Winnsboro City Park

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 24, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

-- Tee signs. They are hand drawn but have the necessary information.
-- Best holes are 2, 3 and 5. Two is 274 feet straight ahead. A road (and some trees) are left of the fairway. Three is 260 feet RHBH with the basket around the corner of some bushes. Five is 222 feet with the basket down from the fairway, in some trees with a small ditch/creek (dry 2023) behind the basket.
-- Mach V baskets.
-- Red arrow in the bottom of each catching basket to direct you to the next tee. No course map is posted, but navigation is easy.

Cons:

-- Land is not great for disc golf. It's almost completely flat with a few trees (mostly at the edges of the property) and a very small creek/ditch that was dry July 2023.
-- Maintenance. Grass/weeds are at least knee-high on most of the course. A sign on the bulletin board by No. 1 asks people to score/record their rounds so that the course will get mowed more often. Seems backward to me. The course needs to be in decent shape in order to convince people to play. Even without the downed trees (see Other Thoughts), nobody wants to slog through knee- or waist-high grass/weeds to play. If this course with its total lack of maintenance is people's introduction to disc golf, those people are unlikely to play a second time.
-- Natural tee pads. Other than the sign, they are not marked in any way.

Other Thoughts:

-- No. 1 tee is on the right side of Hope Lane after you pass the Winnsboro Animal Shelter. A nice bulletin board has plenty of information.
-- The adjoining park has an equestrian or rodeo facility, playground, swimming pool and RV camping.
-- It appears a major storm came through the area. Dozens of trees are down. Based on the color of the wood, they've been down awhile. No. 1 is not playable because a large tree blocks the front of the tee, and several trees are down at the basket. Probably half of the holes have trees or limbs down that impact play, but those holes are playable.
