older course

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 14, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

-nice park with lots of mature trees
-discatchers, concrete tees, new tee signs
-older design with nearly half the holes under 250', one over 400' and one more at 550'; a good AM2-AM3 level course
-alternate dirt tees that are sometimes longer and sometimes shorter
-kiosk with a course map
-easy navigation, even with baskets missing (see next)
-there is an alternate layout for the course

Cons:

-there is an alternate layout for the course; as a traveling player it sucked. 9 of the baskets are across the road on this layout
-some of the concrete tees have become slick
-walking path that is in play on a number of holes
-will probably be boring for advanced players

Other Thoughts:

In some ways, it is unfair for me to review this course. I played the regular layout on a day when the alternate layout was in effect. A sign at hole 1 indicated that the "combo layout", as they call it, was in use and to check UDisc for the course map. I don't have a smartphone or use UDisc so I thought "I'll just figure it out". That didn't work out so well as 9 of the baskets get moved across the street to a different area of the park, which I didn't know at the time. So I followed the concrete tees and brand-new-looking tee signs and ended up just throwing to baskets that weren't there for half the holes. Along the way I started to see flags for temp tees and finally got the scoop from a few locals. Since this was the 4th course of the day for me with plans to hit 2 more, I just continued on through the regular layout for the sake of time. Finally, I noticed on my way out that the alternate course is actually listed on the course map at the kiosk. Nobody but myself to blame, I guess.

The layout was easy to follow and the detailed maps on the new signs allowed me to "play" the holes that had relocated baskets. The holes make their way through natural lanes of mature trees on most holes, with most of those lanes being pretty generous but at least a handful that get a little tighter. The walking path through the park ends up in play in a few places but it's usually the tees that are next to the path rather than the baskets. You can tell it's an older course, most of the holes are on the shorter side. It's in good shape for a course built in 1992, especially with the new signs. I wasn't looking for the alternate tees but it's always nice to have that option.

This is the oldest course in Wichita Falls and seems like the kind of course that still gets the most play. It's close to downtown, has the most trees (except for the private River's Edge course), and is accessible to a wide range of players. I was annoyed about the alternate layout but that was my bad and probably not an issue 90% of the time. I was pretty hot about it that day though and I really do think it's not reasonable to require people to use UDisc just to play a course that has been around for 32 years (I know, I know, it's on the course map!) I think we should let our older, shorter courses be what they are and let new locations house the championship layouts that club members want. To be fair, that's easy to say about someone else's community. I'm just a visitor, thanks for the courses!

For visitors, this is the obvious place to catch a round in Wichita Falls. Classic, park-style disc golf that's easy to get to and easy to follow. Course connoisseurs should look into the private River's Edge course or the Wind Creek course on the AFB but for most players, Lucy Park will suffice.

Fun older course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 15, 2018 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Real trees! It makes some of the shorter tees a bit more fun and it gives you a break from the wind.

Public bathrooms are nearby.

The park is pretty much kept trimmed and clean for most of the year.

Cons:

We could use signs for each tee box (this may be in the works?).

Alternate tee pads (this is definitely in the works).

It is in a public park, so you go get the occasional non-player(s) wandering through the fairway.

It needs a few more trashcans. My friends and I usually pick up other people's garbage and dispose of it, while we play our rounds.

Lucy Park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 24, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Located in a nice city park. This park has a lot of trees in it, old growth trees. A lot more trees and nicer trees than you would imagine being in Wichita Falls. This is probably the biggest feature of this park, it has much better trees than anything else in the area. The trees help cut down on the wind, so that's a major asset. The holes tend to be shorter for the most part, with a few longer ones thrown in.

Cons:

The tees are marked with short markers on the ground, so it's difficult to spot them from a distance. Since this course winds around into itself, you really need the map to locate the next tee. It's often not intuitive on where to go.
A lot of the holes close off RHBH lines, but leave a lot of RHFH lines open, so a righty with a strong flick can really attack many of the holes.
The park can get pretty busy from non disc golfers.

Pros:

-Wind affects your game less than any other WF area courses.

-Easiest course in WF area (playing all par 3's)

-Lots of shorter holes for ace chances and birdies

Cons:

-Sometimes isn't mowed at sports field height

-Tee posts are at the end of the Tees

-While the Tee boxes are concrete, they aren't raised and can sometimes have dirt on them making them slick

Other Thoughts:

One of my favorite courses in town.

Great Golf, Needs Signs 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 2, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good Concrete Tees
Good Baskets
Next Tee arrows on most baskets (some were pointed a little off)
Some Teesigns (distance in yards)
Plenty of Benches/rocks
Plenty of Trashcans
Very Clean and well kept
Plenty of parking
Bathrooms and water fountain
Pavilion and gathering area for Tourneys

Love the layout for the most part
Great Variety
Some short/med/long
Some Right/straight/left
Some Open/technical/tight
Some forced lines/options
Some up(ish)/flat/down(ish)
Makes you throw several different shots
Works your accuracy
Even the "repetetive" holes all had those little differences that matter
Something for everyone
Great for beginners
Int and adv can work on their placement and Midranges
A few places to air it out
Great place to take Family/Noobies to

Playground and picnic area for the family
Walking path or volleyball for the Non-DG'ers

Favorite Hole(s): #3, #18

Cons:

Very Few Tees had anything except hole #
Needs directionals and a map badly
What Teesigns there were had distance in Yards (some were way off)
#2 and #15 had dirt tees with very little marking (2's basket was moved making the existing pad irrelevant)
Several holes (8-10 I think) were kind of repetetive
Walking path could cause safety issues if the place was busy
A few of the baskets need the numbers "refreshed"

Other Thoughts:

Overall this course is a very fun round. Definitely a good stop if you're in the area. If I lived in the area I would be here often. Worth traveling a little way to play. Not a destination course by any stretch.

The play is very good and is worth the hassle of looking for tees (IMO).

I will definitely play here again when I come through. The fun factor on this course overcomes the lack of good signage enough for me to rate it 3.5.

PM me and let me know how I can make my reviews "more helpful."

So close, yet so far away 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 2, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a very nice, old city park in Wichita Falls. Play winds around through old growth trees, picnic areas, and a nice walkway. The overall experience was very pleasant.

I really appreciated the layout, as it incorporated long and short, left, right, and straight shots very well. No two holes felt the same to me.

The pads and baskets were in good shape, though obviously well worn and aging. There was plenty of parking and I think there were restrooms (didn't have to check).

Not overly crowded (on labor day), but enough people to ask for help if needed, which leads to my main con...

Cons:

...Signage! Please, for the love of Pete, improve the signage! Okay, so I get frustrated when I spend more time hunting baskets and pads than throwing plastic (or rubber). Maybe I'm weird. But, several times I spent 5-10 minutes trying to figure out if this pad goes to that basket. Most of the pads were marked and most of the baskets were marked, but they didn't necessarily coincide. Thankfully there were several friendly people that helped me on my journey.

Really, other than signs, I have no major complaints. Just the typical shortcomings of a city park that hamper the designer in their efforts. Space constraints and working around the other park activities did cause some awkward transitions, but nothing major.

Other Thoughts:

I thoroughly enjoyed this course and hope to return. I really enjoyed pretty much every hole and was impressed with the maintenance of the course. I highly recommend playing here if you can.

My biggest suggestion is to find a local if you're traveling through. If you're a local, please organize a group to put up some signs. Thanks!

Nice, shady, int-beginner course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 17, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Pretty course
Flat, easy to walk,
With good shot placement, should be birdie-heaven.
Short holes are nice for those who haven't perfected long drive yet.
Most baskets have arrows pointing to the next tee-pad

Cons:

Short shots aren't going to challenge those with long drives.
park is obviously used quite a bit, during busy times, non-DGers could become hazards.
Course flows well, but many baskets are unmarked and only a few yards from other baskets making it a guessing game ot figure out which basket you're throwing for.

Other Thoughts:

Hole 1 doesn't have arrow pointing to 2nd tee-pad. (It's back and too the right if you're facing the basket for 1)
Distances, if present, are marked in yards.
Hole 10 basket is marked as 16.

Great Beginner/Rec Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 5, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Great course for beginners and recreational players. Park is kept up very well and usually very little trash on the course. Course is easy to navigate. Has the option for multiple pin placements but has not been changed in quite some time.

Cons:

Tee pads on 6 and 11 have been worn down and are slick. No significant challenge for Intermediate or better players. Only long hole is 13 but it is wide open. Not wooded enough to be called "technical".

Other Thoughts:

This is the course I learned to play and still love playing a round here.

*easy layout, makes for quick walk from basket to tees
*plays quickly (i played both wichita falls courses under 3.5 hours, with the drive and a convient store break)
*great beginer course
*limited tree coverage, just enough to get new player use to playing
*weather affects course, north texas winds can change the way you play course
*concrete tees (are becoming slick though esp 6)
*most baskets good condition
*multiple basket positions
*set up in nice park, with limited oustide interference, only a few walkways plays through course
*plays completley different then other city course

Cons:

*beginer course
*lack of "trademark hole"
*skilled players may feel too easy
*hole 7 and 8 can flood (when there is rain and not 105 degrees)
*fairways for most part are wide open (one or two tree placements could really make shots challenging
*texas summer heat
---besides being a beginner course, i do not have alot of knocks on it, because overall its a nice little course

Other Thoughts:

This is the course i learned on, so im a bit partial to it.
Its great to get new players into the game

Pros:

Beautiful Park. Peaceful and pleasant. Nice course for beginner players or those wanting to work on their short game.

Cons:

Almost every hole is very short which is not fun hole after hole. I actually drove to the wrong basket a couple of times because I could not believe that the correct basket was that close. I used my putter from the tee box about 3/4 of the time.

Other Thoughts:

The course made good use of trees but adding about 40 feet to most of the holes would make for a course that more experienced players will enjoy.

Lucy Park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 15, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Concrete tee pads
Multiple pin placements
Benches & trash cans
Course doesn't seem to get crowded
There's an arrow on most baskets, pointing to the next tee
Bulletin board at first tee

Cons:

No putting practice basket

A set of posts at the front corner of each tee pad. One identifies the hole number, & one lists yardage. I couldn't help but feel like these posts were in the way, every time I threw from the tee. I could see this actually becoming a safety issue down the road. Better signs would be a nice improvement.

Other Thoughts:

This course is on the East side of a large city park, near the swimming pool. Not a technical course, but there are mature trees to contend with, as well as walking paths which can be considered OB.

Great Park, Could Be Even Better 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 7, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Baskets in great shape, and graffiti free. Good mix of shots, both open and with trees. Beautiful surroundings, very well manicured. Good mix of distances, most holes seemed to be at least 300 ft. Hole 13 if I had to guess would be around 700 ft. Many ace ops, but bad shots are easily punished. Concrete tees. Arrows on baskets pointing to next tee. Awesome waterfall about 1/2 a mile away (Should have made it part of the course ;) ) Plenty of trash cans, and mostly litter free. Hard to loose a disc here.

Cons:

Lack of sinage. There were usually the hole number, and the distance (in yards, which is odd) on posts on the outside of the tee pads. Course is crammed into a wide open park, the land could be used in a much better manor for DG. Although the walks between tees are short, the course has a really odd flow to it. Even though the tees were concrete, they were slippery even though they were dry.

Other Thoughts:

This could easily and inexpensively be made into a 4.5 or 5.0 course with a good redesign, and good signs. If you are in the Wichita Falls area, it is certainly a must play, I will stop again on my way through.
