Great Job! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 15, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Free to park/ play
challenging course (mostly wooded) that doesn't get boring no matter how many times played.
nice baskets/ tees
well detailed signs
well maintained course.

Cons:

some fairways are placed colse to one another, so you do have to look out for other groups.
good deal of thorns in the wooded areas
possible to lose a disc on a few holes

Other Thoughts:

From reading past reviews, I can see that the people who work on this course have done a great job fixing many complaints. Signage is up and gives you a sense of where to play.

Throwing on the Cape 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 5, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Nice cobblestone tee pads
Great baskets
Clean shots off the tee on most holes
Fair looks at the baskets on the greens
Balanced risk reward style of play/course
Easy walking
Short course that is able to challenge your game
Map at kiosk
Lots of parking
Port o pot
Lots of trash cans around the course
Plenty of seating

Cons:

Lack of tee signs with any info on the holes
Only a few navigation arrows, definitely could use some help here.
Little confusing on what tee pads to play on a few holes.
Lots of benches, tables, and signs are damaged
Some gnarly rough off the fairways
Was warned by many local players to beware of vagrants and keep an eye on your stuff

Other Thoughts:

Burgess is a great little course with a bunch of fun shots. I had a great day playing here and would definitely return for another crack at it. Most of your tee shots will have some options and clean, fair looks at the pin. You will need to gauge your game and decide if you should try to park or place your drives. The course sprinkles in a few open ceiling holes, but no long bomber shots here on the Cape. Once you know the course layout, it's easy walking and navigation issues subside. The place could use a little help in this department, especially considering the amount of vacation players that frequent the course. Going into Burgess, I had been warned to be mindful of my belongings and aware of shady folks wondering the course. These warnings were backed up by a group of local players I ran into starting my second round. There was a bunch of area golfers playing that day, so the vibe around the course was positive, friendly and cool. No issues over the course of three rounds. If you are on the Cape definitely check this one out. I came an hour an a half to check this one off my list. That's about the distance I'd say is fair to travel for this one. If you have plans to play on Martha's Vineyard and/or Nantucket, hit this one up on your way to or back from your ferry.

Fun Technical Wooded Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 12, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Free to Play
Open Year Round
Scenic Wooded Views & Lake Backdrop
Concrete or Stone Teepads
Technical Shots Required
Good Mix of L/R Drives
Putter and Mid Friendly!

Cons:

Pretty Short Course
Only 1 425'+ Hole
Signs!??!
Gets Crowded April-October
Walking to Next Tee can be Dangerous

Other Thoughts:

Burgess Park is a fun Par 3 course on Cape Cod that requires precise drives, but is fair, being a short course.

The Hole Info is not updated; many holes have been lengthened, teepads changed, and new holes have been added.

Mostly wooded holes (14) and a good mix of Hyzer/Straight/Anhyzer drives (7/4/7).

The flow of the holes is Great (RHBH Perspective)

1-5 (<275') High Ceiling Mostly Open Drives. Can all be Birdied with a Clean Drive
6 Slight Downhill Heavily Wooded Tunnel Shot
7 Up and Down Heavily Wooded Hyzer
8 Downhill Blind Wooded Anhyzer Slightly Elevated Tee
9 Uphill Ace Run
10 Most Challenging Hole: Extremely Wooded Hyzer w/ Mando and OB
11 & 12 Open Field Shots
13 Downhill Blind Anhyzer with Strategically Placed Tree off the Drive
14-17 Challenging Mix of Wooded Shots
18 Open Field Shot with Hidden Wooded Basket to the Right

There is practically no Hole Signage and is incorrect if existent. Signs to next tee are present, but some holes require backtracking the fairway or walking behind other baskets. Being the only course on Cape Cod, it can get crowded in the afternoon or during the summer.

This course doesn't offer many birdies if your drive isn't clean. Very Midrange and Putter friendly coirse. You wont need anything more than a fairway driver save for a couple holes.

Trees are not forgiving, but since most holes are under 325', some memorable upshots can be had. I always remember my amazing Pars and Bogey Saves.

Not too many bland holes
Especially memorable are 6,7,8,12,13, & 16.

Overall Burgess Park is a great short course in need of a little facelift. The local club has done a great job the past 2 years lengthening the course, installing teepads, and maintenance, the course looks great. With good hole signage and better walkways, this course would be a 4+

technical, fair, but navigation tough 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 3, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course is built at a public park with holes weaving through the woods adjacent to a large lake. There is a good mix of lefty and righty friendly lines throughout the course which is a quality of courses that I appreciate from course designers since it is sometimes overlooked. Holes were strategically designed to use many oak and pine trees as obstacles. Though the course is mostly technical, there are a couple of holes both in and out of the woods that gives an opportunity for the distance thrower to open up.

Cons:

Tee signs are in need of upgrade or replacement. Where they were present, they were not very clear, and sending someone down the fairway was necessary to clarify where we were throwing to. Hole 10 in particular - it had a tee sign, but described a much shorter hole than we appeared to be playing on. Navigation was difficult and zig-zagged a bit too much, especially after hole 12. Tee signs would go a long way to clearing up which tee pad corresponds to which basket.

Other Thoughts:

Memorable holes include 8 which throws downhill towards a slightly elevated basket, hole 12 which comes back across an open field and into a patch of guardian trees, and hole 13 which has a perfectly placed dead pine tree in the fairway to challenge players. Overall, the course was very fun and pretty, and could just use a little TLC.

Missing the forest for the beach 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 15, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

As Cape Cod's only course, people will battle horrific traffic and spend thousands of dollars per week to rent small cottages just to be near this course (or maybe it's the beaches; but who is to say).

All but two of the holes are wooded. When I looked at the distances of the holes online, I thought it would be a pitch and putt. Not quite. There are definitely birdies to be had, but there are a double bogeys to be had as well. The fairways tend to have trees interspersed, so you have to be careful about the gaps you're trying to hit.

The blue tees are all pavers except for one or two. I liked them. The course is mostly flat, but three or four of the holes have some nice elevation changes that complicate your shot selection in a good way.

Navigation isn't bad. There are next tee signs on every hole.

The scenery is pleasant. The back half of the course overlooks a nice pond. It might not be beginner friendly, but there could have been some terrific holes along the banks.

Cons:

The tee signs are either non-existent or not very useful (they are handmade). The first time through you don't always know where the basket is. In addition, in a couple places the holes are so close that you could easily play to the wrong basket. On hole 10, I accidentally threw to basket 3, and you could also inadvertently throw to hole 17. In general, the holes are on top of each other. It didn't feel unsafe, but you could easily end up on the wrong fairway with a subpar throw.

There are three sets of "tees" on each hole, which is kind of overkill. The red tees are absurdly short, but I suppose if you are introducing someone to the game, a 50-foot drive may keep them from getting discouraged. The red and white tees are just stakes in the ground.

A few of the holes don't seem like they have realistic lines to the basket. None are horribly unfair, but they could use a couple fewer trees.

Holes 11 and 18 have intersecting fairways, which really isn't necessary since they could switch tee pads and still be pretty similar holes. You really don't see this very often, and for good reason.

There were a lot of brambles off the fairways. The rough isn't thick, but you can count on getting caught in something thorny once or twice.

In general, the design here left something to be desired. There are lots of holes with a clear fairway for maybe 150-200 feet, and then you're just hoping you make it through the clump of trees.

Other Thoughts:

My 100th course!

If you're on the Cape, this is your only option, but it's worthwhile. And on this March afternoon while the central Massachusetts courses were still under a foot of snow, there was no snow here. It was nice to feel human again and ditch the boots.

New Layout rocks 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 13, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

New tee pads, new layouts, new signs. Lots of energy going into course improvement. Super friendly locals, and pretty views. Challenging lines make you pay if you get a bad kick. Great DGA baskets. I reall enjoyed 7,8, 16, 10.

Cons:

Tough to read tee box signage. Lack of par 4 or fives. But it isn't even a fair criticism, based on land they had to work with. New lay out could use a little more pruning of dead trees on 10, 17.

Other Thoughts:

This course played better than the older reviews would lead you to believe. It is the home of a burgeoning disc golf community and is worth checking out.

Summertime Bliss 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 12, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This is a great course for mixed company. I brought my wife and my sisters-in-law to enjoy time together in the wooded setting. The shots are wonderfully technical, but the best part is the wooded setting for a hot day on the Cape (when many would rather be cutting the heat out on the beach so the course was accessible (one group every three baskets, more or less)). Many hippie-era late baby-boomers the first time I played the course - many with tie-died shirts. That was lovely.

Cons:

I'm easy. There were no cons what-so-ever. Perhaps the basket location on 18 but we just used the practice basket in the middle of the field as an alternate. Issue solved.

Other Thoughts:

Traffic can be very busy as you travel to the more secluded setting in which the course is laid out. Don't make any wrong turns as coming back on the main roads from a side street might take a while. Give yourself some extra time before and after the round to schedule other activities.

Review from a Beginner 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 21, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

It's a beautiful course, especially the back 9.
Basket placements on the front 9 allow you to utilize many different throwing styles to get to where you want to be.

Cons:

A ridiculous amount of trees. Some holes have walls of trees directly in front of the tee, forcing you to throw away from the basket. This is particularly problematic on hole 6. Also, there's a plethora of briers at Burgess. Having only played for two years, I often find myself wading through thick brier patches looking for my discs.

Other Thoughts:

The group that does the upkeep of the course generally does a good job. I just wish they would refrain from moving baskets to areas where a 3 isn't feasible (hole 6) and do more brier and brush removal,

Short and Sweet 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 23, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a course to get your fairway drivers working as it plays pretty short, through the woods, and adds a few field shots for good measure. You will have a variety of shots going every which way with slight elevation on some holes. It's very wooded and technical with two tee pads per hole. The shorts are pretty easy and the longs will provide a fair challenge for intermediates, yet advanced players will find this a "pitch and putt" course. I found some of the hole design to be creative and fun for the limited space provided.

It's all par 3, but you will be kicking yourself if you don't get your 2's on many holes.

Cons:

The crowds. I stood on #18 tee and counted 30 people (within eyesight) at 2:00 on a winter weekday (it was actually sunny and about 45 degrees - a very nice winter day in MA). I have been told that this course easily can get crowded, so it's recommended to get here early.
People on a course don't bother me, but they do when they cut in front of you -as one group continually did - skipping here and there, wherever they saw an empty hole. A second group came out of nowhere and cut in front of me, too.

Other Thoughts:

With such a lack of courses in southern MA, it's no wonder why this is so popular. I hear that Cape Cod is relatively snow-free when other places (like Borderland) have snow on the ground - making it a winter destination.

I found the tees fairly well marked - contrary to what some reviewers have said. Sometimes it is a little difficult to find the next tee (going from #3 to #4 - go 7:00 from #3 basket)

Disc Golfin On The Cape Cod! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 2, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Burgess Park is what I've figured out to be a pretty typical New England style course. That is one which plays primarily through a forested area with some minor elevation changes. Burgess has natural pads and decent baskets with the numbers on top. #'s 2,3 and 4? had different teepads. I got a little confused with the navigation at times stumbling about. Some more next tee signs could have helped my experience out here. There are some nice ACE opportunities. Mostly this is a recreational course. It's not going to challenge advanced players. I thought # 9 was kind of a strange hole standing out in the middle of a field by itself about 325'??? And is there another basket here for another # 9. I never found the # 10 pad. Also are there two baskets for # 13?

# 14 was a very pretty fairway. # 13 and # 14 both have new DGA baskets with the red numbers on top. There is a nice view of the lake from just behind # 14 pad.

Cons:

The natural teepads could be improved. If not concrete, how about building blocks inside a wooden frame. I think they work very well. Navigation was fairly difficult for me here. Some next tee arrows or maybe some little metal signs hanging from the baskets rungs would help. Anything to help us first time players would be appreciated.

I never found # 18.

Other Thoughts:

The course is crammed in this space pretty tightly at times. I'm sure the locals know the route. This would be one of those courses where you play it twice or with a guide and you would know it well. There are some fun throws here and the closest course from here that's not on an island is 47 miles away, so this might be your course choice today.

Burgess 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jan 29, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course is beautiful in the summertime. It is on a pond which is a great place to swim in the summer or skate in the winter. There are trash cans on most every hole. Terrain has moderate elevation changes and hole design is challenging with trees.Technical shots are required. Much redesign has happened in the past two years so I am updating my review

Cons:

Tee signs have all been redone but some kids keep pulling them out of the ground and trashing them. All holes now have a paver stone tee pad, very nice. While still a relatively short overall course length, the lengthening of holes and expansion continues with the support of the Cape Cod Disc Golf Club and its members.

Other Thoughts:

A great place to practice and play, especially since this is the only course on Cape. Burgess, you have come a long way baby...Thank you to all the members of Cape Cod Disc Golf Club for caring and improving this park!!

Much Improved 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 25, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

18 holes with baskets in okay condition. Tees are either natural for the red tees or pavers in the blue. A few holes offer alternate tees on a select few holes. A few open holes mix well with tight fairways that you don't want to miss, because you will be rightly punished. Fairways well manicured and trash cans spread out throughout course. Next tee markers on signs near baskets, but high up on trees.

Cons:

These baskets are older and do like to spit out some putts even though they come in perfect or strong side. Now the course just got approval for new baskets, and when they do get installed that should bolster the rating here. As I mentioned, drives that are slightly off are punished and more times than not you cannot scramble for par off a bad drive, can go pro/con depending on the player. Alternate tee pads are dirt, and don't allow for a nice run-up, unlike the pavers.

Other Thoughts:

While in itself is not a destination course, if you live on the Cape or just off the canal, or if visiting in the area, it is worth your while to come and throw a round here. The variety of holes and lengths is varying enough to not make it feel repetitive, and the alternate pads allow for newbies and experienced to play and be challenged at the same time. It was a thrill to return here after nearly five years to this course on the Cape and see all the changes the local club had made, and the hard work they did paid off great dividends.

Pros:

-decent baskets

-not too many people in the way (i.e. dog walkers etc...)
-location (the only course on the cape? i think so)

Cons:

-confusing if there is no one to ask where the next hole is
-can be trashy- literally with trash, and also with some "vibey" attitudes
-a lot of trees

Other Thoughts:

i play this course typically on a lunch break if i'm working nearby. i really enjoy giving my champion leopard a run for its money (seeing how it fares after hitting a million trees) and when you hit the holes it's pretty rewarding. the last time i played (late july '10) there were multiple tee pads for each basket- but they weren't easily distinguishable. usually you get to one and think "THIS IS THE PRO TEE" or "THIS IS THE AM TEE." but these were at times just ten feet apart... i tried to stick to a single course layout, but i may have been combining two courses (a new and an old layout?) on some holes. a can of spray paint would go a long way if someone thought to mark each type with different colors. when i was there, i think there was a blue and an unmarked. but the blue was sometimes worn out and the unmarked was, well, unmarked. some had newer looking trash cans- which needed to be emptied. still a good course though- loved the wide open shots after all the tight ones.

-New Modified and Leveled Tee Boxes with Gravel/Stone.
-New Tee Signs which are custom handmade.
-A few holes have been lengthened/extended which -includes 3,5,11, and 14.
-New up and down hill pathway trails to the 10th and 12th tee.
-The back 9 offers longer par 3's with wider fairways with some elevation change.

Cons:

Too Many Trees
-More Course Maintenance such as dead debris removal, removal of dead branches for safety reasons.
Clean up some of the roughs.
-The club got permit form the down the burn dead debris this winter.

Other Thoughts:

A lot of major work has been done to the course by the Cape Cod Disc Club over the past six months. The course recently just held it's first PDGA tournament. The event was such a huge success that this tournament will be held next year. This PDGA will be held again next for Summer of 2012.

This course allows you to work on your short game, because there are a lot of narrow fairways, and you might hit a few trees if your not use to a short wooded narrow course. On some holes for more experienced players all you need to do is pull out your putter. The front 9 offers many birdie opportunities. This offers short par 3's which are getting more technical with new improvements and will continue to get more technical. The narrow tight fairways make up for the lack of distance. Hole 11 is Downhill right which is tough to birdie. This can be a nightmare hole for some players on their bad day. Play here, this course is improving more and more. The guys are slowly but surely lengthening the course.

The course is fun and you can play about 3 rounds in a visit pretty easily. There are plenty of birdie opportunities. While the course is short, the small skinny trees make it difficult to make it to the hole in one shot sometimes.

Cons:

I grew up on cape cod and I am ashamed at how trashy this park is. I regularly run into people smoking butts and throwing them right on the ground when they are done. Short, wooded, and fun. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 1, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

I'd say this is a very fun course to play. Its short, which means there are lots of opportunities for 2s, and everything else should be a 3. Three tees on each hole. The course has good flow except for a couple in the middle. All but 4 are in the woods, and all of the holes have a clear way of getting through the trees. Didn't seem to interfere with anything else in the park. Had a practice basket and I didn't notice any litter on the ground.

Cons:

The tee pads weren't always easy to find, they were just marked with wooden posts in the ground. They were also all dirt, which would only be a problem if it rains because there is no real reason to do a run up on any of the holes. I remember 2 of the fairways being close to each other, and had trouble deciding which basket to throw at. Wasn't a huge deal because the holes are so short. I didn't see any bathrooms or water fountains.

Other Thoughts:

Super short holes, but if you only bring a putter it makes for a fun game.

The red tees were a bit strange, some of them were ~30 ft from the basket.

My girlfriend loved being able to get 2s on most of the holes because they were inside her range. We ended up having a close game because of it.

If you're visiting the cape, this is your only choice. There is another course on Martha's Vineyard, but I didn't get to check that one out.

Overall a good place to bring the whole family, or if you're in the area. Probably not a place you'd want to drive too far out of the way for.
