A gem at the end of a course bagging day.

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 13, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

1. Excellent signage, very visible baskets, and new concrete tee pads.
2. Great lines for shot shaping throughout the course.
3. Multiple pin placements.
4. New bathroom at hole 1. (Did not use it. Not sure if it had A/C or not).
5. Good elevation throughout the course, but not overly demanding for kids or seniors.

Cons:

1. Feels a bit squeezed in to the land available. Errant drives can cross other close fairways on holes 2 ~3, 5 ~7, and 13 ~14. In fact, hole 7's tee pad is aimed directly at hole 6's tee pad. I parked 6's tee pad. This shouldn't be a problem if the course isn't busy, but this course is going to be very popular.
2. New course. So the rough is really rough right now.
3. A ton of broken glass on holes 10 and 11. Watch your step.
4. A few of the wooded holes feel too short.

Other Thoughts:

I wish I was fresher for this course instead of it being my 7th bag for the day. I labored through it, but could tell this is one I'd enjoy over and over again with all the shot shaping required. All skill levels can enjoy this course. If there's room to improve this course in the future, it can easily be a 4.0 or maybe even a 4.5 rating.

A good start on another good course in ET 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 8, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

New course in a new park with only one other activity, a large fenced in dog park.
New white banded DD Veteran baskets are great, they even used the ""next tee"" arrows on the bottom of the basket (I had to adjust the one on #14).
Large concrete tee pads on every hole, they are a good size, only a few are not aligned correctly, #4 I'm looking at you!
Only one tee per hole, but just about every hole has two pin positions. Most were in the long position the day I was there.
Also good tee signs on every hole, showing both pin positions. Quite a few Next Tee signs, although several were not needed (next tee was in sight) and they were missing one where it's really needed, to #15 tee.
Open holes and wooded holes, the open holes are the first 7, so if you like those, enjoy them while you can.
The grass was cut to a good height when I was there, white PVC pipes show the pin positions not being used, so you can usually spot the short ones from the tee.
Restrooms on the way from the parking lot to the first tee, very convenient.

Cons:

It looks like this property was formerly a farm, shoot, there are still cows in the next property over. The area where #10 and #11 are used to be the trash/dump area, you can still see broken glass on the fairway, they did a pretty good job of cleaning this up, but watch your step.
As I mentioned above, the open holes are all in the first seven, with wooded holes the rest of the way (#14 is only partially wooded). It would have been great if these were mixed in better, but that's what is available on the property.
The holes really tighten up and get longer as the round goes on (13-18), be sure to save something for these later holes. The upkeep on these holes are not the same as the rest of the course, the grass is longer, the rough is thicker and they just need some work.
#18 is a pretty tough, crazy angle finishing hole. The sign shows a RH Hyzer hole, through tight woods. I walked it first and it keeps going around the corner to a guarded basket position, in the long position. Once you get back to the tee, you really notice an angled tree blocking the left side of the fairway. To get around that tree and still hyzer around the fairway, through scattered trees, all the way back to the basket, is pretty tough.

Other Thoughts:

A really good addition to the great amount of courses in this part of the state. Except for the small college course nearby, there's not another course for nearly 20 miles. Surprised to also spot a Disc store in Greeneville (combo with a bike shop), but it was closed when I stopped.
Pretty cool winding through this small town, head out to the farm land, and there's the park, with Disc Golf and Dog Park listed on the park sign! The gravel is pretty rough on the road in a parking but not too bad. The course is listed as opening in 2020, I don't know if all the Pros I listed (Baskets, Tees, Signage) were in place when the course opened, but its good to see a new course opened the right way.
While the open holes were mostly open, there were a few trees on each that required shot shaping. The best of these was #5, a Par 4 at 519' when I was there, the tee shot is on a slight elevation, semi-tunnel off the tee turning right, with thick trees down the left. After that, its wide open to the wide open green, beautiful and fun hole.
After that, #8 is a shorty, downhill, very tight, then #9-#12 are all heavily wooded of varying length and direction.
Then, they get long and challenging, with various lines to hit off the tee, and thick woods most of the length of the holes. #13 and #15 had the toughest lines to hit, but they seemed fair to me, after you clear those, they do open up around the green. #16 had the most open tee shot, but the path to the long pin, is a sharp left turn, protected by a clump of trees.
Probably the best of these holes is #17, 400' and Par 4 to the long pin, generous fairway, but about 150' out, there's a clump of trees and bushes in the middle, as it turns left. Clear that, then you have another 250' to a narrowing fairway, with thick rough on both sides. It's too bad this is not the finishing hole, its a much better hole than #18.
Overall, this is a good addition to the list of East Tennessee courses, not in the caliber of the best ones, but its a good start. More upkeep on the Back 9 and varying the pin positions better, this one will get a lot of attention. Even heard from a local player that there should be another new course in Greeneville soon.

Greeneville Disc Golf 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 11, 2020 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Whirlwind Disc Golf Course is a brand new course in Greeneville, TN which is located at W.T. Daniels Park. My favorite thing about this course is that it has excellent signage and tee pads as well as two pin locations for each hole. The A Pins are the short pins and the B Pins are the long pin locations. From what I understand (from more local players) the baskets alternate between both pin locations every two weeks. This may not be exactly accurate and may change as the course seasons, but I do know the baskets are moved on occasion as I have played both layouts. I must say, both layouts are quite fun and compliment each other nicely. Both layouts offer a great selection of left to right holes and right to left holes. In addition to this, there is a good mix of long/short, open/wooded, and uphill/downhill holes. From the standpoint of the play of the course alone, this course is great.

Cons:

There are a few things I believe could be changed to make this course an even more enjoyable experience. One of my main concern is that there are a few wholes that are facing each other in opposite directions with very little to no trees separating the two. This is fine for casual play but I could see some safety issues that could come into play during an event setting. With this being said, that is nothing a few planted trees couldn't fix. Another course con for me would be the distances listed on the signs. Some of the distances are very obviously off by how the holes play. One last thing worth mentioning would be the fact that if you get off the fairways, the rough is VERY rough. I have not done this myself but I have heard stories of local players losing a disc with a shot that seemed to have been no farther than 5 feet from the fairway and getting cut up pretty badly on their legs with thorns in the rough. This feels to me like something that will of course get better as the course ages and it is apparent that they are already putting tons of work into the course even after it was opened to help this issue. In a couple years, I feel like this course will be outstanding as long as minor course maintenance keeps going into it and maybe the addition of a few signs to show you where to go for the next hole. I wouldn't call this a destination course, however I definitely will play it here and there as it is fairly close to home. If you are in the area, make sure you give this one a play at least 2 times so you can see both layouts. I know it seems like I complained quite a bit about his course but before this course was put in, the only course Greeneville had was a small 9 hole course with no tee pads, no signage, and horrible baskets, so this course is HUGE for Greeneville! Overall, I am quite excited that this course has been installed and I hope it opens the door for more disc golf in Greeneville.

A Review With Movements 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 30, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Act I: "The Specialty"

-It's brand new. The tee signs and tee pads must have been established before the course was put in. The temporary tee signs are extremely neat! Nice diagrams and have dynamic disc logos on them. The actual tee signs will come in soon. I must say it's really nice that they went the extra mile to put in those preeminent temp signs.

-Nice Dynamic Veteran baskets. Huge fan and primary thrower of DD, I love seeing their baskets. Every hole at Whirl Wind has two pin positions. Some of the long pins are pretty challenging and fun.

-There was a man at the pavilion selling discmania, and trilogy discs. Not sure if he comes here often, but my buddy gladly purchased a disc from him. Whirlwind instantly struck me as a Dynamic Discs Specialty. The signs, the baskets, and the man selling some DD plastic.

Act II: "The Cream of the Crop"

-Whirlwind's best features would be the fact that you may be able to play a slightly different layout the second time you play here if the pins are not in the same position as last time. Course has many short holes around 200'. It's a bit disjointed at times. #7's long pin is a par three that's over 400' and across an open field. The last 80' or so is through a wooded pocket. Then there's #8 that 150ish and down a small hill through a tight gap off the tee. Almost plays as a jump putt in the woods that you'd maybe have after landing in the rough on a hard hole.

-The best of this course is mostly on the front nine. #5 is probably the signature hole. It's downhill and primarily open. The drive has a line of trees to the right side and an orchard to the left, followed by a tree line. I threw a raider over the orchard and it glided nicely but ended left on the other side of a tree line. Basket was in the 525' par four position. That pin is an easier hole overall. The short pin is nearly 400' and is only a par three. So #5 is both a challenging and rewarding par three and a grip it and rip par four with a chance for big arms to reach.

-Shreddable. Pretty good for starters. Some holes here are very difficult, but if you can do reasonably well on the harder holes, you'll probably score well here. Most of the holes are pretty easy to birdie if you are very competitive in PDGA events.

Act III: "The Last of the Lantern"

-Miscellaneous. There's a vending machine near the pavilion in between the bathrooms. There's also a dog park beside #1's fairway.

-This area needed a course and now it has one. My buddy and I saw many people playing and they seemed to enjoy it. Few families with their children were playing the course. I'd call Whirlwind a "Gateway Course." It's not great, but it has some great parts to it and those parts to it will get new people invested.

-Many next tee signs, so it's easy to navigate.

Cons:

Act IV: "The Entrance"

-It's a severe pain in the ass. You better buy some pepto and bring it with you. The driveway to get here is high gravel. My car sounded like my feral cat at 3 AM while driving up that hill and it can scratch your wheels worse than the scratch of a feral cat. It's not too bad when you pull in, but when you depart you have to drive up it and it sucks!

-While we are at it, there's no parking lot I know of. You have to park to the side. Not too big of a deal, but you'll probably have to do a three point turn when you leave.

Act V: "The Bitching (What Whirls My Winds)"

-Gets pretty bland. Some of the holes are shorter and open without much taste. #1 in my opinion is far better in the long pin that the short. The short is a boring straight hole while the long pin is only a little further but behind a big tree. The long looked a lot funner. #4 is another boring ace run. Good opportunity for an ace, but still boring. That's what whirls my winds.

-You are going to need two bottles of pepto. One for the driveway when you depart and the other for this: #15 is incomplete and is as infuriating as the driveway to get there. Both will make you think there's a freshly burnt match stuck up your rectum. There's no fairway, a few tiny gaps but if you miss (very likely since they are tiny), you will kick either left or right. There's a whole lot of weeds, debris and probably some other stuff in there. That's what whirls my winds. Hole #17's short pin should be a par four or simply not exist. It's 400' and a legitimate dogleg left with heavy rough on both sides. The long pin looked a little fun. Over 500' and further down the trail.

-Ends with a 145' dogleg left severe hyzer. #18 could be a better wooded hole but it's just kind of irritating. You have to throw a very weak hyzer with something very overstable. Those are typically safe shots you throw to escape trouble and those shots aren't very fun.

-The rough is very dense but that's just a new course issue that'll fix in time. I must say, I was 40' from the pin on #7 but was in the woods, so I had to pitch out and I missed the putt for par. That's what whirls my winds.

Other Thoughts:

Act VI: The Final Thought

-Whirlwind is secluded. Pretty far from the gems such as Warriors Path, Winged Deer, and Harmon Hills. If I lived in Greeneville, I'd play here frequently only because it would be the easiest to get to. It's not a bad course, it has its positives so it's definitely worth a shot. After all, you may enjoy it more than I did.

-As for me, I don't think this course is my taste. I loved a couple of the holes here, but so many gave a lukewarm feeling. Doesn't mean you'll think the same, but this course to me is just okay. I liked the front nine but didn't like the back nine. A few holes on the back nine were pretty fun. But more of them were no better than okay.
