Nary a finer area niner. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 14, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Community Park DGC in Troy is a short/medium length 9 hole course in a well-maintained city park. Posted pars are very generous, I believe each one was 4 or 5. If you are REC or above, play each hole as a par 3, and you will have a nice challenging round. Hole 6 is a bit long at 420' with trees in play, I could see that being an am par 4, but the rest are realistically par 3's. I do appreciate the course having 300' par 5's, because for a beginner/younger player, the pars are just about right, and I am always an advocate of courses for everyone. A first or second timer seeing a 420' par 3 in a city park setting could get discouraged. I do think this the only course I've ever gotten 4 'eagles' in a row.

PROS: .

>Decent variety in length, lines needed, and tree cover, for a 9 hole course.
>Nice park setting (my personal favorite).
>Heated bathroom year-round--between holes 4 and 5.
>Pre-COVID, they did have some night rounds here, there are still places on the baskets for the lights.

Cons:

>Baskets are aging single-chain Mach-??'s (can't tell them apart).
>Some teepads are short, but long run-ups really not needed much.
>Other park users can get in the way, especially the always crowded playground on hole 8 and cars are a potential target on hole 2, as are hoops players with a bad early release.

Other Thoughts:

BASICS:

>Teepads--Concrete, good condition, a couple are a little short.
>Baskets--Older Mach ?'s (except hole 1). Showing age, mostly single chain, some are a bit low to the ground.
># holes--9, one teepad, one pin position each.
>Setting--Very nice city park, with basketball and tennis courts, playground and several covered picnic tables.
>Elevation--Flatter than flat.
>Distance of holes--From about 185'-420'.
>Free/pay to play, type of course--Free, city park. Also busy, with lots of kids, so please consider lines and where an errant shot may land.
>Ease of getting to--Very easy, right in Troy, across from Hobart Arena.

AMENITIES:

>Parking--Exceedingly abundant, and you can park close to hole 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, or 9.
>Bathrooms--Yes, year-round flush. Bathroom was even heated in January. Nice for winter play to warm up between rounds.
>Water/food nearby--Abundant in Troy, plus water fountains in park, though closed for COVID now.
>Clubhouse/disc shop--No
>Benches--No
>Trash cans--Yes, scattered thru park.
>Bag holders--No
>Tee signs--Basic, with #, par, and distance, no graphic or hole outline, but most baskets easily visible from teepad.
>Next tee direction/signs--No, but not hard to figure out.
>Wheelchair/cart friendly--Yes, yes. Very flat course, no creek crossings.

COURSE PLAY:

>Shot variety--Average, a bit above for a niner. A couple forehand or turnover drives, most are more straight shot or slight hyzers for RHBH…but…there are ample trees on most holes which do force some shot shaping, gap hitting (nothing too hard though).
>Layout, long walks (inc back to car), loops--One loop, but never too far from wherever you start. Basket 9 about 300' from teepad 1.
>Total distance walked--0.8 miles.
>Ease of finding next tee--No signs, but pretty straightforward, except #3 goes same direction as fairway 2, and across the entry into park. Hole 5 is between tennis courts and street.
>General difficulty--For a city park 9 hole course, It's not bad even for an INT level player if you play all holes as par 3.
>Mud/water issues--None noted.
>Water or O/B to contend with-- None noted, although I am sure roads are O/B.
>Difficult rough/lost disc risk--As close to zero as I have ever seen. Maybe if one gets stuck high in a tree…
>Scrape/scratch risk--Other than pulling a KJones off the teepad, zero.
>How busy was course/park--Extremely--some tennis tournament was going on, but all holes were still playable. Lots of others in the park, but only saw one other person on course, on a beautiful weekday afternoon.

OVERALL:

>Fun/enjoyment factor, would I play again? Yes, it's one of the more enjoyable 9 hole courses I have played. Played here 4 times now. Nice setting, challenging but not difficult rec player level holes.
>Who will this course challenge? Mostly rec to int players, though if you play the course pars, beginners can get some birdies here too. 925 and up would likely have a birdie fest here.
>Is it worth a drive? If you are traveling up I-75 to play Toboggan or Flip, stop off for a respite, only 5 minutes off the freeway.
>Anything unique? Hole 1 is a grueling 240' low ceiling forehand….well, nah.
>Would be a half star higher with--9 more holes, benches, a bit more shot variety.

I am in my 50s, 80 or so courses played, 875ish.

Simple Course in Busy Park 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 6, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Plays pretty quickly with mostly short holes.
-For a 9-holer in a busy park, this course offers a good variety of throws and shots.
-Great tee pads and signs to help you navigate. A map will help, but for the most part it's not necessary. When you pull into the park, Hole 1 is on the far left side. Once you find it the course moves smoothly.
-Area is well kept. Grass is short. Baskets are visible from all tee pads.

Cons:

-The biggest issue is this course plays through a busy park. You may have to stop your game as a family full of toddlers runs though the middle of the lane. Most of the play grounds and other activities are far enough away that you don't have to worry about hitting anyone/anything, but this will definitely slow you down on a nice day.
-Hole 2 throws towards the parking lot. If the park is full, there will be a car in range of a slightly off shot for players who can throw 200 feet.

Other Thoughts:

Fun 9 hole course, but the amount of other activities lowers the reason to keep coming back. A good place for beginners though!

Pros:

Great course for beginners and advanced players with little time. Short holes and very flat, not to many trees.

Cons:

In the middle of a busy park so be careful of people walking in your fairway ( be polite it is their park to). Very short tee pads.

Other Thoughts:

If you are just starting to play disc golf this will be a great course for you!

Nine in a multi-use park 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 19, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The nice thing about the Troy Community Park disc golf course is that there are really good quality signs, and firm, level, concrete tee pads leading you to nine pleasant, lightly-treed park holes in the middle of town. Good for Recreational to Intermediate players in terms of hole distances (ranging from 225 to 420 feet in hole length), almost every hole gives you the option of several lines of attack, without being too demanding to hit a perfect line. You stand almost no chance of losing a disc here (unless you really grip lock something along the large river-retaining berm beside holes 1 & 6), and the good, level park isn't overly demanding to walk the course quickly in as little as a lunch break.

Cons:

The lack of elevation and big distance limits the 'wow' factor at Community Park, and the flow tends to be a little awkward (long walks between 2&3, 4&5, 5&6, and 8&9) because the course is shoehorned in amongst over a dozen shelters, play areas, tennis courts, and so on. The bulk of the tees (hole nine being the exception) are just adequate in terms of length (though they are generously wide). I would suspect that, on a nice spring day, you'd have to be very cautious about other park patrons.

The baskets are single-ring-of-chains DGAs, which means that, though the cage itself is deep, firm putts can cut through. I could not find a sign or tee pad for hole six on my two visits to town (though I admit I wasn't in town long, and both times, there was snow on the ground, so I might have walked right by it), so threw from approximately 420', as indicated online).

Other Thoughts:

This is a nice nine hole course, but it doesn't jump out at you with a signature hole to make it a must see or a destination course. It's awesome that the local community has a course, and would be a relatively nice leg-stretcher for the traveling disc golfer going up or down I-75. There is shade and play for the family, so I can imagine some players stopping here for a picnic lunch on a long trip.

Pros:

Clean. Fine for a quickie. I played it in 39 minutes. Some shot selection could vary for line practice.

Cons:

Short t pads but functional. Some baskets are for 3 foot children, not near PDGA ground to basket specs. Single chains. No sign for 6

Other Thoughts:

fine for a quickie but would not go out of my way, looks like it could be very busy in the summer.

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 12, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is spread out in a nice, multi-use park. There are concrete tees and nice tee signs that have a diagram, hole number and list the distance. The hole numbers are listed on a big sign on top of the basket.

There's a good variety of distance ranging from 225 to 420 feet but most holes are 300 feet or less. The course has mature tree to navigate on every hole. Some holes are a bit more on the open side while others have enough trees to force you to hit your line to be rewarded with a birdie.

Cons:

There's a lot of walking between holes on this course. I didn't see anything that points you from one hole to the next so it can be a bit difficult to navigate the course and find the next hole.

The road is a bit close for comfort to one hole (5 maybe?). The basketball course is rather close to the fairway on hole 2. There are a couple other places where errant shots could interfere with other park users so please watch for people.

Hole one forces a turnover shot for RHBH players, but the rest are straight or hyzer shots.

The tee pads are a bit on the small side.

Hole 6 is missing its tee sign. A few of the baskets are missing the large sign on top of them, but it's easy to figure out what basket you're shooting at so I didn't find this to be a problem.

Other Thoughts:

Overall this is a nice little 9 hole course that's good for newer and more intermediate skilled players. Like most 9 hole courses, there isn't too much challenge but there doesn't need to be considering 9 hole courses are usually intended for more casual players and as a place to introduce new people to the game.

Community Park, Troy 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 18, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Very nice park, well kept. Nice Tees. No underbrush to deal with. You can use a variety of shots on this course. Nice signs on tee pads.

Cons:

Busy park, be careful of wandering toddlers. :) No posted layout or signs directing to "Next Tee." The pars are too easy. Big trees with low branches make longer shots really tough (I actually call this a 'pro' also).

Other Thoughts:

This really felt like a beginner course as far as scoring. There were times when I had to make a tricky shot. I loved the fact that I could take my kids there and felt safe with them wandering the park with me (they tried to play a little too). It's a good practice course or casual course for someone just learning to play.

Troy community park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 29, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Nice terrain with good full grown trees as obstacles. Fairly easily navigable with signs at each hole.

Cons:

It is really close to the playground on a few holes and so sometimes kids will be near. It is a fairly short course so if you live far away I don't think it would be worth a far drive.

Other Thoughts:

Course is short so I recommend playing twice through to make it more worth the trip.

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 22, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Nice course. Large trees and mix of open and wooden holes. Close to town. Can start at almost any hole.

Cons:

Small teepads. Course pars seem like they are for beginners. No par 3 holes. Don't play after rain(which I did). If you play during or after rain, the tees and baskets are surrounded by mud.Fairly easy course. Only worth the drive if nearby. Hard to navigate if playing for the first time. Only one layer of chains.

Other Thoughts:

This was a nice course. I recommend this course to beginners/advanced players. Play 2 rounds in less than an hour if it is only you or a few people.

Signature hole: Hole 6. 420 ft with tons of trees to avoid.
