First Official Round Played at Woodlands Nature Reserve 2+ years

Pros:

Woodlands Nature Reserve. Just wow. Isolation, scenery, and serenity. Our sport would be so much better if more course were of this ilk.
- An absolute gem. It's a solid, if not quite spectacular, disc golf course. That's just for the course. Throw in a course that plays between multiple bodies of water and offers hole after hole of stunning views. There aren't many courses like this.
- A fun, flowing layout. 15 of 18 holes are between 224 - 325 feet. The shortest hole is only 212 feet, with only two holes longer than 400 feet - #4 & 18. The course offers lots of birdie opportunities.
- Great use of the water. To be clear, the water never directly comes into play on a single hole - no throwing over water or anything like that. That said, you're throwing around the edge of it on #4, throwing to a basket close to it on #5, teeing off alongside it on #12, 14, & 15. You also have it in play slightly on #2 & 9 if you sail one 60 feet offline.
- #5 is a great hole, especially if you want to test your mettle. From the tee, it looks as if you're throwing directly towards the water. At only 248 feet, you should be able to control a disc and/or aim far enough left that the water isn't in play. However…the further left you throw off the tee, the longer your putt is to the basket. All that said, the basket is 30 feet or so from the water, so there is room to operate. Now, if you're brave enough to aim right of the basket off the tee, you sir are braver than I am.
- #4 is a fun par 4, multi-shot layout that plays around the edge of the lake/giant pond. You can throw around or over the edge of the water rather easily. There's plenty of room to the left. You could tuck the basket closer to the water to make it a more difficult second shot.
- #14 & 15 tee off alongside the main lake. Two spectacular tee shots. Two amazing views. Depending on the time of day and/or time of year, these are going to be the most scenic holes in the low country.
- A couple other holes have fun/interesting designs. Amongst them are #6 with the basket behind trees; #9 with a basket on a slight stand; #10 with a blind tee shot to a dogleg left basket; #13 with a basket behind a cluster of trees and bushes; and #17 with the basket under a low hanging tree. My favorite from this lot is #13 followed by 9. The others are what they are.
- The scenery. The scenery. The scenery. From everywhere on the course, you can turn in some direction to see some form of water. You're also not dealing with crowds, noise, other park goers, or any of the doldrums of a typical disc golf round. You want to be one with nature and/or your thoughts? You want to get away while only being 25 minutes from downtown? This course offers so much to savor.

Cons:

There could be much more challenge here. I felt as if this was a good initial step before the property fully jumped into disc golf. Granted, a member of management confirmed this to me before my round.
- Tee pads are short. For a full run up, you're either starting behind the tee pad, or avoiding it completely. Granted, you shouldn't need extended runups on most holes.
- It's a 5 minute walk from the parking lot to the first tee. There will be someone out there who has an issue with this.
- There will also be someone who has an issue with signing a waiver and/or following the reserve's rules. Hopefully, you're also the person who's too cheap to pay $10 and will stay away from this course.
- Initially, players need to sign up beforehand and sign their waiver. Whether it's on here, UDisc, or the local Facebook page, someone is going to ignore all the notices about pre-registering, try to show up, and then whine and moan that the gate was locked and they drove out of their way for nothing. Don't worry, you'd also be the person complaining about the price for camping here as well, so it's probably for the better you couldn't get on the grounds.
- A slight complaint is the simplistic stretch of holes that is #7 - 12. Other than the blind tee shot on #10, there's not a lot of challenge on these holes. Basically, you can be overly aggressive. And unless you shank one left on #12, you're not getting punished.

Other Thoughts:

Woodlands is a special place. I really wanted to savor my round, play a little bit slower, and soak it all in. Of course, just when I want to do that, I manage to have one of my best rounds in months, throwing excellent tee shot after excellent tee shot. Lots of short birdie putts meant I was playing fast.
- This is why we should support and encourage pay-to-play courses. If the more serious players can avoid the overcrowded parks, we should seek that. No more backups behind the crowd of 1-disc throwers. No more dealing with trash on the course. No more having to ask multiple times to play through. Just a bunch of other players who enjoy the game as much as you do.
- Play this course twice when you're here. In its initial launch, players are given three-hour blocks to play. Take advantage of that time.
- Unhumble brag. I played this course this first morning it was officially open. I was already planning to be in town that weekend, and it just so happened to coincide with the grand opening. The brag is that I was the first player to complete an official round here. Glad it happened here.
- I've played more than 130 courses in South Carolina as of this review. This is hands down the most scenic of all courses in South Carolina. It ranks near the top for all courses I've played altogether.
- Take away this scenery, and this is a fun, but 'only' good course. Think along the lines of Earlewood or Timmons for S.C. references. Throw in the locale and this course has hints of a special vibe.
- This is the second best Charleston area course. It's behind Trophy Lakes, but better than Socastee and Naval Weapons Stations. A solid 3.5. And a must play.
