DG on ESPN

I think an example that would better represent your case would be the on car cams. Those babies are wireless and actually function very well.

^^YES, that is a great point! They are good quality!

So one wireless, car-cam type camera on top of each basket. Camera crew on each tee pad, also with small, wireless cameras.

Remember that a lot of the cabling that is run is because the PGA events are broadcast live. I think even if disc golf gets on TV, a live broadcast is a ways off. Record the whole event, have the cameraman make notes re: good shots, close misses, aces, etc. so they can be featured. Commentary is done after the fact , and then the whole thing is edited and broadcast. Our timeslots may not be ideal (then again, what does the Outdoor Channel show in the afternoons? A hundred redundant hunting shows! Someone get them on the phone!).

ESPN would be nice, but I agree that we need to set our sights somewhere else (Versus, Outdoor Network, the Fox Sports regional channels, etc.) to begin with. And raise production values.

Granted, the shoddy attempts the PDGA has made so far with webcasting has been rather unimpressive, but with time that technology is likely to improve.
The PDGA has made no attempts at all, just an independent effort by discgolfplanet.tv headed by Duesler, who BTW is not PDGA Marketing Director this year but fulltime trying to make discgolfplanet.tv viable with at least eight events live online in 2011. The PDGA has only been one of several sponsors and provided a website outlet but hasn't yet made any directly funded efforts for live online coverage. It would seem the next step might be selecting a private course, possibly one at the IDGC, and spend the money to wire it so it's ready for coverage as a Championship venue. The Steady Ed course has the most photogenic angles of the three courses there when the water levels in the lake are suitable.

It doesn't have to be a top quality broadcast at the moment. This is a grassroots sport, and the fact that they have the capability to broadcast certain events is absolutely fantastic. Until ESPN or Fox sports comes along and starts to fit the bill on these broadcasts, I think that they should just keep doing what they are doing online. Perhaps start playing commercials during the broadcast. ...more than just PDGA, Innova, Discraft, etc...

An online broadcast has the ability to make more with commercials, when it's isolated amongst a specific demographic. (aka Disc Golfers) Because they know who will be watching, and it would make things more specific. Innova would probably pay more to be on that broadcast, but why isolate it to our manufacturers. How about seeing if Budweiser would sponsor a tournament? The 2011 USDGC Brought to you by Pepsi, Budweiser, and etrade! lol It is something to think about. Then contact our local TV stations to see about rebroadcasting the event.

Several others have made a go of web-casting events and others like CLASH and DiscGolfTV.com both made efforts on getting Disc Golf out there.

When watching Disc Golf video, the ones that have been shot with on-sight commentary, it sounds as if they're (the commentators) are actually getting bored with what they're doing. When watching one that were fully produced with commentary at a later date, it seems as if they don't understand the concept of laying down audio then you match the audio.

For me, and this is just a IMO: It's not that I don't mind seeing shots of the crowd. But I have a DVD, and I noticed that they would cut out some of the player shots. But had a ton of footage of people grabbing their bags and having the whole crowd walk towards the camera. Cut the walk off scenes, and spend more time on players. Save that for filler if you need more time, but don't edit out a players shot and/or round. They actually skipped an entire hole on the final round, and went straight to Climo putting.

That was just my opinion. Less walking scenes, more playing scenes.

Having edited or helped edit a few disc golf videos, "throwaway" scenes like players picking up their bags and walking back from their putt or tee shot are regularly needed to have enough video content to match the audio commentary. Many disc golf shots are typically faster (fewer seconds) than what commentators can say unless all you want to hear is "Great shot" or "Hit a tree."

I think Feldberg said it best when he said that DG wont be on ESPN until they start filming it better.

When they can get better shots of the flight of the disc, and the lines involved when you throw, it will make it more interesting to watch.

Get lcgm8 to film all the tournaments... his footage is the best I've ever seen.

I get that, and that's what I meant by filler. Yes it is necessary, but sometimes it feels like I ended watching more people walking than actual playing time. If it were me, I'd copy the audio giving me an audio track, that I can mix back in post edit. Doing that would allow me to insert the audio back in, as well as clean up any audio that might need trimming or boosting. (ummmms, uuuuhs, aaaaahs, coughs, etc) So you can edit your video, such as overlapping multiple angles from a drive to add time to a scene, and placing the commentary were you want it to go, as opposed to working with it where it currently is. ...if that makes sense. I see what I would do, but transposing it is a little tricky.

I do audio production for a living, I love this type of stuff! :)

Having watched a fair number of video of Disc Golf, I'd like to hear more of the chatter between players when walking the fairway and conversations between player and caddy for the players that have caddies.

I have volunteer a couple of times at the USDGC. A lot of the entertainment was conversations players had a comments they would make while waiting to tee off or in transition.

I run some radio stations in NE GA and love the production end the best. I've got two awesome production people that do a majority of the work now. Ian, on the forums, he used to work for me in Seneca and does great audio production as well.

Heck, we all live in SC and should start working on some projects together.

What the heck makes curling so damn interesting during the Olympics? I'm always watchin'.

If people can fall in love with that coverage, then disc golf at least deserves a shot!

Really? What stations? I work for Cumulus in Myrtle Beach. Absolutely we should! Dude, I've got Cool Edit 2.1 on my laptop, it's like playstation for me! LOL
We use Audition at the station.
Sucks that it's so far away!

Exactly what I was thinking.

I used Adobe Audition. It does everything that you need...I believe that Adobe bought out Cool Edit. I've got Adobe Audition at home as well.

I was talking with Strange Disc Sports on Sunday and offered to produce the sound for his videos and then let him edit the footage to fit the audio...that's the easiest way to produce a nice piece.

The key is to not use crap mics. I think you don't get to hear what is going on because they use those stupid clip on junk ass mics where all you hear is the wind.

I do audio work as a hobby and it drives me crazy to hear junk audio.

Junk video is also a pet peeve but I don't have the pc power to edit HD so I do very little meddling with it.

Another thing with audio that bothers me is getting to close or not adjusting the levels properly. Hearing over-modulated audio drives me nuts.

Not to derail the technical discussion too far, just a reminder that there are lots of places across the country where DG is on TV, regularly. From tiny towns up in Maine, to a ten-county area of Michigan, to the metropolis that is Charlotte, NC, Disc Golf Live video magazine brings a slice of DG to a wider audience than ever before. But there are many more stations and it usually takes a local resident to facilitate broadcasts, which is how you may be able to help. (And for those of you who produce videos, we're always looking to feature tasty contributions.) Here's more...

The latest episode of Disc Golf Live video magazine can be found online here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PHqjEsBFdgw
(Part 1: Presidents Cup finals, Vibram Open Great Upshots, Tali Open finals)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QGsW_wUVj4A
(Part 2: Am Nationals finals, Vibram Open Hot Putts, Clash DVD's Collegiate Championships)

Thanks to the PDGA, Innova, and Discraft for supporting the efforts of Disc Golf Live to bring DG to a broader audience than ever before. And thanks also to Billy Crump, Mike Bozik, Steve Dodge, and the Scandinavian video mafia for sharing their video productions.

We're posting our episodes online now and hope you established disc golfers enjoy the show. But our real goal is bringing DG to TV communities large and small, all across the country. If you have a public or community access station in town, then you can probably see DG on TV to your area. We provide our show at no cost and all it usually takes is a little local legwork to get broadcasts arranged.

Take care,

Joe

Oh man...you ain't lying!! Every year our neighbor has us attend her daughter's dance show. The dancing is awesome and the girls range from 6 to 20 (of course we like the senior division the best :p ). But the DJ, OY VEY the DJ can't stop distorting music like it was his business. It makes me want to cry. Here you are watching some beautiful women dance some amazing dance and your ears are screaming in agony.

I mix music for a couple of dance studios on the side for extra money. It drives me crazy when they crank the music up so load that it distorts. I've thought about saying something but I think i'd get talked into running the board for their recitals...and I don't want anymore on my plate.
