Ace Runs Galore 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 19, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

I won't explain getting here or parking , since you never drive here just to play the Bobcat Course . . Still , Bobcat is located in the woods on the opposite side as the Lynx and Cougar . They list the lengths as all 100' here , but the real lengths are somewhere between 50' and 120' ( I'm guessing ) . The holes run sort of in a counter clockwise fashion .
The tee pads are crudely formed dirt tees , and some are framed by falling branches from the woods . The signs are just numbers hanging on trees . No way of getting lost because all of the walks between the short holes are short . The baskets are the Instep temp baskets . I guess they are real baskets . The whole course starts and ends in the woods . If you are older than 8 , just bring your putter to hole #1 . All of the holes may be par 2's , but not all of fairways are open and straight . I think I only drew bucket or chains on 2 out of 18 holes . Bobcat will be the fastest 18 holes of your life . I think I finished in about 15 - 18 minutes . Bobcat is what you take your son or daughter to after they walked with you while you play Lynx . It is also okay to work on long putts if you are trying to put some distance between you and a foursome that started before you . If you have a couple of friends with you , play a skins game and the first person to ace a hole gets the pot . I put #18 as the signature hole as a joke , but it is one of the longest holes and breaks left to right down a fairway that I could touch the fairway widths with my arms .

Cons:

#1 Short/Challenge - It's a kids course . What did you expect ?!?
There was a family playing on it while I was playing the Lynx side and seemed to be having fun .
Equipment - If I am to call this a course , then I have to rip on the equipment . Everything over here looks to have been thrown together . I mean , if you pilfer a bunch of house numbers , use the old baskets here after updating the ones on your better course , and use fallen branches , then you made the course for FREE !!!!
Bring bug spray . The insects over here seem more aggressive than the ones over at Cougar and Lynx .

Other Thoughts:

I don't want to really knock this course . It serves a purpose , and since the baskets are portable insteps , they can always stretch the course to make longer holes and add tee boxes if they want .
This is a small course to help you unwind after your round , or warm up your putter before you play , or reward your kids .
Personally , If I lived locally , I would take my kids up here if they Misbehaved ! I could make them run wind sprints until they build up a good sweat , then turn them loose for a couple of rounds on Bobcat with no bug spray . Trust me . They will be in tears before the 10 hole .
Playing Bobcat is not a strong option for being up here , Unless you are a Course Collector . If so , you will be delighted to bag an 18 holer in the time it takes to fix a sandwich .

Not really worth it 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 15, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Good as a quick warmup
- Free to play with the actual course

Cons:

- The baskets
- Very rough
- Entirely comprised of pitch and putt holes
- Catastrophic level of biting insects
- No real teepads (not that you need them)
- Navigation is tricky in spots as the signs are lacking in quality and specifics.

Other Thoughts:

While the Woods at Beauty Hill is wonderful, the Bobcat adds very little to the place as a standalone course (which is how I will be reviewing it - keep that in mind). The old, thick chained baskets that were so universally loathed on the main course have been put to use as the targets for the 18 forty to eighty foot holes that have been carved out here. The Bobcat is positioned in a low, swampy, heavily wooded area, and as such the rough is very thick and the mosquitos (which are persistent yet bearable on the main course) come in vast, bloodsucking swarms. The holes themselves are fairly well balanced (for holes this short) and do provide a decent warm up before battling through the tight lines of the Lynx course. I can't see anyone showing up to just play the Bobcat, so it shouldn't be seen as a detriment to the place as a whole. It's good to see that effort is going into adding to and keeping Beauty hill up to speed with the many new and awesome courses in the southern Maine and NH area, and the new, even tougher full length course in the works promises to be a bruiser. Basically, as a standalone, the Bobcat is subpar at best. Seen as what it is, an extra bonus and warmup for the Lynx, there's nothing wrong with it per se, but it feels rather forced nonetheless. Play it if you're there already, preferably before the real round begins.
