Better Than I Expected 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 14, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- free to play, plenty of parking
- concrete tees
- tee signs with large numbers, easy to see from far away and lists distances
- quality baskets
- numbered baskets
- course starts and finishes at parking lot
- low traffic
- beginner friendly
- course design does a good job incorporating the park trees for mild shot shaping
- well maintained landscaping
- lots of shade
- ace runs

Cons:

- near a busy road
- course borders a fence line
- fairways mostly open
- fairway overlap
- course limited by size of the park
- flat course
- limited access, base course
- located next to a flightline, which could get gusty and loud at any moment

Other Thoughts:

Keesler AFB is a short to medium length beginner friendly 9 hole course. The tees are concrete, the grass was low, and the fairways were forgiving. For some reason the baskets were mounted in large circular slabs of concrete. They're damn near as big as the tee pads! This is one of those courses that you could use a large assortment of discs or just a few and still have a good time. I found myself emptying my entire bag of more than a couple holes, looking for perfect lines. They did a great job using the available trees to create shot shaping opportunities. It was simple yet fun

The only downers were that a couple holes played too close to the main road or a fence line, the fairways overlapped in places, and access to the course is somewhat limited. Other than that, I'd say it was more fun than the average course of that size and orientation. A few of the base gates are closed on weekends, go to the gate near a Burger King (back?), take the first left after entering base and the course is on your left. You can't miss it.

9 holes on a military site 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 10, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

If you're in the air force, stationed an Keesler and want to keep your disc golf game going this course is available to you. Built right at the west entrance this is a decent little 9 hole course to keep your skills up. It is pretty easy to navigate with easily visible signs. Beautifully constructed concrete pads make sure you won't have many footing difficulties here. As its only 9 holes and pretty short this is a great "intro to the game" course as its not very demanding. Surprisingly though there is a decent amount of variety in the holes and even one that you'd do well to know how to throw a roller in order to reach for a birdie putt.

Cons:

First and foremost, unfortunately for most golfers it is located on the air force base and so your only access if you are not a member of the the military is to find someone who can get you in. For seasoned golfers this is not a course worth making the trip to Biloxi to play, but if you're in the area, can get access and only have a short time to play this is worth the trip.
One of the holes ( I think its hole 4) plays directly over the tee pad of one of the later holes (7). I don't believe they have any specific events here but if they did this would obviously pose a problem. There is little to no long distance at this course and you could easily play the entire thing with your favorite mid-range/fairway driver and a putter.

Other Thoughts:

With Hiller park not more than a couple miles down the road I would recommend playing it over the Keesler course but if you can get on, are a beginner or looking to introduce someone to the game this is a nice little course. If nothing else this course can keep your game fresh if you're stationed there.

Distractions-R-US[AF] 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jan 9, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Almost completely shaded by large, gnarly old oaks, this short and entertaining 9-holer will require a wide variety of short-game shots not typical of the usual quickie course. There's no ground cover to hide discs, but expect smackdowns from errant throws: even the leaves and small branches are tough enough to grab/deflect/hold discs. Very few discers on this course due to public access issues. Zero elevation change. Great for beginners, a fun distraction/short-shot tuneup for more experienced players.
Cement tees and good Discatchers. Bathroom, water and picnic tables nearby.

Cons:

Right next to base entrance--constant traffic. Right next to flight line--constant touch-and-go aircraft. Biggest bummer--you need a military sponsor to get on base. If you toss over the fence to the right on #s 3-4, you have to leave the base to retrieve your disc---if the neighbor doesn't race out and steal it first.
Hot, humid and miserable most of the year; just miserable the rest.

Other Thoughts:

The marina has distance drivers you'd never need on this course--a double nod to the egos of noobs and pingers. As you must have a military ID, and courses now exist at Hiller Park in Biloxi and Brickyard Bayou in Gulfport, no one plays this course except the AF personnel, and they couldn't hit the broad side of an airstrip with a C-130, so they don't play it either.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 9, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Great beginner course! The holes are easy enough for the beginner to learn everything they need to know. The lanes are set up so you can practice just about any throw and hone your skills.

Cons:

Hole 3, there is a fence along the right side. On the other side is a residential area and one of the people there likes to take the discs. Ants, Mosquitos and the occasional wasp.

Other Thoughts:

You would either have to be military, a dependent, or have a military sponsor to get you on the base.

Great Beginner Course! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 15, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Course has a variety of shots to develop skills, while also encouraging those with little experience by providing seemingly tricky shots that are not at all difficult (ie: a valley of trees, or a small horse-shoe hole). For experienced players, it provides a nice, quiet environment for enhancing your shots, with rarely any interference. The constant influx of new students on the base creates a LARGE capacity to expand this sport!!

Cons:

For the experienced players, this course may be a little boring, as it doesn't provide many challenges. The hardest shot is probably hole 4, in which you must go under a large, low-lying tree, while dodging various other trees. Another con is the need for a military sponsorship to gain access, as its located on the air base.

Other Thoughts:

In general, this is a great course for those wishing to learn the sport. I was here at Keesler for a 6 week training course (NCOA) and had the opportunity to teach it to 4 individuals by the end of week 2!

Keesler 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 2, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Definitely a "back yard" practice course for those of us stationed or living around here. Great for the mid-range and putting practice. Very open, so you can set up any kind of shot from many different angles and around trees if you want to practice certain shots. The only course very close by in the Biloxi-Gulfport area.

Cons:

There's construction blocking about 1/3 of the course and the base fence is something also to watch out for. Seems repetitive no matter what hole you are on. The baskets are rusted, so you almost need to be dead-on most of the holes to get it to grab your disc or it will bounce off.

Other Thoughts:

The positive thing for us, is that we have a course at all. It's a great practice course, but what are we practicing for if we don't have something nicer close by somewhere. The next closest course is about 18 miles away depending on where you live down here, and I know those courses aren't anything to gawk at. It'd be nice for a great course to open up down here. Heard there used to be a private one in Gulfport. SOMEONE BUILD ONE PLEASE!!

Deceptive! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 20, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

A great beginner course at just the right price...FREE! This course is just easy enough to get you excited about the sport by shooting low, but can deceive you as to your true skill level.

Cons:

Deceptively easy compared to the "standard" course which is much more wooded and requires multiple skill shots to reach the basket. Fire ants and mosquitoes are an issue! You'll need a military sponsor to get on the base to play this course.

Other Thoughts:

This course is really fun and gives you a chance to hone the simplest of shots. Great for practicing putting and figuring out distances of discs. All in all...I'd suggest it for sure.

Keesler AFB 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 10, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Free course (if you can get on base) not crowded ever. Grounds are well groomed. Requires some technical throws (mostly straight though), but nothing too hard. Concrete tee pads on all holes except for #1. Nice Chainstar baskets... catch disc well.

Cons:

Getting on base to play this course... I believe you have to be military or have a military sponsor. Trees can keep poorly thrown disc from coming down. No holes over 330ft. Holes 2 and 7 share the same basket so "if" there are other people on the course you may be shooting at the same hole. FIRE ANTS!!! Be careful when picking up your disc, also you should bring bug spray... lots of mosquitoes. Only 9 holes.

Other Thoughts:

Lots of trees, but mostly a open course... Par is not hard to shoot here at all Unless there is a fair amount of wind, Wind is a great equalizer on this course. I've come up with score cards and optional holes for this park. Enough to play 5 other optional (9 hole) courses, these are in an Microsoft Excel spreadsheet including tee location and estimated distance using Google Earth. Also have maps of these optional holes in Microsoft Power Point. If you are interested, email me at [email protected] or check the files and pictures I've uploaded to this site.
