Mohawk Park – 36 Holes of Awesome! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 27, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

I played five courses in Tulsa as part of the 2014 Tim Selinske US Masters Championships. The Redhawk course was in excellent condition for the event. OB areas along the creek were well marked. There was also additional OB string installed on the 820 foot Par 5, Hole 13.

I used bullet points if you don't want to read the entire review

Mohawk Park
36 holes of disc golf in a huge park located north of the Tulsa Airport. The recently updated Par 60 Redhawk is in the more wide open part of the park located among the mowed grass and mature trees. A small creek borders three of the holes. It is a great course for players of all abilities, from advanced level to beginners and families. The other 18 hole dis golf course on site is called Blackhawk/Whitehawk. Blackhawk course is an advanced level course that is located in the wooded area of the park and is not recommended for beginning players.

Front Nine
Excellent for newer players. The Par 27 front nine of Redhawk is located in the more open park area among the mature trees. There are no rough areas and no water in play. Holes play out and back from the first tee and the parking area. These holes are very straightforward. The mature trees provide great shade as well as challenges. The wind can also come into play. Holes 1,3 and 4 have changed since the 2006 Am Worlds adding more distance and challenge to the front 9.

Back Nine
More advanced players will want to try the longer and more challenging Par 31 back nine. The ultimate challenge on the back nine presents itself on Holes 13 - 16. The Par 5 holes 13 and 14 are 850 feet and 868 feet. There are plenty of OB opportunities on these two narrow fairways. Water is also in play along the entire right side of holes 14, 15 & 16. Depending on how high the creek may be, it is possible to lose discs on these holes. Some woods and deep rough can be found along Holes 10 & 11. Of course the wind is an ever present factor on Redhawk.

Customized Wraps on the Baskets
Every basket (except Hole 11) had a custom wrap over the traditional yellow Discatcher band. Each wrap had awesome graphics featuring a Red Hawk. The baskets displayed the hole number on the front and back. The wraps honor the Tulsa Disc Sports Association (TDSA), the 2014 Tim Selinske US Masters and the 2006 PDGA Am Worlds.

Options
This course is designed as two nine hole loops . You can choose to play the front nine and loop back to parking area and call it a day. You also have the option to start or finish your round on the longer Park 31 back nine, 10 - 18. From the same parking area, you could take a short walk over to the Blackhawk/Whitehawk course. If you are up to the challenge you could play all 36 holes at Mohawk Park in one day. I would start with the Red Course and hone your skills out in the open before heading into the more technical Blackhawk/Whitehawk Course.

Extra Long Holes
The Par 5 holes 13 and 14 are each over 850 feet long. These are two of the most challenging holes at Mohawk Park, not only for the distance, but these are more open and subject to high winds. Both holes have narrow fairways that are bounded on both sides by OB. 14 has an OB creek all along the right to add to the difficulty. If you are not quite up to the challenge, you can skip these two hole. After you finish Hole 12 take a shortcut straight across the road to the tee for Hole 15.

Level Concrete Tees
Every hole had an ample concrete tees. Tees were well maintained and even with the surrounding area. Tee areas were clean and well maintained. There was no litter and no graffiti on the course.

Signs
There were well placed tee signs on every hole. The graphics were up-to-date and included OB information. Signs also included directions directions to the next tee. As long as you can find the first tee, you do not need a map to play this course.

Wind in Play
This course is in the more open area of the park and the winds can and will come into play. Especially on the Par 5 Hole 13. The persistent winds and longer, more open holes on the Redhawk course provide an interesting alternative to the narrow wooded fairways on the Blackhawk course. Choose your Poison.

Kids and Strollers
The front 9 are ideal for bringing along kids and babes in strollers. If kids can walk, they could even play along on this straightforward front 9. Redhawk is in the grassy part of the park with mature trees and it is very level. Unlike the woods, there are not many bugs or ticks. While the back 9 at Redhawk is longer, it would still be easy enough to bring along kids in strollers. Except for the longer Holes 13 and 14, kids could play the back nine as well. There is a creek all along holes 14- 16. There is a nice modern playground near Holes 17 & 18. There are lots of restrooms in the park. I would not recommend bringing kids to the Blackhawk course.

Airport
The course is at the north end of an active airport runway. Jets and planes do fly directly overhead on Hole 13 while landing or taking off. I thought it was neat to see the jets so close. Of course, they can be very noisy.

Restrooms
There were several restrooms with running water as well as a bunch of portables on the courses. I can't recall playing on a course with more facilities.

Possible Fee
In summer, there can be a fee to enter the park. It is well worth the cost for the opportunity to play 36 holes of disc golf.

Cons:

What is not to like?
It is difficult to find a con. This is one of two 18 hole courses in one park. It is a more open course option for newer players, families and folks that don't want to play the woody Blackhawk/Whitehawk course.

Picnics
Other park users could spill over on the course on crowded days.

Variety
The holes are mostly wide open and offer little variation. The park is flat with no elevation changes.

Disc Loss
It is possible to lose plastic on the back nine water holes 14, 15, & 16.

Noise
The planes and jets fly directly overhead while landing or taking off. It can get very noisy at times.

Poison Ivy
It is plentiful on Blackhawk/Whitehawk. There may be some poison ivy on Redhawk if you happen to actually find some rough.

Benches
This could be an area with room for improvement.

Other Thoughts:

Mohawk Park and Tulsa Zoo
This giant park is the best bet for disc golf in Tulsa. The Blackhawk/Redhawk set of courses offers 36 holes of disc golf and something for every level of player. From the super beginner friendly front nine at Redhawk to the super challenging back nine at Blackhawk there is a something here for players of all skill levels. The Tulsa Zoo is right next door. You park in the same area as Blackhawk/Whitehawk so all 36 holes start in one place.

It's all right here.
You park in the same area as the Blackhawk course, so all 36 holes start in the same area. The Redhawk course offers two nine hole loops. You could play Redhawk, Blackhawk (and Whitehawk) if you are up to the 54 hole challenge.

Choose One - Whitehawk
If I could only play one course at Mohawk Park, I would play the Whitehawk Course layout on Blackhawk. I would rate Blackhawk higher if it was all about the challenge, but BH has issues. Beginners should NOT play Blackhawk/Whitehawk.

2014 US Masters
I played the courses while attending this PDGA Major event. The tournament was hosted by the Tulsa Disc Sports Association. The TDSA did an awesome job preparing all five courses for the event. Tulsa was a friendly and welcoming community. I enjoyed my stay and I was thankful for the opportunity to play disc golf in Tulsa.

TDSA
Tulsa Disc Sports Assoc is a hardworking club that is responsible for the new basket wraps and updated tee signs. it is obvious they are helping to improve and maintain these courses. The Mohawk Park courses are here as a direct result of the volunteer efforts of the members the TDSA. If you are a local player, you should check out the events they offer. They welcome players of all ages and abilities.

Photos
The photos will be updated to show how the course has matured, the concrete tees and the new custom Discatcher target wraps.

Ratings
The fact there are two 18 hole courses at Mohawk Park is worth a 5 disc rating. The overall challenge of this course is close to a 5, especially if you add in the wind. It is an excellent course for players of all levels from pros to beginners and families. The quality of the tees and signs and overall condition of the course were excellent However, the course doesn't offer a lot of variety or any elevation challenges. I give Redhawk a 4 since it is a top-notch course for a wide range of players in an excellent park.

Get those birds early! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 20, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is in a very nice park setting. It is really nice to have this and Blackhawk in the same park. If you only play in the park these 2 courses are in, you will still be a very good player. Redhawk has great hole variety. The front 9 are the shorter holes, but still with plenty of trees in the way to make shot shaping fun. You need to get your birdies on this half of the course to set yourself up for the longer half. The back 9 gets a lot longer. There are several par 4's and a par 5. There are several shots that run along a creek that comes out of the Tulsa Zoo, which is also in the same park. With these long holes next to the creek and a road, you have a smaller margin of error. If you play this course a lot, you will be a master of the low shot. With lots of mature trees, you often have to throw your disc on a very low line.

Cons:

This course doesn't offer as much technique as one might like. While there are trees, there is plenty of room to go around them all. Because of this, a lot of holes feel too open. Hole 13's basket was missing. This was the par 5 hole, so we played to a tree instead. The course flowed fairly well, but you don't get that feeling of being really excited for the next hole that you often feel at excellent courses.

Other Thoughts:

This was a quality course, and I'm glad I played it on my way down from Kansas City. However this wasn't the best course in the park. If you only have time for one course and you are by this park, play Blackhawk.

Pros:

Nice challenge for advanced players. Plenty of distance and technical shots. Well kept park with decent tee signs and direction to next tee pad.

Cons:

Can be crowded with people enjoying the park. Can lose a disc easily in a NASTY creek that is in play on the back 9.

Other Thoughts:

One of the best courses in Tulsa if you're looking for a challenge. Couple this with Blackhawk in same park and you've got an awesome disc golf couplet.

Redhawk 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 5, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Big Arm course. Well maintained and fun to play if you can crush it 400+. Nowhere else in Tulsa can you find 2 back-to-back 800+ holes.

Cons:

Very open - no real technical shots. Very flat. Does not drain very well. Usually you won't end up in the creek, but if you happen to - you won't find your disc. I'm not sure of the zoo's schedule but on some days they make you pay to park at the park entrance.

Other Thoughts:

Good course - great complement to its more wooded sister course Blackhawk. If you like open bombers Redhawk is a pretty decent course. If you like tight wooded lines than you NEED to play Blackhawk.

Very good course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 21, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Good variety in holes. Playable for beginners but still provides challenge for better players.

Front nine is not especially challenging as every hole is definitely a possible birdie, but there is enough strategic tree placement to still make things interesting.

Back nine provides a lot more challenge with one hole cutting through fairly dense forest, a couple really long holes (800+ feet), and a few that weave along a deep creek.

It's pretty hard to lose a disc out here unless you throw an errant shot into the creek, in which case it's gone.

The course itself is in great shape. Excellent concrete tee pads, clear signs that show distance and a simple map, although one or two of those have somehow been uprooted and are leaning against a nearby tree. The grass is generally mowed very well and it's easy to navigate and find your way.

Cons:

Basically no elevation change at all, but it's hard to find much of that in eastern Oklahoma.

There can be a decent amount of people out in the park when the weather is nice, but the course generally wraps around the recreation areas so traffic is not too bad.

I've seen a decent amount of broken glass in places along the course.

Other Thoughts:

This is a very fun course overall, probably my favorite in the Tulsa area. It provides good variety without requiring exceptional skill and always offers a pleasant time.

Lighter Mohawk 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 16, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The course amenities are in good condition overall, long tee pads that are textured well, accurate and descriptive tee signs, and good discatcher baskets with painted rungs towards the next tee. The course is well groomed often as well. Many people don't like the difference between the front 9 and back 9 but I enjoy it because it focuses your mental game...you must get your birdies while you can (and there are some available on the back9) and fight for your pars on the tough holes. If you play lazy on the front 9, you will get spanked on the back 9.

Cons:

As with most OK courses, this is quite flat. The creek is basically the only elevation, and you don't want to get in there. Also, on popular days, the course can be overrun with picnic-ers, etc who have no idea that they're in the middle of a course. Also again, during the warmer months on the weekends, there is a $2 parking fee for the park.

Other Thoughts:

The course plays quite enjoyably in my opinion, continually getting more and more difficult as you trek further in, culminating with potentially the most difficult hole to 3 in Tulsa, hole 14. It begins to cool down from there generally. If you have to pick between this one and blackhawk and redhawk, play black, but do your best to make time for both of them, red will challenge your game.

Redhawk... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 26, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Course is located in a fairly open part of Mohawk park, which has another course, Blackhawk, that is just across the road from Redhawk. The holes seem fairly open, but the trees are very well placed and block some of the most obvious lines. Low branches provide a major challenge, especially in the winter when you can't see all of the branches. The mixture of holes is very good. Plenty of each kind of shot. The variety in distances is good too. There are 200 ft. ace runs and 800 ft. open bombers. The creek and woods come into play a few times. Hole 16 is very cool. You tee off and the creek is curves in front of you the veers off left and comes back behind the hole.

All of the tee pads were very nice. Big enough and textured. Tee signs were very good when they were there. The maps were very accurate and looked nice. Navigation here might be the best I've seen anywhere. Mostly because part of the basket was painted to show which direction the next tee was.

Cons:

The front nine was not very challenging. Most holes were between 200 and 350 ft. The front nine was also very repetitive. The trees do help make it more challenging, but it's just too easy. I think the Creek could have been used more. A few of the signs were missing. Number 13 is really confusing if you don't realize it's 820 ft. and that's one of the holes without a sign.

Other Thoughts:

I really enjoyed this course. It wasn't very challenging, but it's an excellent complement to Blackhawk. The front nine would be a good place to bring a newer player. Out of the two courses at Mohawk, I would recommend playing Redhawk first because it's not as good as Blackhawk.

Flat but very fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 14, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Course is well groomed, Tulsa Zoo next door, pavilions.

All concrete tee pads, plenty of length and in great shape. DiscCatcher baskets in good condition. Tee signs are present and are adequate to navigate the course. It is very easy to find the next tee from the basket, as a bar on the bottom of each basket in the direction of the next tee is painted red.

The course has a pretty open layout, lots of mature trees to throw around, especially on the front 9. The front and back 9 seem to have different, very distinct personalities.

My memorable holes:
4 - Tough shot with lots of big trees guarding the basket, and no clear line, but with several workable opportunities. I put a dent in several trees on this one.
6 - Right off the tee, you have to stay left of a mando tree on the right of the fairway with some low-hanging branches. I was first tempted to tomahawk over them, but a well thrown low shot got right up to the basket.
11 - Throw from the open to some semi-dense woods, very neat looking shot, requiring precision to get a great lie.
13, 14, 15 - All tolled, 2183 feet of holy %$&# (you do realize that is just shy of half a mile right?), which is about a third of the length of an average 18 hole course. OB on 13 is rough, if you fade out early, trouble. 14 and 15 have OB creek on left, besides the penalty, you do NOT want to go in there.

The back nine is quite a challenge, I really enjoyed the difficulty of some of the latter holes.
latter latter.

Cons:

As I said above, the front and back 9 have very different personalities. The front is the con, very repetitive, and an average player should be about to deuce two-thirds of them. Only a couple holes that somewhat posed a threat.

The entire course has almost no elevation change, but that is to be expected in this area, although I think that does detract from the overall DG experience.

Other Thoughts:

My rating of 3.5 is up from what would have been a 3 because I simply really enjoyed the back 9. It was a welcome relief after playing 1-9. The park is very nice, and the day I went you didn't have to pay admission (per the sign in the guard shack at the entrance).

Also very handy location since it is right next to the airport. If that weren't enough, there is an awesome woods-type course on-site (right across the road!) that you can hit up at the same time, Blackhawk. I do highly suggest playing Redhawk first, so that you build up to the better course, rather than playing the better one first and perhaps are let down by playing the lesser afterward.

If you are in the Tulsa area, there is not excuse not to experience this course, and it's big brother too!

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 4, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Tee pads and signs are great and course is part of a large park with the much more difficult Blackhawk course next door. Mostly open and flat with a couple of very long holes this course is a good course for less experienced players to work on thier game without too much fear of losing a disc while still presenting enough challenge to make it fun. Higher level players will likely find this course a little on the mild side.

Cons:

Only real con would be that the only real difficulty on the course is a couple of long holes in the 800' range. They are open so a long arm can just bomb them. A couple of holes had standing water/mud in the fairway and it appears that this could be normal in the spring months. I played without having to pay for entrance to the park but that is a possibility on weekends/holidays.

Other Thoughts:

Overall I enjoyed the course. It's not terribly challenging but it has good pads, signs and baskets and offers a significantly different experience than the much more challenging Blackhawk course next door.

The homlier Mohawk sister, but still a decent play 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 3, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Good intermediate to advanced level course at almost 7000', but lesser skilled players can still enjoy many of the holes without getting worn out or risk losing their discs (they should avoid 13-16, which advanced players will like). As long as you don't go OB, errant shots can be recovered from. Signage is good and very descriptive, and the course flows very logically. Painted radials on the baskets lead you to the next tee.

Cons:

Flat as a pancake. I mean incredibly flat. It does not dissipate water well. After a heavy rain there is absoultely nowhere for it to go, so it goes...nowhere. You have to pay to get into Mohawk Park on certain days, and those will probably be the days the park is crowded with non-players. I kind of wish Tulsa parks would try to get some of the non-DG amenities away from the course considering how huge this park is.

Other Thoughts:

This would be an awesome course in most towns if it was on its own, but since it has an incredible sister course next to it, Redhawk probably gets demerited a little more than it deserves. Compared to Blackhawk, this is more your standard fare open park golf, plenty of which can be found in Tulsa, albeit with two 800+ holes. Early or weekday play recommended. Again, not as impressive as the black course, but if you're paying to get into the park, you might as well get your money's worth and play both courses.

Pros:

- Nice Signs.
- Nice Tee pads.
- It was easy to navigate.

Cons:

- Pretty wet, it looks like this course could hold water for a few days. Wasn't bad when I played, you had to just avoid some large puddles.
- The Park can get pretty crowded especially on a weekend. When I played, I started early but by the time I got towards the end of the round, I had to play very cautiously on some holes. I didn't enjoy having to do that.
- Holes 13 and 14 don't seem to belong. There are a lot of holes between 250 - 300ft., and then all of a sudden you get to back to back holes almost 900ft. To me they could have made these around 600ft, and it would have been more in line with the course.
- Had to pay to park. You don't always have to do this but probably mainly on the weekends.

Other Thoughts:

- All in all a pretty nice course.

Fun park course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 16, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course plays through a large flat multi-use park with scattered mature trees and a nice stream. Though the park is pretty open, the trees are used very well to take away obvious lines on many holes, and force the use of different shots. The creek adds a great hazard on a couple holes, and a nice risk/reward option.

There is a really nice mix of lengths here, from aceable short holes, to 800+ foot bomb shots. The design also keeps things interesting by mixing up straight holes with left and right turning shots. A couple holes have nice tight windows off the tee, which was a fun surprise on a park style course.

There are excellent concrete tees on all holes, that were level with a good brushed surface. The tee signs were placed well behind the tees, and were easy to read with hole distance and layout, along with the location of the next tee. The baskets also had painted rungs indicating the direction of the next tee, making navigation extremely easy and obvious here.

The park was well taken care of, with well mowed grass, and plenty of facilities and trash cans. Despite the heavy use of the park, it was clean and pretty, clearly a lot of work goes into taking care of the park.

Cons:

The one thing really bringing my rating down is the heavy use of the park by non disc golfers. A lot of the holes had families picnicking right on the fairways or around the holes. The park is full of picnic tables and grills, and all were in use. This meant that a large number of holes were close to unplayable without chancing hitting small unsupervised children.

The course also crosses roads and paths in a few places, meaning that there is a good chance you'll end up waiting for cars and pedestrians (and children on atvs without any kind of parental supervision).

In terms of the actual course design, the only real complaint I had was that the woods and stream weren't used quite enough. Where they were used, the designers made some great holes, I would have liked to have seen more like this. Otherwise, the space was used well, and the design was good.

Other Thoughts:

I really wish I could have played the course on a weekday, I'm guessing that the park is less crowded with other uses. I would recommend for anyone who wants to play here, don't do it on a nice weekend or afternoon.

It's a great course for beginners, with easy navigation and no real chance of losing a disc. More experienced players will need to use a variety of shots to score well here, and will enjoy the challenge.

I really enjoyed playing this course and would definitely recommend it if you're in the area. I didn't have a chance to play the other course on site, but it looked like another nice course, making it even more worth it to make a stop here.

Really well taken care of. Front nine are makeable even for beginners which helps new people actually want to play, I doubt you have any trouble with it being too wet in the summer (The 100 degree weather will take care of it.)

Cons:

If you happen to throw a disc into the woods or creek: There's a HUGE amount of poison ivy, the creek is so murky you couldn't see your hand if you barely stuck it in. April-October Mohawk park has a 2 dollar admission fee.

Other Thoughts:

The front 9 are extremely fun.

Hole 11 is a gorgeous shot that will branch you off into the woods.

Hole 13 is a doozy so bust out your best driver.

Holes 14-16 are all right along the creek and if you're still a developing player like me and my friends one sliced drive could be the last one with that frisbee.

I actually lost a disc on hole 18. The tree was so thick we couldn't find the disc even when we climbed the tree.

Red Walk 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 1, 2008 Played the course:never

Pros:

Front 9 are short and back 9 are long so you get a warm up before you move on to the harder holes. Course has a few challenging shots around a few of it's trees and there are some nice drives. Good signs and pads.

Cons:

Ground always seems to be wet. Take some shoes you don't mind getting dirty or some muck boots as you will be walking through some. Otherwise the course just needed some mowing when we played but they should be on top of that with such a nice park.

Other Thoughts:

Nice park with fewer trees than Blackhawk but enough still for a challenge. Lost a few discs on the creek so be careful around it.

Warm up that arm! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 22, 2008 Played the course:never

Pros:

Course naturally warms you up for the longer throws. Concrete tee pads.

Cons:

Too many distance shots for me. Sometimes they charge you to park!!!

Other Thoughts:

If you never played there, don't get cocky because you've birdied the first couple holes. You will really have to work to birdie later on. The course is more open than blackhawk if you're a tree hater. The two courses together could make for a nice day.
