Ace runs, easy twos, and some great plains wide-open bombers too. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 23, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

It's on the campus of Missouri Western State University, and I think their grounds crew must have blackmail material on the Dean, because they have the sort of budget that allows them to be out there mowing every week. Even though the course is carpeted in a mix of wild grass and clover, it never gets disc-gobblingly thick. The only time the grass gets tall is when it rains for many days in a row (such as in April) and the ground is too soft to mow, and the second consecutive dry day, you can be sure they'll be out there mowing.

The baskets are in great shape, there's ample parking, and the course is quite easy to follow. The front nine warms up your arm with mostly under-300-foot ace runs and must-get birdies, then the back nine plays up and down an open and rolling hillside with lots of 400-or-so-foot par 3s. There's just enough trees on the front nine that you can't just lazily flip a disc at a basket, although there's nothing quite so dense or technical as a typical forest tunnel shot.

Cons:

There are no tee pads, and ruts have formed at some tee areas. There is just one trash bin, and the only three benches are on the front nine. The information kiosk at the first hole has an active wasp nest inside it, so watch out! Also, MWSU is a dry campus, so keep your drinks on the down low, or John Law might ask you to kindly leave. (They generally don't get out of their patrol cars, though, so you'd really have to make a big show of yourself to get their attention. Ssh.)

The course is split into two major halves by a very deep forested ravine with a trickle of a creek at the bottom, and 75-100' of super-dense forest (practically jungle from May through August) on either side. This wooded area is lushly carpeted with ivy (some poison, some not) and high weeds and thorny vines at least five feet high from the ground. If you throw into these woods from holes 1-4 or 10-12, watch where it went in and don't take your eye from that spot. If it's more than a few feet into the thick, you will likely come out with some new scratches from grabby thorns, and a peculiar kind of vine that I've seen nowhere else that is coated in razor-sharp spines as densely as hairbrush bristles, which will leave you looking like you fell off a motorcycle if you brush against it.

Long story short: don't throw into the woods. No good comes of this.

For three weeks late every summer, the Kansas City Chiefs have their training camp at the football stadium adjacent to the course, and the crowd control barricades can make holes 1, 8, and 9 a bit of a hassle. Also, when the camp is in session, the ample free parking lot becomes a pay lot. This is a minor ding, as it is very easy to avoid playing during training camp, and the moment they are done for the day, the crowds go home and the pay lot becomes free again.

Other Thoughts:

It's been over a year since the last review, so here you go.

If you're in St Joe, come on by, it's a fun course, with a lot of variety of shots, distances, and looks. I know I devoted a lot of words to the rough, but as long as you don't throw in there, it's a non-issue.

Missouri western 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 8, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Good variety as front 9 is technical and the back 9 is very open with a lot longer distances
Lots of ace and birdie potential on the front 9
Easy to navigate
Course is well maintained and grass is cut once a week
There are 3 benches on the front 9 but none on the much longer back 9

Cons:

No bathrooms except during football season and chiefs training camp
No concrete tee pads
Lots of posion ivy during spring/summer
Tee pad on hole 11 is dangerous and should be moved down
Very crowded with pedestrians during chiefs training camp. I avoid playing during open practices
Discs can easily get lost on holes 1-6 and 10-12

Other Thoughts:

This is my home course and its a nice course with variety. This course could easily be rated a 3-3.5 if they would have concrete tee pads and bathrooms. I appreciate the new baskets throughout the course and it's very easy to navigate as the course is divided on 2 sides. This is a fun course to play but it's also challenging esp on a windy day. The back 9 is more hilly but overall its a course that won't kill your arm or legs. Be careful playing during spring/summer as poison ivy is everywhere esp if you throw into the woods as discs are easily lost in the thick bushes and grass. Overall, its a good course thats fun to play and I'm glad this is my home course.

Watchout for walkers, joggers, and bikers before you throw

New Baskets 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 25, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

New baskets on the front 9 really helped this course out, now they match the newer back 9 holes. I'm new to the sport and this time of year works out good with all the leaves off the trees, due to the discs going into the woods. Grounds are still kept up really nice, like other reviews it still could use some concrete pads due to the rutting of the grounds. This course is just 5min. from my work so that's a big plus. Front 9 being short are good for newbie and old newbie like myself, so I can at least hit some birds on it. Navigation to next tee really easy. You can park and step out of your car tee #1 is close to play the front nine, and tee #10 is close to play the back.

Cons:

The back 9 are long and I don't really care for the blind shots over hills. Tees need some work or concrete installed. Woods and deep ravine on several holes will eat discs.

Other Thoughts:

With the new baskets this bumps this course up in rating.

Almost Maybe 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 8, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Clean course with nice turf. Easy to navigate. Front 9 has short and tight holes to work on short game. Though front 9 has mismatched baskets the back nine are mach 3s.

Cons:

This course could really benefit from concrete tee pads. Not that I need concrete but most tee areas are not level and worn unevenly. I never felt comfortable on any of the tees. Though the back 9 has much length 4 or 5 holes are up and over hills with blind baskets. I never got into an air it out groove.

Other Thoughts:

13 mi north in the town of Savanah is a 9 hole course with great bomber holes. As a consequence I will probably bypass St Joe and head to Duncan park in Savanah Mo to grip and rip.

Front 9=Accuracy, Back 9=Distance 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 8, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

The grounds were well maintained. Course flow was logical. There are benches at some of the holes on the front 9.
Uses elevation well.
Front 9 offers players the chance to run the chains.
Has both dog leg left and right holes.
Shorter and technical holes on the front 9 and longer more open holes on the back 9.

Cons:

Some of the tees on the front 9 are getting ruts.
Walking paths come into play on some holes so be aware before you throw.
Some of the baskets on the front 9 are single chain and spit outs could be possible.
The rough is rough and thorny at times so be careful.
Some baskets on the front 9 are close to the next tee.
Holes 8 and 9 might be difficult to play during football or soccer games.
The tee box area for 11 is awkward and a player could potentially twist an ankle.
No trash cans.
Wind will factor into your round on the back 9.
Tee markers could use the distances on them.
Long walk from 18's basket back to the parking lot.

Other Thoughts:

Being as this course was only a 9 hole course at one time the addition of the back 9 was a nice addition. One can work on shorter more technical shots on the front 9 and then go work on their long range driving game on the back 9. The back 9 plays uphill and downhill across a nice lightly wooded tract of land that most likely was going unused. You will get a good workout on the back 9 due to the elevation and the length of the holes themselves.
This is a pretty good college campus course. It offers players the opportunity to work on their overall game and there are lines to be shaped to score well.
If you are passing through or are in the area then hit this one up.

Short in the front, Long in the back! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 5, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Open fairways
The holes vary from right to left, varying your shot selection often
Most of the front 9 holes are short and make for a fun ace challenge
The back 9 is long, open, and tons of fun!
I especially like holes 11, 17, & 18

Cons:

Needs: Concrete tee pads, new baskets on the front 9, more beches, trash cans, and signs

Other Thoughts:

I didnt even like this course until it became an 18 hole course, and now its a course i play occasionally during the week. I've met several good players at this course. I hear they have a great league I've been meaning to play in.

Pros:

Fun course. The front 9 is a good mix of technical shots and the back 9 is where you can show off your arm.
Hole 1, 2, 3, 12, and 16 are all fun holes to me. 1 and 3 are good holes to try your forehand throw because the right bend at each. 12 and 16 are downhill and if you get a good drive you can shoot under par.

Cons:

Grass tee pads, especially for hole 11 because it's on a small, steep hill below a tree. You have to throw really low to avoid it and you have to watch your footing or you're falling down the hill.
Hole 17 is up hill and always seems to be against the wind could have been moved up 100-200 feet and it would still be the most difficult hole on the course.

Needs better signage 2+ years drive by

Pros:

- good variety of long/short & wooded/open holes
- 18 unique holes

Cons:

- difficult to navigate (signage on holes displays hole # only)
- only one set of tees
- no tee pads, just a small concrete marker

Other Thoughts:

Hole 17 is really tough when the wind is in your face. It is long and uphill.

Missouri Western 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 24, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-The course is now an 18 hole course!
-Two sides of the course with each helping a different style of player ex. technical then big arm
-The back 9 baskets are brand new dga's
-All 18 baskets have bright red number markers
-I love holes 12 and 16 both medium to long rhbh with both baskets being under trees makes a long drive have to be accurate instead of grip and rip.
-No baskets are really in the wide open except 13 and 18, each has the basket guarded... I like!

Cons:

-The teepads are natural and they need work. Some are not level and have tree roots growing through them. The back nine tees are not worn in yet
-11 and 18's tees dont make sense... behind trees
-The gravel on top of 8's hill is disc destroying territory.
-Lack of signage and visible tee markers
-Not one trashcan
-Single chained baskets sometimes spit the discs out, not the case on the back

Other Thoughts:

The course is on a dry campus so becareful drinking on the course. If the teepads were concrete and it had signage this would be a really good course. With the new 9 hopefully the University will add the little things to improve the course ex. trashcans and signs, maybe even just level the old natural pads. Watch your discs to the right of holes 1-4, it is a huge ditch with a creek at the bottom but to get to the creek you must pass through a jungle. Also to the left of 10-12 is really thick so watch rhbh.

Simple...too simple 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 21, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Tees are marked even if a little difficult to find. Baskets are all there, although not marked per hole. The kiosk at the beginning of the course has faded ink that, if you can read it, gives a decent idea of the layout of the course. There is decent use of existing trees to force some non-straight routes.

There is parking near the course, although it says it is permit parking, and playing it at 5pm on a Tuesday probably gave little risk of getting in trouble.

There is also a port-o-john near the kiosk.

The layout is average, and very short. Hole 3 plays around a right turn and down a hill and was a decent challenge, although I overdrove it with my wizard. The others are somewhat bland, with the exception of Hole 8, at almost 500 feet, up over a hill, and you have to watch out for construction equipment on the right.

Fun to play for a quick round, but sadly, there are no "memorable" holes for me.

Cons:

VERY basic. The layout is mostly flat with a couple holes utilizing some elevation change. I was able to drive all but 3 holes with my putter, it was so short.

Baskets are passable, and look to be DGA, but are single chain, and the tops seemed a little loose. They were kind of sketchy at catching a putt that had any zip on it.

There basically NO tees. There are numbered stones in the ground for a tee marker, but are not exactly easy to find. There are NO next tee signs, none of the baskets have hole numbers on them. The map on the kiosk requires a CSI magic light to be able to read, although I was able to gather enough off of it to play the course.

Other Thoughts:

My rating of a 1.5 is a reflection on the course being there an complete, but otherwise of no challenge or more than basic fun to play. Length plays a great role in this as I don't like to be able to drive a putter to the pin on 2/3 of the holes.

If you are in the area, stop by, but by no means should you go out of your way, unless you have a beginner to introduce to the sport like I did.

Easter Fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 12, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

It was in a nice, wooded hilly portion of the campus. It had some nice navigating through the trees. A few interesting holes and the ability to switch up and play different tee to hole combinations, although I found the creek bed that way.

Cons:

In one spot where a long drive was needed, you had to go around a fence for the football field. Any errant throw, and you have no way of retrieving your disc. Also, there were concrete benches near each basket, creating yet another obstacle to getting to the hole. The length is nowhere near 4200ft. I would guess no more than 2400, and that's a stretch.

Other Thoughts:

If you live or have relatives in St Joe, it's worth a visit, but not worth the drive for out-of-towners.
