Movement in top 10

I wonder how easy it would be to have an annual DGCR top 10? Seems like it can take so long for good courses to get onto the overall top 10 here, and we've all discussed the fact that older reviews propping up traditional top 10 courses may not reflect current conditions/reviews. There could still be a threshold, say at least 4 or 5 reviews from trusted reviewers.

Just looking for some way I guess to better highlight some of these great up and coming courses.
Case in point; Lake Marshall Lions opened in 2017 and only has 13 reviews. We are talking about a conscensus top 10 course taking a minimum of 5 years to be eligible for the top 10. The top ten is yesterday's news.

Your point is well taken, but keep in mind that it was probably 2020 before all 18 holes at Lions were playable. Some folks probably held off reviewing the course until it was complete.

Well, that didn't exactly open the floodgates. Only 7 reviews since 2020 is ridiculous considering this site has more than 95,000 members.

Some news coming in from Hawk Hollow after two horrendous storms involving high wind bringing down trees in the area. The basket can be replaced, but those beautiful trees that will take a long time. The course is supposed to open up next month.

"Walked the course today for the first time since either storm. Going to be a little easier in some places eventually. One basket damaged (on hole 1 of all places). Hole 7 and Hole 12 both thoroughly thrashed- hours and hours of saw work there. Didn't walk up 6 but imagine it is similar with all the cedar in there."

We have welding equipment so can fix the basket. The most challenging part of this process will be the enormous number of big limbs that are broken but still hanging by something way up in a tree out of reach of a 12 foot pole saw. On most parts of the course I could gain a lot of height with a tractor and loader but the 2 holes that are in the worst shape are the 2 worst spots on the course for tractor access- 7 I can get to with the appropriate (meaning big) tractor, 12 is simply inaccessible in that respect.

Players who review courses are few and far between in Virginia.
Even so, when you have a world-class 3 course destination complex, I would think you would be drawing DGCR members from out of state, near and far.

I know I'm the only reviewer from Virginia Beach to Williamsburg. There's just a few in the Richmond area.

Hawk Hollow, with hanging limbs it sounds dangerous not just for the players, but also for the grazing cows. For any larger trees laying across fairways here's a suggestion. You recently played in a tournament a New Quarter and perhaps noticed larger trees laying across fairways 5, 14, and 16 and a few others. Where the park took a chainsaw stripped off the branches and cut a walkway thru the trees. I think that would greatly enhance the beautiful natural setting of Hawk Hollow, as leaving them where they lay. I did notice on my round back in August trees laying in a matter on holes 2 and 3. Or maybe that would interfere with the cows grazing on the property, and perhaps tractor operations to support them?

Jarva is still higher-up in my personal wish list. :D

Jarva out after the redesign. Blue Ribbon Pines- Main back ( I'm assuming ) in the top ten.

Wow! All the ratings were wiped clean, when I saw that it had me choking on the peanuts I was munching on. That's what I call the Mother of all "Movement in the Top Ten" movements. It must of been a major redesign where it no longer resembles the course that brought it into the top ten?

The sad part is, we'll never know just how good it really was... :\

Is there anyone who's played the old layout,as well as some other Top 10's, who can provide some sort of comparison/reality check?

..which I guess is a completely moot point, now. :|

I played the 27-hole Järva and have played 7 of the current Top 10. Old Järva was absolutely Top-10 worthy, although admittedly probably not #1 overall. Lots of hole to hole variety, beautiful setting, and high fun factor vs. backbreaking challenge. I'd call it a potent stew of Harmon Hills, Flip, and RR. I liked it as much as those three and am really glad I had the opportunity to play it before the redesign. I don't see how any reasonable reviewer could've called it less than a 4.5.

You know what course was even better than Järva? Tampere in Nokia, Finland. What a gem. Definitely a contender for #1 overall.

Thank you. Precisely the type of response I was hoping for!

BRP is legendary in MN. But it's just kinda OK. Don't get me wrong, it's got a lot of pretty cool holes. But a lot of blahness too. Great pro shop, food shack in the middle, great owner's and locals etc. But the golf is not top ten worthy. Top ten in the Twin Cities for sure. I need to play it again and update my review. I'd put at least 30 courses above it, from my small sample size.

If i ever make it back to Minneapolis, BRP will be my target course. based on what ive read, i fully expect to rate it 4.5, but i also expect it to fall outside my personal top ten.

BRP is going to be one of the nicest looking/most well kept courses that you have played. It has a bit of WOW factor on Hole 4- 400+ tunnel between tall trees. It has water and decent variety of distance.

What it doesn't have is any elevation. Almost completely flat. It has a number of holes that are pretty open with just a little stream in the middle. It's also not overly challenging compared to most highly rated courses. I have enjoyed every time that I have played here. I initially gave it a 5 as an 18 year old with limited DG experience. Eventually, I had to change it to a 4.5 as I played it more and played many other courses.

No respectable reviewer will give it less than 4.0. Most will give it 4.5. Those that are homers or haven't played other high end courses will give it a 5.
