Strange 9 holes 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 26, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Use of terrain and wooded areas (See also cons)
-Good tee signage
-Mix of open / tunnel shots
-Lines for most are OK
-Play around other park activities

Cons:

-#3 tees right over #2 basket
-#5 plays over the road
-Older baskets, tough to locate
-Map would have been helpful, especially to find tee 2 and 7
-More space to utilize, 18 holes possible, a wrap back toward the parking lot would be nice
-Natural tees, a few old tee signs remain, in differing spots
-No benches / trashcans
-1/8 mile walk back to the parking area after basket 9 (part of the trek back going through the #5 fairway)

Other Thoughts:

Corydon Lake Country Park DGC plays in the above named park on the east side of Cordon, IA. An older 9 hole that has some updated tee signage (I thought recently, but the dated pics show them in 2012). The course plays in the center section of the east side of the park with only hole 9 really having the lake in play (although a really errant throw on 5 could go that way). What is here makes good use of terrain, especially on 1-5 and then more wooded holes for 6-8. #9 is sandwiched between trees on the left and lake on the right. There is more space, especially where the 6-9 holes run, that would have lent to more. There are some dangers early with #3 teeing over the #2 basket and #5 teeing over the road. A reconfigure adding holes to the wooded area, especially if there could be more of a loop would add, as would the standard concrete pads and benches/trashcans. It was a quick play, so if you need a quick 9, are in the area, it would be OK. I might play again, if in the area.

Beautiful Setting for this nice little course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 2, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Plays in a beautiful state park
-Separate, but not 100%, from park activities.*
-Plays off into the woods, with varying terrain.
-Has a good variety and mix up of long/short distances
-A few quasi risk/reward type holes that require you to throw into a cluster of trees. (Nothing an approach couldn't save you from, but if you can manage a good shot, you could be sitting pretty)

-a few holes are more open than others. You will throw down some tighter lines on the back half of this course
-Signs, with maps and distances*
-Felt like a hike that goes through the woods.
-Great finishing hole, with an ace run that plays alongside the lake! (Parallel Water Hazard)

Cons:

- The course was separate from the activities, but it's a park where you could still run into pedestrian activity
-Signs* Distances on sign did not match the basket location. (Perhaps they are in the process of moving the baskets)
-Baskets are old and weathered and hard to find among the trees
-Signs* Could use a Next direction arrow
-Hole 9 ends a long way from the parking

Other Thoughts:

For starters, this is a course I wish was closer! It took me back to days of camping in Iowa in my youth! Running down trails and being near these small Iowa lakes! The course is actually well laid out, but your first time may have you turned around. Your lines will weave through some trees, and will get tighter along the way. You'll want to watch that canopy, for low hanging branches.

Here's where my frustration sat in. I had to reflect, because the course is a nice course. It does have it's first timer frustrations. 3 to be exact. I spent a lot of time looking for baskets and next holes. (In my defense, I was racing daylight) The weathered baskets can make it hard to find among the trees. This problem is amplified, when the sign says the basket is 257 feet out. ...but the basket has been moved to a location 350ft+ and hidden among trees. ...and the baskets are dark grey to black. I also spent along time looking for #2's teepad.

These however are remedied, after the first time you play here. It's easy to remember for follow up visits. Perhaps the course is getting updated. No complaints about the new pin locations, I just wished I knew where to look. Would have saved me some time. I wanted to loop this course twice, but I barely made it out with little light. It's to far off the beaten path for me to make a return trip. But Its the kind of course I wish was near me. If I lived in Centerville or Chariton, I'd make a trip over to play here. I'll bet Glow Rounds here are a blast!!

Southern Beaut 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 14, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

We have worked hard in recent years to clean up this course and create some different looks. A couple years ago new signs were installed on the entire course, and a few of the pad locations were changed to offer a more diverse layout. This park is quiet and beautiful, like most parks even more so in the fall. The baskets are in great shape and overhanging tree branches that were encroaching on the fairways have been trimmed back. This course has a fun technical challenge to it but is very friendly for introducing beginners or playing a short round.

Cons:

The Parks Dept. doesn't have the finances to mow the entire course and as a result when playing in the summer you can find a few fairways with more tall grass then desired. Some people would consider natural pads a con, personally I do not, and the distance does not require them.

Other Thoughts:

Sometime in the not so distant future alternate pad locations will be installed.

Beautiful but needs some LOVE 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 5, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course is located within the park and the setting is absolutely beautiful. So for starters the course has a positive going for it just because its location.

- Good hole layout variety with 3 straight / 3 straight with water / 2 left / 1 right. Although the length of the course is a little short, this variety offsets that and it is still fun to play.
- Great hole type variety 3 average open / 3 woodsy / 2 corridor / 1 pinball. I would consider this a "technical" course. The longest hole is 336'. It's the trees that will kill you.
- Tee signs that were present were average. They indicated next tee box which was helpful. See photos.
- Course terrain adds a very nice aspect to the course. See posted photos for variety. The hilly setting provides for nice hole variety which compensates for the shorter length of the course.
- Very peaceful place to play if you like backwoods secluded type courses where you can breeze through or take as much time as you want. Nobody else playing during my round.

Cons:

- The course appears to be part of regular park maintenance, but it still needs work on several holes.
- Tee signs and tee boxes are needed for holes 2 and 3.
- low lying branches on some holes are a nuisance and should be cleared.
- Some type of tee pads need to be installed. The lack of tee pads has created unlevel footing areas to throw from.
- No course map

Other Thoughts:

- You need to turn right just before the sign in the posted pics and the bridge over the creek.
- There was a playground at the parking area that was old but well kept. There is also camping nearby with clean campsites should you decide to take the family.
- With a little more care this could actually be a very good or excellent course - especially since it is only 9 holes. My guess is that this course rarely gets played - it's in the middle of nowhere, and that's precisely why I went to check it out. See also my detailed course review in the "links".
