The Swiss-Army Knife of NZ Discing

Reviewed: Played on:May 13, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

• Probably the most disc golf content in one location within New Zealand. The main area has both a beginner-friendly blue layout and intermediate red layout that play significantly different (not even visiting the baskets in the same order). Plus there is an advanced 18 hole black course that plays half in the red/blue territory and half beyond. Then there is an adjacent 18 hole green tee putting course AND a separate orange tee 9 hole which could serve as an ace run round, warm-up/cool-down, or a kid/practice course.
• The signage and navigation are surprisingly good considering the complexity implicit in the above.
• Everything is well-maintained, from the fairways to the baskets. My thanks to the caretakers and/or community.
• Some moderate use of elevation changes, but nothing dangerous.
• Variety. Some open shots, left vs right bends, open vs tight holes, a few interesting risk-reward setups, a few structures that play as part of the mix.
• Lots of parking! I've never seen so many bike racks in one place.
• Who doesn't love a hanging basket?
• Beautiful area! A great place to shake off the city soot.
• There is a pro shop on site! They have hot food, restroom facilities, and even discs. As a foreigner, I was very pleased to snag the local disc brand with Maori-inspired logos. That said, the store and staff are much more focused on the neighboring mountain biking course.

Cons:

• Courses crisscross constantly, even within a single layout. Players are polite, but safety hazards abound. Due to all the simultaneous layouts in the main area, you never know which direction discs might come at you. Being from the US, where this is rare and discouraged, I scoffed imperiously (as one does), but I expect most players won't mind. The last hole played pretty close to parking.
• Related to the above, the course felt cramped at times. The hole designs are mostly pretty solid, but nothing with length (I think most everything was a par 3), multiple lines, or multiple stages. Given how great the land is, I wish it had the luxury to sprawl a bit.
• Serviceable, but often short, slippery, and/or uneven tee pads.
• There are a few places where there are livestock fences that need to be stepped over. Carts or those with mobility limitations may struggle.
• The red/blue layouts ease you in, but in the back of the grounds there is pretty high potential for lost discs in large Sarlacc Pit-style clumps of foliage.
• A bit of a drive from just about anywhere. The access road gets bumpy and there aren't many signs until right up close.

Other Thoughts:

• None of the course descriptions, maps, or websites at the time of this review matched each other or the layouts I experienced. My guess is that this course is being continuously tweaked and expanded, so it maybe very different yet again by the time you are reading this.
• I only played the Red layout, but wish I had time to do the full rainbow of tees. If you're going for that, expect a long, enjoyable day.
• Other cool stuff in the immediate area: mountain biking, treetop ropes course, hiking.
* If you are visiting Auckland and wondering if it is worth the drive, the answer is YES.

Pros:

Good variety of courses which can be played in pretty much any weather. The Black course starts in a heavily wooded area and moves around to pretty open playing in the back 9

Cons:

Can get busy on the weekends
