Zalud Park Disc Golf Course Feels Like It’s About 50% Complete! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 28, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Zalud Park is a decent sized city park with all the things you'd expect, picnic area, children's play area, ball fields, and a low wetlands area. The disc course consists of nine Discatchers with the yellow band and #'s, randomly placed around the park. There are currently no signs and no tee pads of any kind. Playing it now is just a round of safari.

Someone who cares, be it an individual, a group or best yet, the local disc golf club, needs to schedule an appointment with the park's department person is in charge. Very nicely explain to him/her that the course is not complete the way it is. There are lots of different routes to go with both the signs and tee pads. The easiest and cheapest way to go would be to simply put in a front board for each tee pad. It could be a 4" x 4" or something a little more stout. There are a couple of places where the board could butt right up against the sidewalk using what is already there. Metal house numbers could be screwed onto the board for an easy fix. Remember to emphasize how concerned you are for the safety of all park users. I would nicely suggest that some representatives of the disc golf community (players) be allowed to help with the design as to where the pads will be placed.

Cons:

If you actually get any kind of permanent tees, then have someone with some computer knowledge draw up a map.

This is hardly a course the way it stands now. I need tees to know where to throw from!

I can't speak for the business of the park as I played early on a weekday morning.

Other Thoughts:

With even the most basic of tee pads, this could be a perfectly average little nine hole park disc golf course, just like about 2000 others in the USA. As it lies, it's far below average and frustrating for most golfers.

Starter Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 15, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

If you are new to the game and live in P'Ville, it's a good place to start, without having to drive to Visalia or Bako. Also, if it was on a day when it is NOT crowded, it could be a fun place for an "Ace Race" event since all targets are reachable in one throw (if you are above the "novice" level). The layout is OK, and easily walkable. Drinking faucets and bathroom on site. Short, 9 hole course. If you are looking for a course where you can achieve a score of 20 or better for 9 holes, this will do the trick. Very easy Par 27, unless you are a novice. Hey, I'm fairly average and I aced the first hole!

Cons:

The layout could be rearranged a bit, simply by altering numbers on a few baskets. As it currently stands, you have to throw over a possibly congested area from #4 to go to #5. Also, it appears there are two options to reach #8 from #7 - one, throw between the two softball fields (if not being used), two - walk around the furthest softball field (if it's being used) and throw from next to the small school's fence. The biggest limiter at this park is the amount of pedestrian traffic and park use, since it is a rare local green spot in the area. I played on a weekday early afternoon and still had to navigate around several people using the park. Finally, there really are no "pads" or even marked throwing areas. There are a couple of places where sawdust is on the ground, and you can assume those to be "pads" for the next hole, otherwise it is anybody's guess where to throw from. To start, I threw #1 from in front of the cement wall that is part of the picnic area just to the right of the parking lot where you enter the parking area. #1 basket is straight ahead of you toward the main road. From that point on you have to kind of "feel" your way around the course and throw from somewhere that kind of makes sense (to you). Someone could fix this issue pretty easily by putting down rubber pads, or even just placing post markers in the ground to mark the throwing areas. Speaking of post markers, there is a tall post with the number 5 on it, but it doesn't seem to have anything to do with hole #5, since from that area, the only basket you can throw to is #4, since the post is close to #3's basket.

Other Thoughts:

Something is better than nothing! P'Ville's only DG course, to date. If you need putting practice, this is a great place to do it, because you can avoid other park users at several basket locations where they are not likely to congregate (1,3,4,6,8,9 should all offer some putting freedom). It's not a "go to" course for DG enthusiasts but it can help you hone in on your short game. Just be cognizant of your surroundings, kids could be running right across your path at any moment. If you are new to the game, or want to help someone out who is new to the game, and they are visiting or live in P'Ville, give it a try.

High hopes and it could be much better! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 4, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is an aesthetically pleasing course, as I pulled in I was excited to see about 4-5 brand new baskets on the horizon, it has a wonderful parking area where it is a short walk to where many of the holes are.

The baskets are new and shiny and it gives the impression of a good course, the landscaping is well done and despite having a lack of space there is a good spacing between the holes and had there been a clear place to tee from, this would have been a very enjoyable course.

It is in a good place in the town, a nice neighborhood and despite having to guess where to tee from; it was a decent challenge due to different elevations and a nice wee crosswind.

If you are looking for a place to get a quick 9 holes in and don't mind where you shoot from this could be a good course for you.

It could also be a course to rack up aces as there is the possibility of short holes being favorable to people with the right type of shot.

Cons:

Because of the "tee issue" (explained below) I spend a lot of time looking for a post that I am not confident existed. (#1 post/tee) I noticed on my way to the #1 target that there was a post with #4 spray painted on it and could see that target on a hill to my left hand side. Eventually I started at 4 but due to the time I had wasted I played as many holes as I could find.

It is a neighborhood course that the purists will count down because there is no concrete, no defined teeing area or indication of how far the hole was away.

The general public was curious what I was doing there and I attracted two boys staring at my efforts and was supportive of good shots. But there was a party picnicking near one of their targets (it is a free country after all, it is their right to use their park in a way that they see fit) due to the shade a tree offered close by so beware of the non-disc public as I didn't see them until after I threw my first disc.

It needs consultation between the city/planners and the local DG community as there did not seem to be any logic on the progression of the holes and did not appear to have been thought out by someone who was a regular player

Other Thoughts:

It has the foundation of a good course, here are my thoughts to improve the course. It needs the following...

1) marked tees
2) posts that gave an approximate distance
3) marked teeing areas (even dirt)
4) some thought on using the natural features of the park such as the hills, valleys and trees to give it a decent challenge
5) a map somewhere in the park giving a player a clue the thought behind the planning of the course

and this could be a tidy course.

However with local knowledge and knowing that the city is broke and some residents do not have water, I would doubt that DG is very high up on the city chambers meetings.

Neighborhood Park with 9 Targets 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 12, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Yikes! I hate to be the bearer of bad news. I only wrote this review because the course did not have one yet. To be clear, I wasn't even really able to fully "play" this course as explained below.

Pros:

It has targets.

You can play nine of holes disc golf from tee areas and targets of your choice.

It is a nice little park with green grass and shade trees and I took some photos.

There was a full service restroom with electricity and running water.

I have played several neighborhood nine hole parks that did not have marked tees. I have played practice courses with several unmarked tees and target options. This is a little neighborhood park with 9 targets. That is generally better than no disc golf at all.

Cons:

Tees are not well marked and it is difficult to know where to go next.

The targets appear to be strewn about the park in perhaps a counter clockwise direction. I stopped to play with my college age daughter on a disc golf road trip. After we roamed around a bit, she found what appeared to be the tee for 3. Since we had already trekked around so much, we figured we would go ahead start at 3. We found targets for all the holes but we can't be certain we ever found the correct tees. We weren't sure if the posts we found with numbers were for tees or the picnic areas because they didn't really correspond with the targets we could see.

This course was designed and/or installed by someone that had not played disc golf. To top it all off, the targets were installed incorrectly AND permanently. That will make the inevitable redesign or relocation of the targets that much harder.

Confusing. We were next to a post that said 5 and we finally found the target for 5 on the other side of the park over the swamp area and the basketball courts.

Not worth the drive. I certainly wouldn't drive out of my way to play this one again.

Other Thoughts:

Probably best to play early in the morning when there are not a lot of other park users. The people here don't understand that there is a disc golf course in the park. They picnic on the tees and hang out next to the targets.

I am going to call the park and find out if there is anything I can do to help.

Again, I normally do not review a course if I haven't played all the holes, however, I don't think that would actually be possible in the current layout. I already invested a ton of time walking back and forth looking for tees to the targets I found.

I honestly considered giving it a 0 rating, but it has 9 targets and a restroom with running water. I think it can be saved with tee signs and some new number decals.
