Google Earth has a built in ruler feature that is pretty accurate. I've tested it against the holes at my course and its within 10 ft of the "actual" distance.
As for the par, a par 3 would suffice, unless there is a really long hole there.
I, personally, think that forced throws are good for beginners. If they learn how to throw when they can only throw a hyzer, anhyzer, etc, then they could be prepared for other courses. Having past experience being forced to throw a particular shot will help their decision making.
