Clever Event Formats (with equally clever names)

I like the creative ways people name some of their events. "Okthrowberfest" is a good example, as is "Cold Turkey." I particularly liked Sadjo's recent Chainsaw event with the interesting back story...

What are your favorites? Has an event ever snagged your participation because of a catchy name and interesting format? Any ideas you've had for events based solely on a unique "hook" to get people talking about it?

Two of mine:

Axis and Allies -- a doubles event (hence "allies") where the members of each team get an MVP Axis as part of a player's pack and MUST tee off with the Axis on each hole. Maybe a good night event too, with the transparent MVP plastic being so friendly to LEDs.

Disc or Treat -- should be obvious; a Halloween kids event where they not only play the course in a non-competitive manner, but they trick-or-treat at each tee and get goodies (of course some snacks/candy, but also DG-specific treats like minis, stickers, etc.) from that tee's "resident," as well as some spooks and monsters to pop out of the woods. Oh, and jack o' lanterns. :D

I actually hope to make both of these a reality next year...the Halloween event has been brewin' in my noggin for a while now; the Axis one obviously a lot less so since the disc just came out.

...and of course, my genius creation of the Ace Revenge, already twice implemented and seemingly more popular with my players than the actual Ace Race.

We have a tourney the week after Thanksgiving every year, Turkey & Chains. Instead of "5th annual", we say "5th helping". No special format, but I like the clever enumeration.

I did Black Friday doubles for a couple of years. I always posted on local forums the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and had 30+ show up on Friday. I also did a Christmas Hangover event a couple of years on the 26th.

What's the 'Ace Revenge'?

What's the 'Ace Revenge'?

I modeled it after the Ace Race when I decided that I, as TD, should provide some extra incentive for people to drive out to my event...an Ace Race is over pretty quick, as I'm sure anyone who's played an exclusive Ace Race (that is, one with no side events or other time-extending methodologies applied) can attest to.

Anyway, it's similar to the Ace Race, but we use a points-based system of scoring where A=10, M=3, and P=1 (P for Pole hits, basket and below), and allow people to use their own discs to play the shortened course. This year was where we got Gateway involved (in addition to their own discs, players could upgrade to a Gateway package and get a Wizard to be eligible for one of two portable baskets), and it's very likely that in future years the event will be known as the Gateway Ace Revenge or something similar. We gave away 2 baskets as mentioned, plus other runner-up prizes and CTP discs, and I heard pretty much positive feedback so far! Of course, I learn something each year and end up tweaking something, so it'll probably be a little different next year.

I posted about the Revenge on these boards somewhere, so I'm sure you could prerube it...I know some other folks sounded like they liked the idea and wanted to implement something similar, so you may see them popping up at future Ace Races!...and Dave Mac will be more than happy to get involved, trust me.

Not sure if it is still on going or not but for several years Lightning Lyle Jensen in MN used to run an event call The Moir Mystery Madness. It was held at Moir Park (a Saucer Course) and the first round you got a mystery disc and the second round you could throw anything. The Mystery disc might be a LP, Pringles Lid or a ice cream lid. It was always a lot of fun.

DiscGlow DayNighter - One round at 3 in October, barbecue, then one round starting at dark around 6:30-7:00.

The Turkey Toss (day after Thanksgiving) - yes, we actually have 5 CTPs for a turkey (well, at least 5 gift certificates for the grocery store). I don't know if it is because of the name, but is in its 22nd year and it is one of our most highly attended events.

The Holly Daze - Christmas season tournament - we have a christmas tree that you put a gift under for a gift exchange. This is also highly attended no matter the weather (6 inches of fresh snow, crappy roads, and 20 degree temperatures last year and we still had 50 people show up).

The Headache Bowl - New Year's Day morning

our halloween event is the "666 tournament"
doubles play where you play the first six holes as best shot, second six as alternate shot and last six is best score. we mix it up for the second round.
we also add extra halloween obstacles and "special" O.B. for the event.

A friend of mine over here, his old club makes use of a 'DVD case' in its logo and calls an event 'Single Disc only' which I think is a great idea, both in name and event type. An awesome tie in with single disc editions of movies for the name.

We have a glow tourney the weekend of Halloween. No special name or format but people volunteer to "decorate" different holes & the hole voted as best those people get some kind of a prize. Folks have some weird & scary imaginations!

We do the same thing the weekend after Halloween, decorations are much cheaper :D

For years we ran a single-elimination, match play tournament in March, named (obviously) March Madness. The name wasn't that clever, but the format was pretty unique. We may resurrect it in the future, at a different part of the year, a rename it "Match Madness", just for the minimal change on the banner.

Our fundraiser tournament at Stoney Hill is named "The Battle of Stoney Hill", with a subtitle "....in the fight against heart disease". It has a nice military sound to it. The format, however, is routine.

Lumberton

Lumberton's Aces High Deuces Wild. Two 2 Disc Ace race morning rounds with your choice of discs followed by 6-6-6(best-alt-tough) random dubs in the afternoon.

Love the mystery disc idea! I had a similar idea for an event called "Record Breakers" where I'd go stock up on Goodwill LPs and give each player 3 or so, with the goal being not only to throw and hole out with them, but keep them intact for the whole round...once your records are broken, you're out, so it's kind of an elimination thing. I never got further than that in the planning department, though. :|
