypress stumps on 7 and 8. 9A will often be unplayable as many park there to fish in the lake nearby. No restrooms or water (there are porta-johns not far from 11's long pad).

Other Thoughts:

Honestly, I've played nearly everything else south Florida has to offer. If you could only play one course in your time here, Delray has to be it. The variety of holes, the par fours with specific landing zones, and everything else combines to separate Delray from the other good courses Palm Beach County has to offer.

Falling into place drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 6, 2023 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Great woods layout, 2 sets of concrete tees added in last 8 months, 6 par 4's, low disc loss chances/

Cons:

Lack of tee signs, buggy at times, no rest rooms or drinking water, lack of garbage cans.

Other Thoughts:

The local club has done a great job on this course. Great tees, clean lines through woods, new par 4's are now very playable which they were not the last time I reviewed. 11 holes play through the woods, 7 are more in the open and allow full throws. The course can be a little buggy after rains, and after particularly hard rain can flood at places, but don't let that dissuade you. It is now among the best courses in South Florida, but once a couple more holes are redesigned in the coming year, it won't have many equals. If you are in the area make sure you fit this into your plans. Pack water and bug spray.

Rustic And Somewhat Unfinished 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 22, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

New layout in a mostly dedicated area of the large multi-use park. The course is scenic featuring tight techy wooded holes long more open type holes and some fair water hazards holes. The course generally has one tee per hole and 2 baskets. The laminated tee signs are adequate for the most part. There are next tee arrows now to aid with the navigation. The course is very rustic, at first with a wealth of wildlife and plenty of fish in the clean lakes. The course has a great vibe and very friendly locals eager to show off their course and give navigation tips, like playing hole 9a and 9b at the same time and calling them 9 and 10 instead.

Cons:

The tees here run the gambit between rustic natural, Durarock, and asphalt. Hopefully, they will be all concrete someday. Also, better tee signs with updated hole info would be nice.

Other Thoughts:

So what we have here is a gorgeous park at the edge of civilization that will probably be getting higher reviews in the future and if all of the nags are worked out could become one of the nicest courses in the area. Even with the new navigation aids, I would caution first-timers to play with a local the first time around.

And yeah: BRING BUG SPRAY if planning on playing it March thru November.

As I Was Driving Through West DeRay Park And Glimpsed The Multitudes Of Different Baskets Types, I Knew That I Was In Trouble! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 30, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

When I finally reached the actual course and saw the four practice baskets kind of haphazardly spaced, once again I sensed trouble. And as I started playing the course and saw the laminated tee signs, once again I sensed navigational difficulties. The course just has this vibe of rustic-ness or maybe having been built on a tight budget.

The park itself is kind of a wonderland with all these different activities going on. There were guys taking off and landing in their ultralight aircraft. There was a field area for RC cars. Closer to the actual start of the course, there was a airport for RC small airplanes and it was filled with flyers. And a little farther on by the lake was a place for driving your RC boats on the water. I found all these activities too damn interesting to ignore and could have spent a lot of time just enjoying watching all of them.

I think this course probably should have two different rating categories, one for players playing it with a local guide and another for us poor saps attempting to play it solo for the first time. Unfortunately, I fell into the poor sap category so my experience was not so pleasant. The on-line map is not up to date so navigation here is mostly crazy with all these alternate baskets. Often time, I wasn't sure which way or to which basket I was playing too.

The first 7 or 8 holes are tight and technical. Although, semi-confusing to follow, I liked them. The open middle stretch of the course (9-12) was where I decided I was checked out. # 9 was actually a pretty setting for the basket placement. As I was trying to find my way, I discovered some little pink markers for tees, old white trashed baskets and sometimes, I never located the baskets. After several long walks ahead trying to locate the next basket, I was done and just ready to be finished here and go watch the RC pilots do their thing. # 18 featured a very cool basket placement up this small hill.

Cons:

I'm mighty impressed that the laminated signs have held up, they usually get quickly torn down.

Inconsistent tee pads.

The course is just kind of dingy. It needs to have the junk hauled away.

Get rid of the white alternate baskets. They're rusty and are eyesores.

Around # 7 is an old discarded basket in the bushes. Gees, get it out of here. Let someone take it home and use it for their practice basket.

Other Thoughts:

I'm sure if I had had a local guide, my experience here would have been much better. Recent reviews have been more impressive than earlier ones. The Palm Beach DGC seems to be an active organization. Even with the navigational and funding issues you must be facing here, the bones are here for a above average course. It's not a 4.0 course but I also don't believe it's a 1.79 rated one either. It's currently kinda average but with some potential to be better. That potential just hasn't quite been tapped into yet.

Much better than expected 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 9, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice variety, including short and tight woods holes, longer woods holes with challenging lines, and a few open bomber holes with OB and water constraints. Hit your lines in the woods and you will be loving life; get a bad kick off an early tree and you may be scrambling for bogey or worse.

Wind can be a big factor on the open holes, especially where OB is tight (note: most of my drivers are in the 150s). Even on some of the woods holes tricky winds that you don't feel on the tee can affect shots down the fairway. Reading the wind was essential when I played, but I see this as a pro (added challenge) rather than a con.

Alternate baskets and tees have been installed on many holes. Water and OB near the basket frequently add danger to approaches. Fairways were cleaned out nicely of brush and trash when I played.

I enjoyed my round much more than expected. From what I hear the locals have done quite a bit of work on the course recently, and it shows.

Cons:

Course map and tee signs need updating. When I played we either scouted ahead to see where the basket was, or played to the first visible basket.

Several baskets are situated near park roads, and parked cars can interfere with playing these holes. We were unable to play one hole because of a car parked by the basket, and had to play modified versions of two or three other holes to avoid parked cars or non-disc golf activities on the fairway.

If you get off the often narrow fairways the rough can be pretty rough in places. Reasonably high chance of disc loss.

Natural tee pads were decent, but better tee pads would improve the course. The course is mostly flat, but so is most of Florida.

Other Thoughts:

Normally I play a course multiple times before reviewing, but I decided to review this course after one play because the quality of the course seems much higher than the current rating. Clearly the locals have done a lot of work. The course has the feel of a work in progress - in a good way - so I will be interested to play here again to see if the course continues to improve.

I did not experience any problems with insects, snakes, or gators but I played in March. Can't speak to what it is like to play here in summer.

I had a local guide, but for the most part navigation was fairly intuitive either by following the trail or by using the red arrows that point the way to the next tee.

To reach the parking lot for the course, drive way back and right into the park, past the RC car course and near the archery range.

New and Improved 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 25, 2019 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

All pro's and con's listed here are also being worked on:
-Excellent combination of tight wooded holes and open fairways
-Very well marked (Red arrows mark next TEE position, not Mandos)
-Fairways on wooded holes are being cleared out of any remaining brush leaving a clean fairways on the early wooded holes.
-Multiple baskets in play, not one basket moved to different positions per round)
-Multiple color coded pin positions (long - green / short - yellow) on most holes
-Most holes have signs with correct pin placements and distances. Signs are being added with the progress of the course
-Currently installing cementboard teepads, and the holes that don't have an installed teepad, have the tee location marked and cleared out

Cons:

-The signs for the holes still have the locations of the previous layout. Be sure to follow the red arrows to the next tee
-The park lies agains the Everglades which presents the potential danger of alligators and snakes. (We've been warned several times about the alligators in the water, but have yet to see one)

Other Thoughts:

At the time of writing this, the course has been completely overhauled by the Palm Beach Disc Golf group and is a work in progress.
I've avoided this course given its rough reviews about overgrowth, unkemptness, and wildlife until the other day at a different course, a player asked if I'd played there. After he'd explained it's upgraded condition, I decided to give it a shot and was VERY happy with the results and progress so far. Looking forward to seeing it develop.

Updated Review - Love the Improved Course! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 1, 2020 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Updated my review from a few years ago.

+ Some long, challenging holes for AM/PRO players.
+ Most of the baskets have signage and markers pointing to the next tee (or at least the general area)
+ Great mix of wooded and open holes.
+ Par 3s and 4s to share
+ Much cleaner layout, with some beautiful scenic holes (holes 9 and 10 come to mind)
+ Concrete sheets were at most holes, some of which included a broom for sweeping excess dirt/debris off.

Cons:

- Hard to find the starting area (parking and hole 1) once you enter the park. The former red basket course you first encounter can confuse some new players who are not using UDisc or this website.
- The tee pad (part of the main road) at hole 12 seems dangerous. While car traffic is courteous and aware, I think this is a bad tee pad placement.
- While the signage helps with the hole layouts, I don't recall seeing any par indicators (3 or 4) on them. I had to use UDisc for that information (a minor gripe, but could be helpful for new players).

Other Thoughts:

Since my first visit in 2017, this course has had a LOT of improvements made. Thank you to the local DGC and all those responsible for this turnaround. Adding some kind of "Disc Golf" signage at the park entrance would be a great addition. I think the course can still use some additional tweaks (tee pad placements, signage updates, trash cans in certain areas, etc.), but I'm excited to share this location with other local players... and for good reasons this time!

Not so sure 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 4, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Real easy to get to in South Florida. Very scenic course.

Cons:

Really difficult for a first time visitor to follow the course and find tees and baskets. Hopefully they will improve that. I got attacked by chiggers/red bugs around hole 3 and 4 when my friend threw her disc into the thicket, be careful bc they can ruin your day.

Other Thoughts:

We played the course out of order so by the time we got to hole 3 and 4 we'd already played 7 or 8 holes. The chigger attack of twenty fifteen caused us to pack up early so hopefully we can revisit soon.

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 19, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Privately funded course by the Palm Beach DG club. Eventually there will be tee pads and signage but for now only baskets and cement markers . Very challenging course with lots of o.b. and a variety of shots.

Cons:

Very hot and buggy (bring spray) download the map in the links/files section as you will need it. This will be a great course but its gonna take some time . Keep your pets on a leash.

DO NOT PLAY THIS COURSE (but please keep it open!) 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 5, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Quiet. PLEASE PLEASE keep it that way, it's so pleasant if you're not adverse to searching through insect and spider ridden woods. Not to mention gators - DON'T go after your waterlogged discs.

Cons:

Unkempt, soooo unkempt. And other folks who frequent this park for other purposes other than DG don't have any respect for the sport (in my own experience). Also, an incomprehensible amount of garbage around the course. Alone, my fiancee and I have been attempting to clean up a bit, but it doesn't even make a dent in what's out there. So generally, we just deal with it. Pack it in pack it out, people

Other Thoughts:

I'm really reeeeeally hesitant to post this... but this course is pretty great. My fiancee and I love playing this course and have come out on many many occasions to toss discs or play a full or partial round. Yes, it is unkempt. We've even toyed with the idea of coming out with machetes from walmart to clean some of it up a bit. And forget about 1, 2 & 3's green if it's rained in the past few days (most likely, since it's S FL). But this is NOT a bad course. The attached Google Maps image of it here on dgcoursereview doesn't quite allow for easy navigation of the course, but if it was cleaned up a bit, more people would play it like we do, 4+ times a week, though I'm definitely NOT recommending it, since we tend to like our solitude ;)

Though if anyone would like a tour or to play a round (much to my fiancee's chagrin), shoot me a line, I'm always up to huck some plastic

Second time out 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 5, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Speaking as someone new to the sport,
This is a tough course. Very challenging par 62.

Cons:

course is a work in progress. Course description is on the links file, but when on the course some of the tee boxes/holes are not easy to find.

Other Thoughts:

Course starts out very tough on first two holes, going through trees and tunnels. Holes 3-9; 15-17 are more in the open. 10-14 are through disc eating trees that require a lot of skill.
