Lessons (hiring a pro)

Yes, video is included, I've learned a lot about my own performance in other sports by video. You think you are doing something, but you are not or worse.

Rationalization, exactly.

In many sports I've done as a pioneer, there was no feedback except yourself and pictures or Super 8. I'm an adult, I still throw the disc myself, I see my lessons as a fair advantage. I do the work, I practice and my game is mine.

I'll be nervous, it will be ackward but the the pro will put me at ease and then we can get to it.

My wife said, "You are going to take lessons? Are you going to tell ____ & ____?"

"He'll no M, don't you dare tell those kooks, they will rip me up."

"Then I will have to tease you for them."

We are stale, progress is sloowww, our discs land next to each other. I'm having a blast playing but I'm not happy with anything unless I'm getting better. Fortunately, we aid each other if a obvious bad habit develops...

I'm happy with all responses here, they all pertain. If anything, maybe this thread will help push someone off the fence, if not, cool. I'm cool getting it done on my own, just don't tell my two kook friends, those guys will tear me to shreds.

Actually, after I took a lesson and started playing better one of my friends took a lesson to help his game. No ribbing at all.

My friends do not take discing all that seriously. One of them is getting pretty good by just doing it and I am really happy to see that. Now that I am understanding how to send them BH, my game is changing. My scores are dropping but the will recover and I will get better. Hiring a coach is really going to help, I am excited about it and am thankful for the replies that I am receiving here.

This place surprises me at times, good surprises.

I'm often contacted and asked for lessons. I always refuse the money and just enjoy playing a round and discussing the game. I think it's all a part of giving back to the game that I love.

I find it hilarious that people say it's a rip off to get one on one lessons from people who actually know what they are doing and know how to teach you. Most people think that brand new driver/mid/putter is going to make their game better and don't have a second thought of spending $15 a pop sometimes ranging in the hundreds of dollars to find that magical disc that makes their rating move up 30 points. One on one private lessons ARE worth the money, buying every disc in the world when two or three will work if you know what you are doing is not worth the money.

2 years at this, ever Sunday +.

I promised myself to learn on my own, put in the time and now take lessons or coaching. I'm signed up and counting off days.

Personally I think the money will be well spent.

I have ideas how to approach this (open mind, no attitude) but there is a talent pool here that I respect. Looking for comments and questions, to ask or what I should expect.

Thanks in advance.

Adam

p.s. I hope this question has been asked before and I am replicating it word for word as I did not research it first.

Hey Adam,
Are you signed up with Dan? I was thinking of taking some lessons with him aswell..

I dont get out and play as much as id like because I am new to the area and my one and only friend does not like DG.. Maybe we can meet up for a round sometime. Where do you usually play?

I got some coaching from Dan-O a couple years ago. I can definately say it helped with some of my technique. He's not exactly a power-player, so I wouldn't look to him for help with distance so much as finese and accuracy. He helped my brother a bunch with his putting technique as well. I actually just spoke with Dan the other day about some course management and decision-making help.

Most people learn through making friends with players that are better than them. If you have more $ than time, paying a pro for his time is a valid option. I am no pro but help beginners and ams free of charge. My best lessons have been from one of TN's top pros and I think that all I've ever done for him besides being his friend, is buying him lunch one time.

Dan G?

No?

I think we are talking about the same guy.

I'm not looking to throw into the next zip code, just looking to learn the techniques to be able to teach myself how to throw as far as I can, accurately and to be able to bend and shape my flights.

I'm even looking forward to trying a different disc company. I know there are other discs besides Innova, I've chosen them to get to understand disc golf. Now I am ready to try some other companies. I'm taking a methodical approach to the game and it is fun.

Looks like what you said is what I'm looking for as well.

I appreciate your chiming in, looking forward to meeting you one day.

Take care.

I have a family farm in Tennessee. I often fly into Nashville and drive the Purchase Parkway to Northwest Tennessee. I looked at a pretty open course in ahh, can't remember the town, army base, Clarksville? Next to a airport or helicopter LZ. Nothing wrong with a wide open course but this one didn't really have the pull for me to seek it out again and play. If it were my home course, then it would be so cool so for those reading, my apologies if it is your home course. If you are open and close to my path, then I will contact you next time I am in the area...

Yeah, Dan G. His is a cool guy, and his prices seem pretty reasonable for what he has to share. He has been around so long and has so much useful information..
I have not taken a lesson with him, but I went for a free driving and putt clinic and he helped out my putt and driving grip in a very short time.

Yeah, I'm referring to Dan G. Everyone calls him DanO though. Super nice guy and does have a lot to share. He was a touring pro, before there were touring pros. I think he has over 100 tournamnet wins. That is an incredible accomplishment. I'm really trying to work on my mental game, and I am going to ask him for help with it.

Cool, he knows some of my friends that are into it way early.

Seems like a nice guy, he has already helped me in a subtle way.

I'm happy to support a guy making it in disc golf.

People go to school all the time.

I value knowledge and experience.

I'm looking forward to it.

Just give it to him man, money's like dang ol' wind man, feel it when its movin'.

My apologies, I did not see your response.

I play Fountain Hills and Vista Del Camino. I play other courses here and there but those two are my favorites.

If you would like to meet on a Saturday afternoon at Los Olivos for a quick nine, that would be cool with me. I am fishing in the mountains this Saturday, maybe next Saturday or one coming up.

My score was better when I was driving FH but has sunk some since I am learning BH but my fun has increased. I am so happy to be learning how to drive and see my distance increase...

But this isn't about that.

Let's do Los Olivos, short nine and take it from there.

Cool?

Dan O is awesome and i learned a lot from him during my time in AZ. You might not realize some of your form flaws until someone points them out. Someone that knows what they're talking about and can also give advice on how to fix the issues.

Great, that is even more than I was looking for.

This will not turn into a critique about him, for you negative "I would never..." types.

It was not my intent to expose the person and there is no shame in what I am doing.

As a matter of fact, I am really excited to be molded a little better, shaped more efficiently, and have a resource, a inside look into a level of play that many of us wonder about.

Soon enough and for noe I look forward to my Sundays with my oldest friends. I enjoy slicing them up, cutting them to the core then pouring the whole can of salt into the wound.

It's fun to walk the course focused on your own play and stoked to see your mate send one in from so far out, love it.

Sure, I'll tell him you said hey.

I know some of his disc gol friends for as long as he has been at it. I'm thinking that this is going to be a service, a professional acting as such, at least that is what I'm looking for.

Maybe I'll make it this year and tap you on the shoulder...
