Great Course for a Beginner 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 7, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

-There are nice concrete pads at each tee-off.
-The baskets are well numbered.
-Nice signs to tell you where to go.
-Nice elevation changes to make the course interesting.
-The fairways are longer than most in the city parks.

Cons:

-Came in an evening where there were no scorecards left in the box and the office was closed.
-You have to pay a $6 fee for a day pass. If you visit the state parks on a regular basis I would opt for the annual pass at $25.
-Very buggy as all the trees block the wind needed to blow them away.
-This course is in the picnic area so on a weekend, it is busy!
-The course needed to be mowed badly, but the campgrounds were nicely mowed. Don't know if it was an off day or if they like to keep the grass a little bit taller on this side of the park.
-Some of the grass was completely worn away near several of the baskets so it was mud from a recent rain.

Other Thoughts:

Some of the holes have you play around a shelter house and there is a picnic grill in the middle of one fairway. You have to watch it if other people are using the picnic area. On a weekday, I don't see this being a problem. There are no water hazards. It is wooded so you dodge trees through most of your playing. I do recommend this course to beginners like myself as this offers something new and different than the very short and flat fairways at city parks in the area. However, a map is a must as there are two baskets close by each other. With the longer fairways I saw the one and not the other. I ended up playing the wrong basket and didn't find out until I got close to it.

Pros:

-Concrete tees
-Good baskets
-Has a scorecard and map

Cons:

-Hole #9 has a tree growing over it
-There is no grass around some of the baskets

Other Thoughts:

This is a course with longer holes and many large trees. Not much for views because of all the trees, otherwise the park is clean and the camping is great. You must pay for a park pass to play this course.

Okay 9-Hole Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 25, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-In a fairly nice state park
-well kept up and very clean
-maps are provided, though not neccessary
-Many trees that could be considered an obstacle.
-Ace-ability - With the holes being super short in general, there is a lot of opportunities for that ace, and near misses and/or aces = fun.
-Concrete pads (the picture is old)

Cons:

-The course as a hole is super short, with only 1 mid-length hole
-few garbages (maybe only 1 by hole 1)
-minimal to no elevation challenges throughout the course
-Almost no shot shaping required. Stand at the box and look straight and you will see the pin on every hole.

Other Thoughts:

In general this is a nice park with other amenities present. The course is immaculate. I was camping in the park and had to pay the $6 park fee regardless, however I would never recommend someone coming to this park strictly to play the course for $6. Without slamming it, it is a run of the mill 9-hole out in the middle of nowhere that cost more than the top courses in the country. Flat out don't waste your time unless you have a weekend you want to camp out in a great park. I think the guys who rated this course very good had to be smokin some good stuff. When i rate the course i do not count the ammenities of the rest of the park into my rating, strictly the course. While on this course you will not see the lakes, the natural prairies, the canoers, the beach goers or the campers cooking up their food. As far as scenery you will see trees and the road that surounds the course.

Pros:

Great Location! Beautiful State Park that offers a nice get-away in Rural South Dakota.....Nice Tee Pads with Good Baskets to Match....The course seems to have a Tourist scene with regular players that fill the void.....Great elevation and Technical diversity.

Cons:

No True Water Hazards (which may be a Plus to some)....Also none of the Holes have Marked DIstances or Pin Locations! Not a huge downer but isn't ideal!

Other Thoughts:

The Old Trees and Beautiful State Park Surroundings are what make this course! It has a Nice Atmosphere and is decently Challenging..........If you play all Sidewalks/Roadways OB, the course can challenge a Pro....But keep in mind there are no real Water Hazards, so the challenge is limited......But I would highly recommend this course to any player, especially considering it's obscure location and Mature Trees that pose a real challenge.......Overall a Fun Course!......If you are Traveling North on I-29 this course is a must stop!

Middle of nowhere but fun 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 18, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Nice tee boxes that are numbered.
-Good flow of course, map isn't needed to find next tee or which basket to aim at ever.
-Great scenery; under giant oak trees and surrounded by lakes.
-Very quiet place in rural SD. You won't be disturbed here. This part of the park is only for disc golfing.
-Nice baskets that catch well. Are also numbered.
-Hard to lose a disc.
-Many other things to do in this park.
-Good variation of distances.
-Some good ace and deuce chances but if you play it wrong they can turn
into 4s and 5s.
-The course is probably never crowded.
-Can borrow discs from the main office.
-Contrary to the pictures, there are large concrete pads

Cons:

-Could use a little more shot variety.
-Not close to anything, a 20 minute drive from Brookings which is the nearest city of any real size.
-Costs 6 dollars for a car. Not too expensive and definitely worth the money if you make an afternoon or day of it.
-Most holes are driveable in one.
-Watch out for bugs and poison ivy!

Other Thoughts:

When you get in the park keep driving til you get all the way to the end of it. The course is out by the Picnic shelter and beach.

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 7, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-BEAUTIFUL wooded course, with massive oak trees covering the majority of it.
-Plenty of elevation changes.
-Fairly technical course due to the presence of many trees.
-Easy to navigate.
-Not usually crowded.

Cons:

-Short; only 9 holes.
-Signage could be improved.

Other Thoughts:

-You must pay $5 or so to enter since this course is in a state park. However, it is well worth it if you bring in a carload of friends. Also, there are many hiking trails, decent fishing, a swimming beach, and camping. Perfect for a cheap weekend getaway!
