Can I buy a vowel at WMCPDGC?

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 21, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ DisCatchers are still looking new and catching well; tee pads are concrete and decently-sized; tee signs are basic but highly visible coroplast signs w/ # and distance(s) listed. There are smaller, nicer looking wooden Hole # signs as well but they're harder to see from far away. There is a map available on Another Site, but none on-site.

+ Benches, trash, practice basket and POJ's all near Tee #1, with some additional benches and trash available; ample parking (the day I played, not sure how it is when other park activities are happening)

+ Plays a loop; there is some rough present of varying levels. On some holes an errant shot might be found in lightly thorny areas, others might need a little more effort. #10 in particular I remember having some thick rough near the drainage pipe. I've definitely seen WAY worse. Course navigation, while not necessarily intuitive, is relatively easy (short course) with only a couple places that might trip you up w/o a map (Tee 11 is a small backtrack from Basket 10, and Tee 14 is likewise a bit backwards from Basket 13. Also, there are still plenty of roots around that might literally trip you up as well.

+ Much of the course is on the flatter side but the elevation that's available is being used. For a short, wooded, technical course I found that I used a fair few different discs and shots. And while it's a shorter course, there is a range of distances that's satisfactory (to me).

+ The locals I met were all super helpful and seemed to be enjoying the course very much. There does seem to be an active community here, though I'm not sure how much MADGA is involved or whether or not there are proper leagues.

Cons:

- Much of the course plays in what could be considered a rather tight area of the park. I'm not sure I'd necessarily call the place cramped, and none of the fairways technically cross, but I'd wager beginners here end up w/ discs in other fairways often. It's a tight loop.In fact I got a little nervous a couple times that I might be on the receiving end of a shot coming back in my direction.

- The rough present does contain some thorny fun, and while I didn't run into any, I thought I saw some poison ivy in places.

- Variety in tight/technical vs open/bombers isn't really present. You may only really stretch your arm on 18. I think this course is meant to be that classic tight/wooded/technical subspecies though.

- I can see how the course might get a tad crowded some days. I played on a Thursday at around 3:30 and there were several other people tossing. Not sure how the short nature of the course might contribute to bottlenecks.

Other Thoughts:

Unfinished Business brought me back to Mobile for the first time in 5 years. As it turned out the buddy I crashed with now lives a whole mile and a half from WMCPDGC, so I just had to get a look. What I found was like a brand new 20 year old course - 18 holes of mostly tight, wooded, short golf. No long bombers here so leave the distance drivers in the car. Anyone familiar with the area courses will find it in-line with the likes of Cottage Hill and Chickasabogue. It's a fun, quick play that will definitely provide a challenge for people looking to shape shots and work on disc selection, as well as reign in distance control. Your main problem here will be trees, which are abundant but not overly so. Experienced players will have plenty of birdie/ace runs. I can see how beginners might get frustrated by the trees. It's evident that some TLC has been put into the place and the locals I met seem to care for it a great deal.

I'm erring on 2.0 (Reasonable) because, for what it is, it's a fun little course with all the basic amenities. I'd probably go w/ 2.25 if given the option because I feel that - again, for what it is - a 2.5 (Decent/Typical) is just a liiiiittle high. Just one or two more open or longer shots would help, but that's just my opinion. I wouldn't necessarily go too far out of my way to play it, but if you're in the area it's definitely worth a stop, especially for a quick bag - I played it in no more than an hour.

Nice thought drive by

Pros:

Had good intent and ideas for a drainage ditch.

Cons:

A few are a ditch flood area. It's not grass it's under brush and thorns. Losing a disc in the knee high Flora is almost guaranteed

Other Thoughts:

Could be OK if well taken care of but would be very difficult as the terrain is not really mowable.
