2023 Reviewer of the Year

Those of us west of the Rockies have to travel vast amounts of distances in ungodly country like deserts or rain forests to play only a handful of courses while those of you lucky enough to live on the east cost or mid west have tons of courses relatively close by. I'm only about 3 hours from Salt Lake which does have many and good courses so I shouldn't complain. When I lived in Washington it was six hours to Idaho, and three hours to Oregon but I had played most of those courses. Some of you drive 3-6 hours and pass through 3 or more states you lucky basterds!

There's a ton of courses in my area, sure, but only a handful of good ones. Quantity doesn't necessarily mean quality.

Not disputing that things are way more spread out in the Western half of the country.

a) I hope you will play Creekside in Salt Lake, so we can talk about it

b) Our States may be small, but hazardous. They're full of.....people like us.

c) tough luck.

A: Creekside was not even on my radar yet but now that you mention it I will make it priority when I get to SLC. So far the most South I've gone from here is Ogden to play The Fort which is a great course, check out my review! :D When I play it I would be glad to talk about it or any other course I've played on the forums or in PMs.

B: My best friend is originally from Chicago so I know what you mean ;) I've known lots of midwest peeps over the years, always liked em and Southerners too. East Coast? :gross: jk kinda lulz

C: It's all good, I like driving and road trips :)

The threshold went from 200 uniques when business was booming to 250 at the time business was bearish. I was caught in between the 2. I sat in limbo, deservedly so.

totally, me too

Looking at these CZ's portfolio's, which we all can, they deserve Diamond. You've admitted not using Udisc. The main competitor to this very site. I use both at least (get a cellular telephone bro :p)

agreed. they're all great reviewers and i'm certain they'll get there. leave my flip phone out of it! :D

that said, it wasn't until recently that there were any "complaints" about not getting to diamond. granted, it also wasn't until recently that there were so many CZs simultaneously and for such long periods of time. but it also wasn't until recently that there was a squad of daily voters pushing the number of thumbs way beyond anything before seen here.

to my original point, it seems like once we passed the initial boom period there has been a pretty consistent length of time for the average reviewer to reach diamond. covid ushered in a new, interesting period for DGCR and now votes and reviews are way up. but uniques are still moving at the same old pace.

i don't mean to say that any of the CZs are b!tching all the time, annoying, or out of line to make comments about it. just making observations. i think the perception around reaching diamond has changed. a lot of the longer time users have seen over time how long it takes to reach diamond whereas the newer folks joined during a time when a few dozen people had already reached diamond and wellsbranch showed it was possible to do it in a couple years. it seems like there is a bit of an assumption now that diamond is almost automatic if you just write 100 reviews. history shows that was never the case.

did we actually disagreed on anything there?

oh dang! you're in Idaho Falls now. my sister just moved there and it's only a matter of time before i make it up for a visit. i'll definitely be checking in on your reviews and maybe picking your brain a bit before then.

Freeman is the best course in Idaho falls, pretty good course. If you're gonna be in IF you must travel to Pocatello (hour south) and play Sunrise Club and Bengal Ridge. All of the Pocatello courses are at least decent and worth stopping in. There's a private course in Sugar City (hour north) that's not listed on here by the owner's request but available on that other app. It's worth a stop too. I'd be happy to guide you on any of these courses.

The goalposts changed on Gold TR status as well...went from 75 uniques to 90. I got caught there. From my standpoint as a CZ (2 Carat club), if it happens for me to get Diamond TR, it happens. Really, I only started pushing in reviews of all the courses I've played for 3 years. I also review a TON of small courses in the vastness of the corn fields of Iowa. Not going to get the traffic. Got a couple of opportunities to hit a couple of top courses later this summer (if my knee comes back around). Will get more traffic then. So, from a CZ standpoint, if it happens, it happens, no real *****ing from here. (OK maybe a little, but I'm old, so that comes with the territory)

I'm in a similar situation (CZ, 1,500-plus thumbs up). My four most-recent reviews (two posted, two waiting to drop) are courses with fewer than 18 holes and a total of 2 reviews other than mine. Not getting much traffic, but I figure it's a service to the disc golf community and to this site.

many thanks! especially for the heads up about Sugar City, i definitely would have missed that. i'll be hitting you up once i have a plan. cheers!

Having exceeded 200 uniques, it seems like the flow of new uniques has REALLY slowed down for me. It's been 14 reviews since my last one (thank you mrstherembo). I have received only four new uniques in the last 31 reviews I've posted.

Obviously the solution is to travel to other parts of the country to play, and/or to play more overall Top Rated courses in order to attract new eyeballs.

...but that's not really practical.

And lest this whiney post suggest otherwise, I am grateful for EVERY SINGLE UPVOTE, and especially smile when I see any familiar name on one of my reviews.

But I wonder if this is just a sign of a site in decline...if it's largely the same set of "regulars" , whether they be posters, reviewers or voters. Maybe there's a large group of people reading reviews but not voting - just as there are a lot of people who read reviews and have no idea of the value in the forums, of that they even have inboxes for messages.

As much pleasure as I get from writing reviews, some days I wonder why bother. I'm at 334 reviews now, and have promised myself to at least continue to 350 - because that's a nice round number.

Not asking for anything - just wondering if others feel the same way.

I think I rushed to get Gold cause I knew it was attainable living so close to so many courses, but now that is long past and I've settled into what I know will be a very long wait for Diamond.

I definitely think because of the app-that-must-not-be-named there is a big decline in newer users (not sure, I only started reviewing in 2020). But there are so many new players that hopefully they find this site catch the bagging/reviewing/upvoting bug as I did. Just recently Nate32 and RodneyTravis are examples of that. There's definitely a lot of lurkers, but I think with some old names getting votes out (shyguy30 popped a few of mine again) and some new names (thanks mrsthrembo) the site is in a fine spot. The glory days may be gone, but it's a great place to get real reviews and ratings and I'm glad to add to that.

Plus you lot are alright for disc golf chatter, I guess.

mrsthrembo says "You're welcome!" and keep writing good reviews and if she finds them worthy she will grant you her unique. She isn't into it as much as I am, but she has seen me go through the cubic zirconia wait and knows that the struggle is real!

With a child already and more planned I'm betting it'll be the '30s before I see my Diamond, but I'm be happy to keep putting out reviews just the same. I'll keep going after the Diamond, too.
