A nice little course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 6, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good use of a small, urban park. The first holes play along the creek and three holes use a sled hill.

Cons:

Hole 6 is dead along the creek with lots of trees. It looked impossible so I skipped it. The holes tended to be short (200 feet) and open.

Other Thoughts:

I assume you could deuce the majority of these holes if you played it regularly.

Time Flies Like An Arrow 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 22, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

(2.084 Rating) A small park style course with a big hill and a bunch of water.
- ELEVATION - I played all three Oshkosh 18 hole courses in the same day. The biggest elevation play in Oshkosh by far, is Hole (16) here. I think it plays 40 feet down from the top of the hill. Being able to chuck a disc 400 feet to the basket will be a thrill for those that max out at 300 feet. It was personally my favorite throw on the course and I chucked more than one.
- TEES - Really great tees, which was something that I wasn't expecting. 6 feet by 12 feet with a foul line extension. Every surface was in great condition. It made me wonder how they could put so much time and money into one aspect, but then they had no money for cheaper items like benches, signage or alternate basket locations. Perhaps they are coming next.
- ACEABILITY - Players are five times more likely to ace here than a normal course. A handful of shots are under 200 feet and another handful of obstacle free shots are in the low 200s. I'd be willing to bet that regulars here rack of multiple aces a year.
- QUICK PLAY - I blew through this course in 45 minutes. Figure a four-sum in an hour and a half. Very few walks walk between holes are over a 100 feet and searching will be limited to trying to retrieve one from Sawyer Creek.
- NAVIGATION - OK. A photo of the course map should be able to get all players through the course near seamlessly. For those that didn't take a photo and don't have some other map source, it could get interesting. No directional cues on the layout other than the placard above the basket indicating direction. Tee signage is just a numbered post.

Cons:

Too much course in too little space.
- MISSING BASKETS - There were three missing baskets during my Thanksgiving round, holes (7), (11) and (13). On (7) I threw figuring perhaps the basket was tucked in the distance tall grass. But as I got to my disc, I noticed a worn patch of grass about 40 feet ahead. Sure enough, as I got even closer, I found a pole hole. From reading the course description, I guess it's a winter removal thing, but why November?
- DESIGN - Trying to squeeze 18 holes into this space causes lots of problems. I would agree with another reviewer that this may have been better as a 9 hole course. Tees and baskets are too close to each other in numerous instances. Ball field fences and a water park fence are in play. I wish the other side of the river was used. Perhaps the designer was not allowed to go over there. Another thing regarding the design is the shortness and amount of water. Many higher skilled players probably wont like this set-up due to the length, while newer players won't like the amount water. There is going be a small niche of players that this layout will appeal to.
- NATURAL BEAUTY - The shots along the river are all nice plays, as well as the top of the hill throw on (16). After these elements however, the course is kind-of blah. Way too many featureless shots. Other park amenities are in view just about the whole time. The best beauty in the park is on the other side of the river where no holes exist.
- CHARACTER - Other than excellent tees and adequate baskets, the other common adds are not present. The only tee seating is on the first hole. There's a community board with no info, other than the course map. As stated above, signage on the course is limited to a wood post with number. I saw some faded sharpie distances on a few posts. There are no alternate baskets, tees or practice basket.
- LACK OF CHALLENGE - I didn't play well but I attribute that to 25 degree temps and 10 to 15 mph winds. Other than water on 6 of the first 9 holes there is nothing to challenge a skilled player. I think an 850 rated player should average 1 or 2 down.
- BEGINNER FRIENDLY - Despite the lower than normal difficultly level, this course is not beginner friendly. I'd personally be short at least one disc and perhaps a second had the creek not been iced over.
- UNIQUENESS - Honestly not too bad. As noted already, a big hill and water plays. However, too many open shots. I counted 9 tee shots without a tree in play. Players that like shot shaping woods plays, won't like this course.
- LOOSE DISC OPPS - I skipped one off the ice on (3) back into play and also clipped some heavy overgrowth on (6) sending it to the middle of the creek where I eventually found a long enough stick to grab it off the ice. Players that aren't cautious or are inaccurate will lose plastic.

Other Thoughts:

A quick little 18 hole course. I'm sure this course has a local following, but outside of that, there is no reason to head here unless you are trying to bag courses. I would advise beginners to stay away from this course as there is just too much water and they will likely lose all their discs.

Beginner Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 31, 2018 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The course has a city parking lot located next to it, this is mostly for the little league fields that are in the park. The first hole is located near a billboard for the course and has a map on it that lists all of the holes, designed shots, and the distances from pad to pin. The pads are all made of concrete and have an arrow at the top of them pointing you towards the where the pin is. Each hole has dga mach 3 baskets, for the most part they are in good repair. Most of the tee pads for the next pin are located near each of the previous baskets. Otherwise they are really easy to spot since the course plays through and open field park. The course loops around and up a hill back to the parking lot at the start. This course would be nice to take a beginner to to play since most of the holes are literally straight forward and don't require finesse shots.

Cons:

This course is very monotonous. All of the holes are literally straight ahead and have almost no obstacles in front of them (except holes 4 and 6, 6 poses at least a decent challenge and 4 is a 114 ft par 3 many aces have been recorded from people unloading their bag on it). The tees have no signage on them except for the indication of what hole number it is, no distance, no map, and no par. All of the holes play through a wide open field that has no obstacles except for the occasional light post or stray tree. The biggest issue I have with each of the holes is the 4ft radius of concrete that is around each of the pins. Park jobs are nearly impossible on these holes because the concrete causes the disc to skip away and cause unnecessary damage to it. They also remove pins 7,11,13 due to them being positioned on a hill that kids like to sled down.

Other Thoughts:

Improvement on this course would be difficult since it is in a small city park. I'm actually surprised that there is a course even here. Legitimate tee signs would be a welcome sight on each of the tee pads. Actually developing some sort of rough on the edge of the fairways of each of the holes would be nice, as it stands right now the entire park is an open field void of tall grass or the occasional tree. Hole 14 & 18 plays way to close to the little league diamonds and a careful shot is required to play these holes so that the stray disc doesn't injure anyone. Creating alternate pin positions for 7,11,13 would be nice to see for winter play of the course so that everyone can fully enjoy the park. Eliminating the unnecessary pile of concrete under the basket would also be nice and they could have saved money from all of that to put in tee signs for each of the tee pads. There's really no stand out hole at this course they are all fairly beginner friendly, so taking a new person here until they are comfortable would be nice but this is not a destination course.

I like it 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 28, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Nice Baskets - Nice Tee Pads - They Point Toward the Basket - Not Crowded - Huge Hill Plays Up and Down - Couple Wide Open Bomb Throw Opportunities - Ace Opportunities - Well Maintained Grass - Easy Navigation

Front Nine - Lots of looks at birdie (Tend to shoot Under Par)

Back Nine - No Water, Lots of Long Bomb Throws ( Bit tougher for me... I Tend to shoot about 1 over Par)

Cons:

Water - Baskets Very Close to the Water - No Map or Yardage Markers at Tee Boxes... Only a Wooden Post with the Tee Number - No Scorecards Available - Water is too Deep to retrieve Wet Discs - Could use more Woods

Front Nine - Lots of Water - Risky decisions to be made

Back Nine - Not much for obstacles

Other Thoughts:

Most of the reviews for this course were made back in the day... the course is way different now. Baskets are ordered Properly Now, so there should be no confusion.

If you're new to the course, there is a good chance you throw a disc into the pool or the stream... I like the Course... 1 is a mid-range throw right along the water, 2 it a throw over the water onto a small peninsula. Both 1 and two are good birdie looks. Three I tend to throw a mid-rage disc, because the farther you throw, the more narrow the fairway becomes, with water on both sides, but a good throw will leave for an easy birdie... Four is short ace opportunity... 5.), I throw my putter now, because I threw my favorite mid-range disc, right over the basket and into the water. 6.) is over the water, or take the long way around... 7.) is up a medium sized hill, 8.) comes back down toward the water, long and left can get wet... 9.) anything left gets wet. 10.) Anything left goes over the fence of Pollock Pool... 11.) Far left could still go over fence.. 12.) One Tree between you and the Basket. 13.) The basket is on a steep hill, if you're disc rolls like a coin after bouncing your putt off the basket, it could go a long way. 14.) Wide Open, a bad shot left could go over the fence and into the baseball field.
15.) Goes up a Huge Hill, a little over 300 feet, but plays much longer. 16.) Comes back down the hill over 400 feet, no obstacles, nothing but space and opportunity... let 'er rip... 17.) is wide open 18.) goes right along the outfield fence, so anything far left will go over...

Overall, I like this course... Best Ive shot on the Front Nine is -5 under par... Best Ive shot on the back is Even...

Must've been really bad if this is better 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 3, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is set right along a creek for the first few holes adding a great risk factor with errant shots. They have 4x4's with the hole number serving as tee signs. They also have very nice level and grippy tee pads on every hole. These are very nice and actually point toward the basket you are shooting toward. There aren't many trees here but the water and a solid amount of elevation make for some decent challenge. The baskets are Mach 3's that are all in pretty decent shape and catch fine. The course is pretty easy to follow from hole to hole. They do a good job using the small sledding hill for a few shots going up and down. The course seemed well mowed and maintained and pretty clean. There is ample parking here too.

Cons:

My number one problem at this course is that they have the numbered baskets all in the wrong spots. This is just really frustrating since they have the NUMBERS ON THEM!! This makes it very confusing for first time players. Also, they have about 5' circles of concrete underneath each basket. Why? I have no idea and have never seen this anywhere else and hope not to again. I can see this being very frustrating with a long skip into the creek with what would otherwise be a nice shot. I can imagine this course may get busy in summer months and with some of the close tees and baskets could also be dangerous. Besides the first few holes along the creek, the rest are wide open and very bland and unexciting.

Other Thoughts:

If this course is upgraded so nicely from what it was it really must've been a dump before. with that being said, this isn't a terrible course by any means. It's just a decent, pretty average course as it is now. Nothing to go out of your way to play but an OK play as is.

Renewed Hope 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 19, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Good use of Tree lines, some good uses of the waterways, excellent baskets, excellent tee pads, good use of elevation where available.

Cons:

Some incorrect hole layouts cause water to come into play where it shouldn't.

The parks department initially labeled the holes with #1 starting where the skate park is rather than the traditional start by the bulletin board.

Multi-use park areas can at time get congested, but this is expected in a park next to a high school and in the middle of town.

Other Thoughts:

As an Oshkosh native it is not exaggeration to say I have played this course at least 300 times. For years it was nothing more than a place to chase an ace (rhyme very much intended) while weighing your disc's value in your mind because the water was always in play.

Hole 7 traditionally stood on an angle from some skater punks who thought it was a good idea to stomp it down, and course management always stopped at a light breezing through the fairways with a mower.

However in the last few years the parks department has done an AMAZING job restoring this course to a formidable stop and play course. With 1-2 holes that can challenge even seasoned vets and interesting lines involving the large old trees left untouched by the creek restoration project the course can be a fun venture for any level of player.

On the subject of the water holes, yes some are admittedly poorly designed however i play this course 3 times a week with the newest of am players and in an entire season have lost but 2 discs. The reason for my good numbers is due to the fact i have 4 innova dx dragons in my trunk. These discs not only fit into the arm speed of your average beginner well but also are usually easily grabbed with a branch from shore without even getting a single toe wet. Should a course require a floating disc to safely play it? no. However a 5$ used dragon is a small price for me to pay to enjoy this well transformed old course.

Would be better as nine... 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 3, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

18 holes in Red Arrow Park.

DGA baskets, all in decent repair. More below on these.

Nice, grippy concrete tee pads. The ends were somewhat arrow shaped, which helped quite a bit finding what basket to throw to.

A few interesting shots here, helped by a river that winds around the edge of the northern side of the park, and a former garbage dump hill on the south end.

Navigation was surprisingly intuitive, especially since it's mostly just baskets out in an open field.

Cons:

This is mostly a short, open course. More than half the holes are basically open field shots in the 150-250' range. Hole 4 felt like it was about 100'.

No tee signs. Hole numbers are posted on 6' 4x4 posts, with no other information about the holes.

The baskets are incorrectly numbered. It's not hard to figure out where to throw, but it's a bit confusing at first. Also, the baskets are mounted in the center of 6' diameter circular concrete slabs, which is a huge bummer if you actually throw accurate shots. I had one such shot (hole 3), in which I hit the concrete under the basket and had the disc skip up and out into the river. Just a horrible idea, and completely unnecessary.

A couple of the holes play VERY close to a baseball diamond. Hole 18's line basically curves a couple feet from the outfield fence. Hole 13 also could be an issue if a drive got away from somebody.

Other Thoughts:

This could be a really cool 9 holer, but instead is a pretty bland 18 hole course. Holes 3, 6, 14, and 15 are decent, but everything else is just a basket in a field, with very minimal (if any) obstacles.

There's also a nice looking bulletin board at the beginning of the course...with nothing in it. A course map would be great.

The park also has baseball diamonds, bathrooms, and a city pool in it. Decent place to take the kids to swim, while you disc.

While I wouldn't go out of my way to play it again, I have to imagine some cool safari holes could be worked out here. Don't go out of your way, but if you happen to be next door, you could do worse.

Pros:

-It's close to home.
-You can throw from the top of a large hill (known as garbage hill due to it being an old garbage dump) to practice your distance shots.

Cons:

-CONFUSING. There seems to be no order to the first 6 holes or so. Most of the time there was trying to figure out where the next tee was, or the next basket. Had to skip several holes due to not knowing where they were or which was next.
No map layout that I saw.
The tee is more or less a 15 inch wide rut in the ground. Sometimes it had a marker to signify that is where the tee was.

Other Thoughts:

At the end of this course, I didn't feel like I had any fun. The reason I disc is to enjoy myself, and I didn't with this course. If you can walk or ride bike to this course, then it might be worth it.

Pros:

April 26, 2014

I feel compelled to update my review on this course because it has changed so drastically in the last year or so.

This course used to be a beautiful, challenging, fun, and natural feeling one. It is none of those things anymore. It's a barren, hazardous, frustrating, treeless tragedy.

It's really a sad thing...

While the easily forgettable later holes remain for the most part unchanged, the first nine or so appear to have been created by a blind man who thinks disc golf is a water sport. You WILL water your discs. It's not even justifiable to have some of the holes designed as they are with the room available. But no problem, right? Just hop in the water and get it back... But wait, the once friendly, shallow creek has been steeply dredged so your disc is not only invisible to the eye, but also far beyond the reach of even the longest of toes.

I've been playing this course for over seven years and found it to be an absolutely wonderful asset to Oshkosh for families, friends, and individuals who love the sport for exercise or the beautiful aesthetic of natural elements once found there.

I feel like a piece of my heart has been bulldozed and replaced with a parking lot. Look at the pictures to see how absolutely beautiful this course was. It looks nothing like that anymore, so sad. Sorry, Red... I'll keep the better memories of you and move on to other courses.

July 20, 2009
As a local with a play-count on this course of probably near 100 rounds I can define every hole, for what it's worth with pros and cons for each. However, as a whole the pros are a decent variety of holes to throw, it'll get you throwin' in ways you don't normally toss. You'll need your very short game (hold 2 & 5) and long drives on this one, you'll be able to test your versatility as a disc golfer. First 9 are an exciting play.

Cons:

July 20, 2009
Extensive amount of Hamm's Premium Light and Milwaukee's Best Ice 16 ounce cans littering certain tee's. Hole 15 doesn't have a pole to write your name on when you ace it.. and I'm often asked "where is hole 1?".

Other Thoughts:

July 20, 2009
I play this course nearly every day. Feel free to tag the pole when you ace, it'll make you feel like you're great at disking after a few rounds here. Great for locals obviously, if you're from out of town you may enjoy the county park course more.
And c'mon, you may water your disc on hole 3,4,7,10 even 11; the water's dirty but shallow. Go dumpster divin'!

Most Diverse Course I have ever played 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 20, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

1) This course has the ultimate in variety. It has a handful of really short technical holes through tight wooded areas. It has a couple long open holes. It has elevation up, down and on baskets on or near slopes. It has some wooded holes, a couple with some length too!

2) Although it is called "Garbage Hill" the sledding hill adds some character to 3 or 4 holes on what would otherwise be a very level park.

3) Tight wooded holes add some character and give you some risk/reward shots.

4) All tees have a post by them, but some of the signs are missing.

Cons:

1) Maintenance is lacking. It is obvious this course gets a lot of use or has in the past with little to no maintenance.

2)Tees are rutted out. All paths in the wooded areas are wore down to clay soil.
3) Underbrush is evident on some holes, but that really defines the fairways on the technical holes.

4) Trash is really evident along the river, which happens on all rivers, but regardless takes away from the course.

5) Course could use some signage directing which hole is next in a couple places. The design took the smallest amount of space and made the most of it, but that can lead to some confusing routing!

Other Thoughts:

I give this course a 3 overall in technicality, variety, and fun factor. The maintenance takes the overall grade down to a 2 though. That means the maintenance would be rated 0. It is by far the worst course I have played in terms of tee areas, signage, garbage, and overall turf quality.

I am glad I played this course, but if maintenance isn't improved I might not ever go back. Although if I wanted a variety or practice I would certainly play this course again.
