Blaze Orange Baskets

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 31, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Blaze Orange Baskets
-OK Signage
-Good mix of open and technical
-Mostly disc golf only area

Cons:

-Mostly in river bottom, so very sandy
-Somewhat gravel tee boxes, some inundated with sand
-Way back to the course a little sketchy, especially if it's been wet
-Watch for those on the walking trail along the left side of #8

Other Thoughts:

Wild River is a decent course located on the west side of Mapleton, IA. Follow the road all the way to river. First tee is just beyond the gate for the walking path. Only real elevation comes on the first hole. #2- #7 are in the river bottom. #8 and #9 are up on a small plateau with the walking trail up and to the left. The ones in the flood plain can have some iffy footing on the tee boxes which are a space of gravel. Signage is OK with hole number, distance, and par. Flow was decent. Walking trail is in play sightly on #8, but it is up and to the left, only an errant shot will get up there. #9 is short and a little more away from the trail, so it isn't really in play. I didn't mind the shorter holes, overall it was a good mix. Nothing to really boom one out on, but enough to have some finesse. I did play in early spring, so the rough along #2, #3 and #4 were not bad, as of yet. I would guess it depends on the year, if there had been flooding, or not. Definitely unplayable in such a high water event. The river is to the left on #2 and #3. but not really in play. I enjoyed my round here. Watch your footing and enjoy the blaze orange baskets. I would play here again, if in the area.

Orange Baskets 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 1, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

+If you remember one thing from this course, it will likely be the awesome orange Mach Xs. The are sweet. Every course should have colored baskets. They are easier to see and look better. All of these baskets also had number plates and 8/9ths of them were facing the right direction toward the tee.
+All holes have signs that have number, par, and distance on them.
+The course is easy to follow. Once you find the course it is always pretty clear where you are going.
+The designers used this land well. The land is a semi-wooded flood plain next to the Maple River.
+Shouldn't lose a disc here. You might have to look in the rough sometimes but it didn't seem too bad.
+Holes vary from 185-370 so there's some variation in length. Some are more open and some are pretty tight.
+Some ace runs available for almost all players. 3,4,9 for sure can be targeted by most.
+This part of the park should be DG only and you shouldn't have issues with other park users. Check your left side on hole 8 to make sure nobody is coming down the path.

Cons:

-Hole 9 is a dud of a hole after the others. It is almost entirely open and is the shortest hole on the course.
-Tees are natural. The main page said concrete so I changed it. The photos look like it used to be some crushed rock but that has all but disappeared in the 3 years since they put the course in.
-The tee signs are backwards in my opinion. They are informative enough for this course but I would prefer them the other way.
-This course is definitely a flood plain and it is sandy. I would imagine that it floods fairly often in the spring. Hopefully that doesn't damage the course too badly.
-Very little elevation change.
-This course won't challenge most advanced players. Will be appealing to beginners and intermediates.

Other Thoughts:

+I updated the description for directions. It was unclear before. Go all the way past the park down the gravel road to find the course.
+Overall, this course is definitely aimed at newer players up to intermediates. I had fun playing here on a windy summer day. It wasn't super challenging but had just enough distance and obstacles to keep things interesting.
+Best holes:
1- The one hole that has a bit of elevation change- downhill. Has some trees dispersed amongst the fairway.
4- Short ace run but you do need to hit the right line.
7- Most wooded hole on the course and a lot of fun. Fairly straight with a slight left bend.
-Worst holes:
3- very open and short.
9- also very open and short.
