Excellent park style course, makes perfect pit stop for road trip 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 29, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Tees are great, grippy, big enough, and in amazing condition.
-Tee signs are also nice, they don't need to be super detailed because most holes are self explanatory, and so, the signs aren't super detailed. That's fine with me
-This is a Park course, so the fairways are really nicely mowed grass
-There are small rolling hills around this course and whenever given the chance a hole will play up/down one, or there will be a basket placed right on the edge.
-The most interesting obstacle out here is the wind. It swirls viciously by the freeway with all the cars, but also comes off the lake very strongly. I'm not a stranger to playing in the wind, but out here it was switches direction constantly which makes for a cool (or frustrating) challenge
-For a Park course, the trees are used very well, blue heron is mostly open, but the disc golf course uses up all of the space with trees. I am particularly fond of this style of course, with impeccable fairways and massive trees, but almost no underbrush, it is just relaxing.
-The course is relatively easy to navigate and has a good flow to it, you don't get too close to any of the playground areas or what not. The only issue is there is a longish walk from 6 to 7 that would be super confusing without a map, or seeing the hole as you drive in.
-The openness of the course allows for a wide variety of shots, while still allowing for punishment if you miss a little. This is a great course for trying out some new discs to see how they fly, because you'll likely be able to see a full flight.
-This is a rec course (see cons for more on this) and can be boring. But, that's what makes this place a great road trip stop. It is maybe 4 minutes off the freeway, it is a short play, that is still pretty fun, and is in Moses lake which is sorta the middle of nowhere, so you'd probably be getting bored of driving (I know I was).

Cons:

-Baskets are a little old, they are rusty DISCatchers that get the job done, but threaten to spit through or let a good putt drop out.
-This is a short rec course, and yes, it was very fun to play, but it isn't climbing up any leaderboards in a hurry. This course can be introduced to new players without scaring them away, and it can be fun for intermediate players and above, but at the end of the day, it would get a little boring. I wouldn't really want to play this course over and over again.
-This is undoubtably an after thought, I don't think that the parks and rec people established this park to be a DGC, in fact they probably got a letter from someone about it. Because of this, there could be a lot of people just sitting around having a picnic or whatever, oblivious to the fact that they're in a disc golf course. I did not play this course on a busy day, especially considering the immense size of the parking lot. If that parking lot gets full, then there was practically no one there when I played.

Other Thoughts:

If you're in the area, come check out this course. I wouldn't drive all the way out just for this one, but definitely hit it if you're on a road trip or something.

Park First, DG Course Last 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 18, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Some holes are quite fun, but none are very challenging. A nice rest stop spot, and it has baskets. The park was immaculate, pads, signs, and baskets all in superb shape. Locals seem friendly.

Cons:

The wind today was extreme, being by the water. The park was FILLED with families having picnics and relaxing. Mysteriously there are picnic benches right in the fairways of some holes. This is no place for a DG course.

Other Thoughts:

We had to wait a VERY long time on many occasions for people to clear the way. We never got the chance to really open up for fear of hitting people.
Putting baskets into this park was just a bad idea. There is unused space just north of the park that would have made more sense. This is not a DG course, this is a park.

Very well maintained park and the baskets are top notch. The hole locations aren't difficult to locate and the course is easy to follow. Very well worth the time..

Cons:

The wind can really kick up so you might need to use a heavier disc or re-think your approach.

Pros:

Wide open.
Easy to navigate.
New restroom off of hole 6.

Cons:

Lots of people like to move picnic tables into the middle of the fairways.
caution on hole 8 if the wind is in the wrong direction you may lose a disc on the freeway.

Other Thoughts:

Playing in the early AM is ideal as most people will start to show up after noon.

Blue Heron Park 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 25, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Blue Heron Park in Moses Lake is located on the eastside of Washington State. This nine hole course is right off Interstate 90 on the way to Spokane. Because of its proximity to the highway, it makes for the perfect stop to stretch the legs, use the restroom, and even grab a snow cone (shaved ice shop onsite) on warm sunny days.

The course plays in a grassy multi-use park with some elevation and a variety of trees spread throughout the area. Blue Heron Park has a combination of long and short holes ranging anywhere from 215-480 feet and includes eight Par 3's with one Par 4 making Par for the course 28. Elevation is present on holes three through five with water really only coming in to play on hole four. The kiosk has some helpful information and navigation/flow is not an issue. The cement tee pads and DISCatchers are in great shape and a nice touch, adding some character to this fairly average nine hole course.

Favorite Hole(s): Hole #3 and Hole #5

Cons:

Wind can play a HUGE factor, as the day I was there the wind was over 55 mph, making my round almost unbearable! The courses SSA changes dramatically depending on the weather conditions so just be prepared.

Also, the tree line on hole five can eat discs so beware. When I played on an extremely windy day my disc carried into them and didn't come down for quite some time. However, they are easily avoidable if worried, just stay left!

Last, as others mentioned, the amount non-disc golfers on the course can make it rather difficult to get a full round in on nice days. Make sure you get to the course early or closer to sundown to avoid these issues. I was there on a Friday at 10:30 in the morning and had no problem.

Least Memorable Hole(s): Hole #6

Other Thoughts:

Blue Heron Park in Moses Lake is a wonderful place to bring the family and have a picnic. There is a large playground, a boat launch and plenty of room to run around and be free. The course seemed very safe and was a quick play. The hole variation allowed for some ace runs and some more strategic shots with nice distance. If you are ever traveling across the state of Washington this course is a must!

Disc Stop Pit Stop 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 8, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Close the highway
- Wide open (other then people)
- The layout has a good rhythm. Trees are in good places and hole locations give just enough of a challenge for a small course.

Cons:

- Only 9 holes ;-(
- It is very easy to miss hole the short hole by the water. Hole 4?
- Not much elevation change
- Lots of trash coming off the highway
- Bathrooms closed possibly because of winter

Other Thoughts:

- Going west on I-90 get off at exit 175 not 174.
- Watch out for dogs and people.

Blue Heron Park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 1, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Very nice 9 hole course in a convenient little park along the side of I-90 next to the lake. Well maintained with a well designed layout and easy to move from hole to hole. All grass so a very comfortable game. RV park, convenient store close by if your traveling.

Cons:

Multi-use park can be busy in the summer months with other activities. Wind can be BRUTAL as the area surrounding is pretty much FLAT.

Other Thoughts:

Great course to stop at and stretch the legs if your coming from or going to Seattle

Watch out for others! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 16, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The park itself is very well kept, and for the size of the park, there are some very nice, long holes with a mixture of shorter ones. You could play here barefoot and you won't have a problem. The lake is very pretty especially with the sun beading off of it; good scenery.

Cons:

This park get extremely busy with other people playing in the park or having a picnic or whatever, and there are a lot of outdoor parties that make this course almost unplayable during the summer unless you go early in the morning.

Other Thoughts:

Pretty decent little park just off of the freeway on interstate 90, in fact that's how I found the course, I was driving towards Spokane when I saw baskets and pulled over to play a couple rounds. Family friendly but still a decent challenge on some holes. Pack some water when you go!

*****UPDATE*****

Now with concrete tee pads and signs!

Simple, but fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 21, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Beautiful park, course clearly marked, nice tee boxes, a couple fun holes, but very straightforward. Along Moses Lake, so nice scenery at times. Kind of a no-brainer course, but still fun.

Cons:

A bit simple and only 9 holes. Bathrooms are gross!

Other Thoughts:

Honestly, this is a fun course...nothing to write home about, but like another reviewer stated, great pit stop along I-90. If heading across I-90 going either way, it is definately worth bringing your discs and spending an hour. Kids can play at the park.

Washington State's Official Disc Golf Rest Area! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 30, 2008 Played the course:never

Pros:

It's a lovely green park. The tee pads are great. You could play this course bare footed. It's challenging enough to be fun but open and short enough for novices and beginners. New disc catcher baskets. There's a map at hole # 1. Swim in the lake at the completion of your round. There's very little chance of losing any plastic.

Cons:

You're probably going to be throwing through the other park users. Be courteous and patient. I was lucky enough to play early one morning before the crowds gathered. Eastern Washington winds can be brutal.

Other Thoughts:

It's right off the freeway and makes for the perfect rest stop for any disc golfer driving across Washington. Don't drive by without stopping and checking it out. But on the other hand, I wouldn't advise driving a hundred miles to play the course.

Nice little break during a drive. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 23, 2008 Played the course:never

Pros:

Considering the lack of any other courses anywhere near here, this isn't a bad start. The teepads are nice, the holes vary in length between 215 and 480 feet (though most are in the 200s) and the park is well kept up. The signage is good for the most part, and there is a map of the course near the parking lot by the first tee.

Cons:

It would be nice to have something at the hole which directed you to the next tee. Also, the walk between 1-6 and 7-9 takes you from one section of the park to another, although it really isn't very long.

Other Thoughts:

We played this course on our way from Tacoma to the Spokane area on Friday, May 23rd, and again on the way home, Monday, Memorial Day, May 26th. The two rounds were very different. On Friday, around 1:30 in the afternoon, the winds were whipping. When we started I would guess 20-25 with gusts near 35, and by the time we finished I would say 40-45 with gusts of at least 55-60. It was the most brutal wind I have ever played in. My wife quit playing after 3 holes out of frustration, but I toughed it out. There were times when I wasn't sure what I needed to to to get through the wind, but somehow, I managed. On the way back through, there was almost no wind at all, though we had to play around several groups of Memorial Day picnickers. Considering how new this course appears to be, I was pleasantly surprised to see 8 other golfers, in 4 separate groups, playing rounds of golf. I probably wouldn't go out of my way to play this course, but as a quick stop during a boring drive, it makes a nice break.

Fun recreational course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 23, 2008 Played the course:never

Pros:

Good use of trees and park layout. Most of the holes are signed.

Cons:

Grass teepads, wind.

Other Thoughts:

My wife and I visited this park from out of the area this weekend. I'm a little more advanced, and she only plays when I drag her out. Many of the holes are short, but with the layout and obstacles, I had fun too. There is one hole close to 400, another around 480, but the rest are mostly 300ish or lest. All in all, though, it's a fun recreational course.
