Pros:
Beautifully manicured grounds. This course is located in the snow bowl at the base of the mountain. The grass is rich and lush, and shots usually stay where they are placed.
The winds whip through this course strongly, and often in unpredictable directions.
The three tees often give measurably different looks at the basket (especially the blue vs the white) in addition to distance changes.
Intact accurate, signage. The signs are placed at the middle (white) tee, and have representations of red and blue tees on them so you can easily determine their positions.
You basically play around the bowl, and the elevation is used effectively to increase difficulty whether uphill or downhill.
Cons:
Since this is near the Lodge, there is a fair amount of non-DG traffic. Hole 4 basket is next to a parking lot and uncontrolled drives can get you into a heated discussion.
This course is very open and does not force players away from hyzers to more controlled shots. The wind is what forces shots here.
This property is wildly under-utilized for disc golf, with much wooded, hilly acreage around to accommodate many more holes going completely unused. However, what they chose to use was used wisely.
Pay to play.
Other Thoughts:
When I first saw this course, all I could think of was "Oh God, this looks like Shanty Creek DGC" which is a stinker course in Bellaire, MI that I unfortunately played twice. The signage and design were very similar and I girded myself for another waste of an hour.
I was pleasantly surprised. While Shanty Creek has only one hole over 300', this course has four 400'+ holes and only 2 under 300'. I found a lot of variety in what is largely a course comprised of field shots. It helps that they didn't place a volleyball court in the middle of 3 holes (like Shanty Creek) and employed sensible par values.
The blue tees are almost twice as long as the red tees. I very much like how you can play all 3 tees (blue, white, and red) for 27 holes that start off with a nice set of longer holes, followed by a set of mid-length, and ending with a 9 hole ace run. That is definitely worth $2.
Being so close to Highbridge, I imagine that this course is largely overlooked, but I plan to play it again when I return along with Indianhead Mountain . . . if it ever reopens.
This was definitely the best of the three 9 hole courses we played this day coming home. Whitecap is incredibly picturesque and quite a fun little warm-up for Highbridge.
