A lot of poison ivy 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 29, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Not a super difficult course, with multiple tee pads for some holes.

Cons:

There is poison ivy almost everywhere you don't land on the fairway, so I recommend either bringing some kind of wet wipes or something to wipe yourself off, or wash yourself really well afterwards.

Mostly open, mostly straight, and mostly uneventful... A “Plain” course in Plain City

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 17, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Glacier Ridge is one of the seemingly endless metro parks in the Columbus area. Metro Parks in this area are very welcoming to disc golfers, and I hope this spreads up to my area of Northeast Ohio.

+ All the ammentities are very nice. Two sets of concrete tees on most holes with awesome laminated tee signs at the short tees. Long tees have a post with the hole number and distance. Baskets are in great shape for the most part. Massive parking lot with a practice basket by the first tee.

+ Long tees aren't very difficult, but they do provides some added distance for more experienced players. Short tees are great for newbies with many holes under 200'.

Cons:

- The wooded holes consist of #1-3, and #17-18. I'm not going to sugarcoat anything, these holes are garbage. Since I'm assuming they couldn't cut down any trees, they just utilized the gravel walking path for the fairways. No real lines, just throwing down a gravel path.

- The mainly wide open holes are #4-16. With the exception of a few cool tosses that utilize isolated mature trees and occasional hills, there's not much to speak of. No shot shaping, just straight and open.

- Rough can be brutal, but it's not to difficult to avoid. Just make sure to watch your shots and keep em' straight.

- Multiple pin positions doesn't affect my rating, but I'll always put it in the cons. Find the best position and stick with it!

Other Thoughts:

Glacier Ridge might be a decent place to bring beginners but I definitely believe it's a little overrated. Bland holes outweigh the few fun holes making for a below average course.

Very Solid Short Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 15, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Baskets and teepads were in fine shape
-I love how the course goes through the woods twice. Most courses has its 3-4 holes in the woods and you're out in the open, Glacier Ridge forces you to finish your round in the woods
-Pro tees actually call for holes that are more challenging
-Fairways are well maintained and paths were mowed out from baskets to the next tees
-There are lots of bridges around the course to help players avoid marshy areas

Cons:

-A tad on the short side
-Even though there is some elevation change and protector trees in play, pretty much all of the open holes play dead straight.

Other Thoughts:

This course is fun to play and well maintained, but unfortunately it still falls in pitch and putt territory. I put the challenge level very similar to Columbus' Blendon Woods.

Perfect example of great course design by Parks and Rec! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 29, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

I'll start right off saying I'm a bit biased in my review as I see this course as really well designed for the land use involved, and so I give it an extra half a star rating over previous high rankings because I think it earned it. It has wormed its way into my top local favorites and that alone deserves a decent bump.
-First element to touch on is great tee pads, two positions on pretty much every hole, and in positions that in several cases are not just a longer straighter version of the shorter tee. (#7 is a great example of this)
-The transition from heavily wooded, to open (but clearly defined and mowed) fairways in high brush, and back again is genius.
-I love the use of topographic detail and trees here. There are some cleverly integrated elements to this course that make most of the holes challenging and interesting.
-Its amazing how just a tree or two has been used as a guardian/shot shaping element on multiple holes in the open field portion that really adds difficulty.
-Where there isn't an old gnarled tree to add difficulty out in the field, new trees have been planted! Every new course should take this into consideration.
-Rolling hills also make for a few semi elevated tees or elevated greens and #7s grove of trees is super tough.
-There are also a few small bogs/ponds/creeks in the open area that need to be considered, so water does come into play at different times of the year.
-Its true there are few straight shot situations that might bore a few, but the thing is that during most of the season you DO NOT want to end up in the tall grass so it requires pinpoint placement. Not only are there ticks to contend with, but good luck finding your disc buried in there. I've found several discs in the high grass from other players myself.
-I really like the woods shots, and feel like that last few might be my favorite. 17 (from the shorts) is a great place to work on thumbers, and 18 is a must RHFH.

Cons:

-Its way off the highway out in an affluent and remote area of Dublin. Its a pain to get to it and that sucks.

Other Thoughts:

-I don't have a huge arm, so always play this from the shorts. I feel like the shots from there ARE more fun anyway, so maybe long arms won't actually like this course, but I doubt it.
-I think this course is on par with Simsbury, Hambick, The Players DGC, and Holton in terms of intelligent course design within the boundaries of the space involved. I'd go so far as to say it beats out the first two for what it had to work with and sits square in the middle.
-BE AWARE that the pics for this course are loaded a little screwy. Looks like you are looking at the shot and THEN the tee for most of the pic sequences. Keep this in mind. Again #7 is a good example to check out to see what I mean.

Par 3 Ball golf feel…sort of 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 19, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Starting its holes in the woods, having 14 alternate tee pads (adding up to 2000 feet to the layout!), and with two pin positions per hole, Glacier Ridge offers an amazing amount of variety, but still lives up to its nickname, "The Wind Machine". The open holes play in what are often windy conditions, along well-mown fairways and greens, with frequent hillocks and gently rolling elevation. With the addition of bridges and walkways over creeks and marshy areas, this course reminds me a great deal of a nice Par 3 ball golf course out there: you hope to ace, but can put your shot on the green for a likely deuce, or get just off into the field grasses for a three.

The woods holes are shorter and tighter, but relatively forgiving if you don't hit your line. There isn't a huge amount of underbrush, and the fairways and paths have been thoroughly graveled to help with the marshy, damp ground underfoot in this wetlands preserve park. I should mention that all the tees are generously sized, level concrete, all the baskets are quality DGA's, each short tee has a nice descriptive sign, the long tees have posts, and there is good kiosk sign at the start where they could add a course map to the other park brochures. And it all looks newer than 2006! Either maintenance is incredible out here, or this course has recently undergone some revitalization.

The holes themselves are relatively easy for the Recreational to Intermediate disc golfer, if you're out for a fun round from the short tees like I was. Most (but not all) of the long tees (100 to 200 feet longer, per hole!) play along the same line, allowing the bigger arms to show off a bit (and punishing us weaker arms: I suspect the difference may be as much as 15 strokes per round). The woods holes require you to hit some really tight lines, and several of the open holes have swampy marsh water, often just off the green, to avoid.

Cons:

Though the course flow is mostly intuitive, there are some lengthy walks from basket to tee if you're only playing the shorts. You'll need to look to your right across the path between 5 and 6. There is a moment of confusion when you walk from the 7th basket to the 8th tee, and walk right past the 10th tee.

There isn't much that can be done here, but this course obviously holds water all over, and you'd be surprised how soft the ground gets underfoot, in the woods, especially in the spring.

Other Thoughts:

Your first time to the park, your car's Nav system might take you to the Honda Wetlands area of Glacier Ridge, which turns out to be about three miles south on Hyland Croy Road (mine did just that). Make sure you turn into the REAL DG part of the park across from the elementary school, drive past the horse barn and park on the left by the woods.

Great Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 25, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is a very fun course for all ages with two tee pads per hole for adults and kids. Every time I've played it it has been very well maintained with regularly cut fairways and clear paths from hole to hole. The tee-to-hole diagrams are very accurate and the course is literally right in my grandparents backyard. Also, there is little to no traffic or waiting to throw.

Cons:

There is a lot of tall grass on some of the holes resulting in narrower fairways and many ticks so long pants recommended. In some of the more wooded holes there is some poison ivy so once again you should wear long pants.

Ticks! 2+ years drive by

Pros:

Quiet for being close to a city
Nicely laid out
Good design

Cons:

Tall grass in the warmer months
Ticks and other pests everywhere
Almost every shot is straight ahead (no dog legs)
Fairway is only 6 feet wide in most places

Other Thoughts:

Maybe I'm too used to courses with dog legs and other obstacles, but nearly every shot had to be perfectly straight or I had to go make friends with the ticks in the tall grass to find my disc. Nearly every throw turned into a disc hunt.

Fun and Scenic 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 16, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Very pretty and quiet park. After playing packed courses closer to Columbus, this one was a breath of fresh air. With the multiple tee pads the course went from basically a pitch-and-putt course to one where you can really air it out.

The course (when I was here) was in perfect shape, the fairways recently cut and the path through the woods pristine. And I really liked how you start in the woods, hit the open field, then dive back in the woods. Really made the course fun

Cons:

Except for the 6 holes in the woods, the course is mostly flat and open which can be boring for those with 900+ ratings. With my sub-900 and less than 2 years of playing, I enjoyed it. But if you get off the fairway, the grass is almost waist high and that can make it quite hard to find your disc

Other Thoughts:

When I was here there was a light shower that left a double rainbow over the course which made it quite beautiful. For those that are novice to intermediate, you'll love the course. If you're advanced and beyond, it won't do much for you.

Pros:

This course in my opinion is a well thought out course. One thing is that most of the holes are out of the woods a big thumbs up for me. Great use of multiple tees. It even has some over 400 ft tees.

Cons:

The only things I dont approve of are the ticks and playing this course in the summer because of the high grass. Besides that any time of the year I'd go play it. Even winter just not the summer.

Other Thoughts:

I always play the practice basket before playing. I really have to say is at any time of the year besides summer this course is a must play

Pros:

Long and short tees

Nice pads and baskets

Practice basket with picnic table (don't jump on the table, you will get a stern talking to! - trust me)

Well defined fairways

Cons:

Tick infested rough

Course lacks technical diversity on wide open holes

When the rough is high, discs are difficult to find

Other Thoughts:

Hole one throws into the woods. The next couple holes are tight tunnel shots of moderate distance. Hole 4 is the first dual pad hole. Here you shoot back out of the woods. You stay out in the middle of the field until you shoot back in on hole 16. 17 & 18 are tight and wooded.

I like that you start and finish in the woods. It can make or break you. When competing with others, you always know that on the the last couple holes, anything can happen. Though the middle of the course is open, it is strangely interesting. When looking from the road, all you see is multiple baskets strewn across the land, but once engaged, there are subtleties that keep each hole interesting.

The short course is full of deuces and ace opportunities. The longs provide some deuces but your putting had better be in order. A few of the 400+ foot holes allow you to really air it out.

This is a fun course. The design makes great use of the few natural obstacles present in the field. The layout is quick. You can get in a couple rounds in a very short time span.

Narrow Fairways 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 8, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Gives you a chance to get in a flow
-First four holes and last three are wooded with narrow fairways and tall trees on both sides. The distance on these is doable.
-If you are looking to practice that 150 to 300 foot approach shot, this is your course.
-if you want to know how your disc will do on windy days, this is your course.
-Pro tees are relatively long. Longest holes are around 450 feet.
-There's a windmill in sight to check the wind speed and direction.

Cons:

-There's a reason they call this course the "wind tunnel". Bring your overstable and understable Discs.
-Trees can just get annoying. Even the straightest shot can get punished.
-Get ready to spend 15-20 minutes looking for a disc. There are narrow fairways.
-Bring bug spray, tick repellant, and premium plastic discs.

Other Thoughts:

One of my favorite courses. After hole four you can really get into a rhythm. Great course to bring your friends to and just enjoy a day out.

Pros:

-Wonderful park location
-Both open and wooded holes.
-Great tees and signs.
-Nice putting practice area.
-Park offers many other activities worth taking advantage of.
-Very well maintained.
-You will learn how to play windy shots here!

Cons:

-May not provide enough challenge to advanced players
-OB areas on some of the non-wooded holes are have pretty high overgrowth.
-Course is almost entirely flat

Other Thoughts:

It is named the Wind Machine for a reason! Bring a good headwind overstable disc or two with you when you come.

Much of what other reviewers noted is very true such as the lack of trash cans, thick open rough, and lack of obsticles.

However...

This course is VERY well kept and enjoyable to play. Although not the most challenging or technical it makes for a nice round. This may not be the 'best' course you'll play in central OH, but nothing about it will turn you away. I work fairly close to this course and have had many a' fun round on the ol' Wind Machine.

One final note: I happen to know the guy who says this course is full of ticks. We play rounds quite often. (Yes Rudy...that means you) I personally have never walked off this course with a tick on me. They just like him for some reason! I think any disc golfer who has gone trudging for a lost disc in the woods or in tall rough knows about ticks. They don't just live here.

Nice Concrete Tee Pads
Great Tee Signs
Pro and Am Tees on Most Holes
Two Pin Positions Per Hole
Park Staff Friendly and Helpful
Bullentin Board With Pin Positions Listed
Practice Basket
Ample Parking
Baskets Are In Great Shape
Easy to Navigate

Cons:

Very Little Elevation Changes
Rough Can Eat Discs
Ticks Are A Huge Problem
Too Many Open Holes
Not A Lot of Variety

Other Thoughts:

Course is pretty easy to locate, once you are in the park just look for the bulletin board, first tee is located a few feet away. Before you place check the bulletin board it will tell you which pin placement they are currently using, not that there are any blind holes on the course.

The first 3 holes are played through the woods. They are somewhat technical, but very short which is unfortunate.

Hole 4 starts inside the woods and plays out into the open field. It is very short and the only thing that can be challenging is if it is really windy throwing from inside the woods to the open field can be tricky.

Hole 5 is pretty mundane, just your average straight shot, might go a little left.

Holes 6 and 7 are what I believe to be the two best. For one, they are the only two with any sort of elevation change, but also because the have nice mature trees that provide a bit of challenge and they aren't really short like all of the other wooded holes.

Hole 8 is another one of your straight open shots. If you are playing during the rainy spring months there are a couple small water hazards that are up near the basket, but unless it has been raining a lot they will be dry. If there is water, they aren't deep, a little nasty at times, but you will definitely be able to get your disc back.

Hole 9, open shot.

Hole 10 is another one of the better holes on this course. There is a small creek with a bridge and a very large tree that provided you with some challenge on this one.

Holes 11 through 15 are pretty much all wide open shots. There are a couple more small water hazards throughout, all knee deep at most, only challenges on any of these holes is the wind, which can be rough at times.

Hole 16 starts in the open, but the basket is located back inside the woods.

Hole 17 is back in the woods, from the pro tee this can by far be the hardest hole on the course no matter which pin placement is in use.

Hole 18 starts in the woods, and takes you back out into the open right back at the start of the course.

Overall I would say the course is pretty plain. Nothing memorable, but definitely not a bad course. The park rangers are very friendly and do a great job keeping this place nice, so help them out and use the trash cans.

The layout of the course is not too bad for what they had to work with. There are both wooded and open holes, but there is really no elevation changes and the biggest challenge on this course is the wind. During the summer the course can get pretty hot, so bring plenty of water, once you get out of the woods there is little to no shade so the sun just beats down on you. The course also has a huge tick problem. During the warm spring and summer months you are guaranteed to have at least one on you per round. This course is definitely not the best in the area, but is great if you are short on time or need a beginner friendly course. The course is always windy, its is more of a question of how windy. If it is really windy when you are stopping to pick up your gatorade and snacks at the gas station, then its going to be two or three times worse at this course, if you aren't a fan of playing in wind, I would head to a different course for the day. Like I said this is the course I head to if we have some beginners or an hour or less to get in a round, if I really want to get in a great round, I head to Hoover (Brent Hambrick) or Gordon Holton up in Delaware.

A nice pit-stop 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 13, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Very well maintained park with dual tees and multiple pin positions on many holes. Great signage with distances and nice hole maps. It seems the parks department is proud of the DG course and it shows. You'll find which position the pins are currently in on the course bulletin board which is very nice.

Cons:

Very little elevation or challenge for the most part. Most holes play in a flat field with mowed fairways bordered by thick rough on either side. The wooded holes were also a bit on the short side. Also, it would be nice if the pro tees had tee signs rather than just wooden posts.

Other Thoughts:

The wooded holes play a little too short which eliminated some of the challenge factor associated with those holes. The open holes (which is a majority of the course) derive most of their challenge from length (assuming you're playing from the pro tees). I played during the tail end of winter so the rough wasn't as thick as it probably is in the summer. I can see it becoming a much stronger incentive to keep it on the fairway in the warmer months to avoid trudging through the weeds searching for discs.

I was there on a Friday afternoon and the park wasn't crowded at all. There was only one other guy on the course and a handful of people in the rather large park. Perhaps weekends draw more people in. It's a very serene setting as I believe some of the park is used as a wildlife preserve which made for a quiet, relaxing round in my case.

Despite its shortcomings, I found my round at Glacier Ridge pretty enjoyable. It wasn't particularly memorable as most of the holes are pretty much the same (open field shots) so if you only have time for one course, I'd recommend Gordon Holton about 10-15 minutes away. Overall, I can't say I would drive out of my way to play the course or go to COlumbus specifically to play here but it was a nice DG pit-stop on my way down to the Dayton/Cincinnati area.

Pros:

Great mix of hole length and pin placement as well as wooded and open(more open though). The land has been well utilized for its natural features including the wind, which can really kick up from time to time. Course par is fair and if your a better golfer they has long tees on most holes. Tee Signs are great and even show you a line to the hole. Bonus Basket by 1st tee with marked distances, excellent for practicing your short game, particularly with the wind kicking up.

Cons:

Trash cans are few and far between and not everyone is willing to carry thier refuse till the next. Water features are shown on tee signs but are not really there.

Other Thoughts:

Take your own refreshments as there is no visble fountain. This course could raise it's rating by installing some water features where shown, as well as changine the basket placement a little more frequently.
