Now that's a pro call-out

First off Barsby is a stand up guy and great for the sport of disc golf, he understands the ins and outs of the sport and has been around for a long time.

If these things are happening in his group during events HE needs to call them out on cheating or other mishaps. This is a self officiated sport, and part of the issue is the pros not standing up for whats right or calling each other on things because of the cliques.

Also when making these accusations and rants people need to be more specific, proactive, and solution oriented. What can be done about these issues? At the end of the rant he says the rulebook needs to be changed, well what needs to be looked at?

There just won't be any mainstream attention given to it unless some real money and sponsorship becomes involved.

I think you have it backwards; my belief is that real money and sponsorship will only become involved when the sport has mainstream attention.

There's some drama, but I think a lot of it comes from frustration. There are a handful of guys out there trying to make a living on this sport and there's just not a lot of money to be had.

For those that don't have steady jobs to fall back on, trying to earn enough to stay on the road can be very stressful.

none of them were drafted to do so.

Fair enough. Putting the chicken or the egg arguement aside, I think we can both agree that real money and sponsorship and mainstream attention are mutually inclusive.

FWIW, I disagree. PDGA-related disc golf is a tiny mismanaged footprint. Disc golf as an interesting recreational activity could achieve some mainstream attention completely independent of its pro tour and competitive world. Easiest example would be via exposure in films and media.

Agree or disagree, try to visualize how these things could be true:
Dane Cook's Tourgasm episode probably furthered public awareness of disc golf more than the PDGA has in its history. Brodie Smith throwing at trash cans is probably the most widely known form of disc golf. Likely that 25%+ of people who recognize a DG basket as such know it from 21 Jumpstreet. Kids are most likely to recognize a basket from Zoe 101. Simple numbers of eyeballs on the media, no judgement as to authenticity of source or content.

I think Pro DG will be fighting for a long long time to reach the public consciousness. No matter how it goes down, I'm certain that Rec DG will reach the mainstream before Pro DG does.

Simple litmus test: is Halo a competitive sport? Who's the chucklehead, the sponsored competitive Halo tourney player or the other bazillion Rec Halo players? This is how the world will view disc golf, with its pro scene as a novelty offshoot of a common leisure game.

Man, it's like you work in the disc golf business or something.

Spot on, as always. We are a sport built on playing said sport, not watching it. The money is going to be in equipment and apparel geared toward the recreational market.

Remember when Dane Cook was funny?

Wow these last 10 pages are more rambling and incoherent than what everyone is accusing Gregg of being.

Somehow facebook, Nikko, and Feldberg got doused with haterade too...

Stay classy DGCR.

21 Jump Street had disc golf in it?

*rewatches entire 21 Jump Street DVD collection*

*doesn't know who Dane Cook is*
*doesn't know who Brodie Smith is; though the name sounds familiar*
*never watched 21 jump street t.v. series or movie*
*sigh, will never know of teh disc golfs*

Totally relevant!! These are all spheres that never need to interact. They can exist without the DG industry/community's effort or knowledge.

edit: btw I've never seen a few of the things I referenced either; I just know about them because they came up on the radar of mainstream exposure in the last few years

fun fact, Disc Nation supplied basket and disc equipment to the tv show Numb3rs. Y'all had a thread about the DG cameo
