Pros:

Rooster Rock West Course is located in Corbett, Oregon sitting right on the Columbia River and offers for a very pleasant 9 holes. Rooster Rock State Park offers two nine hole courses. Let me tell you they are complete opposites. The east side is very heavily wooded and some technical lines. The west side offers for longer shots and more open holes.

Navigation on this course isn't that bad and follows a out to in sort of pattern. It's pretty straight forward. Not very crowded and the east course but still ran into some groups playing.

Decent hardware at Rooster Rock. Small concrete tee pads, Mach 5 baskets and tee signs.
Both sides at Rooster Rock are challenging by no means. Water comes in to play on holes 5 and 6. I've played this course twice and some of the holes have alternate tee pads and pin locations.

Hole 4 is a lovely hole. It kind of plays in this mini valley with a backdrop of beautiful cliff looking out at the river. Decent elevation change throughout the course. Nothing extreme but more of a subtle change.

Beautiful oak trees through out this side of the course. The scenery on the west course is truly spectacular.

Parking is extremely easy. There are hundreds of spots to choose from but you have to drive to the end of the parking lot or so to reach the first hole. This parking lot apparently serves as shuttle parking for Multnomah Falls.

Cons:

This course gets very wet during the winter time. It reminds me a little bit of Dabney State Park just down the road, and that course can get some serious rain. I would recommend some wet weather clothes if you are going during the winter months.

Hole 5 basket is very close to the water. I'm not sure if that's the only pin location but the basket was far to close for comfort while putting. Hole 2 is not an amazing hole. You kind of have to throw and hope you get through.

Other Thoughts:

This is one of a few courses along the Columbia river. Both the East and the West course are challenging and since it costs $5 to get in I would hit up both while your here.

What's nice about the east side is that since the west side has longer more open holes, the east side offers the technical wooded holes. There's not much variety in terms of holes on the the west side so it's nice that they have another the nine that is the complete opposite. Both courses are on opposite sides of the parking lot.

Fun Park-Style Track

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 1, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

In a beautiful park by the Columbia River with nice views and good amenities for pre or post round or for other travelers who may be along on the trip.

Serviceable DGA baskets, concrete tee pads, and signs intact on most holes. The flow of the course was easy to follow and I played it without a course map or the use of an app.

In contrast to the other course within this park, this course plays as more typical "park style," with most of the tee shots being rather open, with key trees to be avoided in the fairways and on approaches. Good variety of distances among the holes. Some interesting hilltop pin placements.

There are subtle elevation changes on the property and these are used effectively in the design of several holes. Hole 9's basket is close to hole 1's tee, so the course makes a nice loop back to near where you park.

Cons:

The signage on the course is lacking, but I found it easy to follow. Some "next tee" signs would alleviate a little bit of indecision on the middle holes.

The course was not mowed well and was a bit boggy in places. Both of those things may simply be due to the recent weather or might be frequent problems. I can't say.

Most of the holes seemed to be most friendly for RHBH lines from the tee pad. There are a lot of fun shots, but this is typical park golf. A good place to work on the basics of the game, but nothing special.

Other Thoughts:

$5 daily parking fee or Oregon State Parks pass required. One other 9-hole course in the same park.

I saw some players parking near hole 2's tee, which is close to the restrooms, and finishing on hole 1. Hole 1 is the longest and most open hole on the course, so I like it as a starting hole, to warm up with a driver shot and an approach shot, more than as a finishing hole.

I talked with another player on the course who told me he lives in East Portland and this is now his favorite place to play now because, in contrast to other area courses, it is rarely crowded and it is easy to get to from where he lives.

There is a stark contrast between the two courses in this park. The other one is tight and hilly and this one is mostly open and mostly flat. They are definitely two distinct courses that are far apart in the park and far apart in style. I would recommend playing them both, if you visit.

Pros:

Tee signs on most the holes
Baskets our in good condition
Good mix of long and short holes
For being 9 holes you get the chance to throw your big boy drivers
Navigation is fairly simple.
Beautiful background views, and very beautiful area.

Cons:

The par 4s should honestly be par 3s. There's 3 of them, and they're all way to easy to be par 4s. I think only one of them is over 400, and they all have wide open lines for the eagle.
The course itself is pretty wide open with few scattered trees. Not much variety or elevation change.

Other Thoughts:

The east side is completely opposite of the west and when paired together can be a fun variety of 18 holes. $5 for parking covers both courses

Pros:

-Rooster Rock West is the more traditional of the two 9-hole layouts at Rooster Rock State Park. It plays through a moderately wooded, picnic-type area.

-It's a well-designed course with a variety of lines. Over the course of 9 holes, you should use at least 6 or 7 different discs off the tee.

-Any course in the Gorge grants spectacular scenery. Cliffs, seasonal waterfalls, the Columbia River, Rooster Rock, and the Vista House are all within view from one point or another.

-Concrete tee pads, Mach 5 baskets, and a sign with a map near the first hole get the job done.

-Best Holes:
#4 is a slightly downhill, 340 ft flex shot with the basket perched on a small hill among three large trees.
#6 is the best hole on the course. It's a downhill, open shot measuring 280 ft with water on the right and a magnificent view. The right pin position makes this an exceptionally difficult hole.

Cons:

-Potential for strong wind -- being less than 50 yards from the shore of the Columbia River, 30+. mph wind speeds are common.

Worst Holes:
#2 is a short, poke-and-hope through a dozen trees. If a few large branches were removed, there would be a good line.
#8 is another hole without a great line, at least in the right-hand position. The traditional position, straight ahead, is a much better hole.

Other Thoughts:

-Not a crowded course. A round shouldn't take more than 45 minutes.

-This park has an enormous parking lot, part of which is used as shuttle parking for Multnomah Falls tourists.

-To locate the first tee, after passing the tollbooth, make a left and continue 2/3rds of the way down to the sea of parking lots. Park near the sign for Group Picnic Area D, which is adjacent to the first tee. If you arrive at the restrooms, you've gone too far.

-This is an enjoyable course to play. If you prefer park-style courses, a second spin around this course is your best bet. If you're feeling adventurous, however, check out the East nine.

Nothing exciting, but pairs great with Rooster East 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 21, 2018 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Rooster Rock West has some nice scenic beauty, paired with a simple, but reasonably challenging layout. The course has a nice variety of distance, with a few very approachable shorter par threes, coupled with (relative to the size and general quality of the course) a few pretty long par threes. While most of the holes are pretty straightforward Oregon tunnel-through-the-trees holes, holes 2, 3, and 6 provide for some really fun lines, with hole 6 in particular providing a really nerve-wracking over-the-water shot that is the highlight of the course. While the course does lack signage, it does at least follow a logical order with short walkouts and easy access to the massive parking lot. The tees and baskets are top notch and are generally in very good condition.

Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, this course compliments its sister course - Rooster Rock East, extremely well. Either course on its own would be a pretty skimpy destination from Portland (course is a good 30+ minute drive from town) but together they form an 18 hole track well worth visiting (though I would push any out-of-towners to one of the PDX metro areas better quality courses). My advice to a local coming to check out the course would be to play Rooster West first as a warmup, then play one or two loops around the much more difficult (but also more fun) Rooster East course.

Cons:

Lack of signage (printing out, or having the course map - available under the Links tab - is recommended)
The final few holes are largely uninspired design-wise
Other than hole 6, a fair number of the holes are too straight-forward.

Other Thoughts:

Make sure to have access to the course map. Start at this course, then drive back to the East course which is almost a mile away at the other end of the park.

For folks interested in it, the Park has one of Oregon's two sanctioned nude beaches.

Pros:

This is a fairly well done 9 hole course in Rooster Rock State park. There is a sign near hole 1 showing entire course and it was fairly easy to follow. There is a variety of shots but it is all pretty flat and fairly open. There is nice use of river and trees to supply some challenge but even with that it is a pretty easy course.

Cons:

No signs on course after opening sign, took some looking to make sure on track. A stop above pitch and putt but a short one. Pleasant but not overly challenging course. If by itself not worth the $5 to get in the park.

Other Thoughts:

The contrast between the 2 courses is amazing. Hard to imagine 2 more different courses. Beware going from this to east course, much different!

Good for newbies 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 26, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

As a beginner, this course was fun. The first 4 play along the road to the boat ramp and the last 5 play back along the first 4. The course is simple with concrete tee boxes facing the baskets. Not a lot of challenges if I was consistent with my throws but since I am not there were plenty of trees along the course to throw behind. There is really only one spot, #6, where there is a risk of losing a disc.

The first 4 play great for a RHBH as the road and parking lot are on the right. However, the next 5 present a challenge to both left and right handed players.

Map at #1. This was awesome. I suggest you take a photo of the map with your phone. This will help a lot.

Again, as a beginner, I don't throw 400'+. My throws are probably closer to 300' at best. I was able to throw a Valkyrie (my only driver) off the tee box so this course was perfect. It let me air out a lot of drives.

Cons:

$5 entrance fee. This didn't bother me much because we ran to Benson afterwards but for some reason this could be a deterrent. I will be back after I buy the season pass.

Galvanized baskets. If these had bright coloring on them it would have made them easily visible from the tee box.

Maps at each tee box. Until now the tee box markers didn't bother me. However, I found it frustrating that we didn't know how each hole played out. These holes are longer than I usually play and it was hard to find the baskets at the tee box. There were a few times that we couldn't see the baskets and had to walk the fairway to find them. If this was a busy day we would have held up any group behind us.

Other Thoughts:

Conditions: It was a partly sunny Sun with not a lot of people. There was no wind and the fairway path was mowed.

If you are a beginner and planning to hit the east and west, I suggest you play the west twice. I got three two into the east and realize it was beyond my ability. The east did look fun but I hit 5 trees on #1 and 5 on #2.

You could also play this and jump to Benson. I suggest Benson if you are a beginner only.

I have only played 4 courses and since I gave Woodland Comm. Church a 3, I have to give this a 2.5.

Nice walk in a park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 31, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Bathrooms, plenty of parking. Great place for a new thrower (if it's not windy). Hole 4 has a great placement for the basket. Hole 6 plays around the end of a body of water and with a few small tree patches makes it the most fun hole on the west course.

Cons:

Signs are not the best, so download a map from this site it will help EXcept number 9 which was moved at least 90 degrees to the right from where the map had the basket. If it's windy you need to go play Dabney unless you want the wind challenge. In the winter the park is a mess...after the wind storms it had down branches everywhere...but it is winter.

Other Thoughts:

This course the west end of Rooster Park is a good warm up for the east end course. They are totally different and that makes for a fun 18. It would be nice if the Parks Dept. cleaned up the wind mess at least every couple of weeks in the winter.
One more thought...this course in the summer could be very crowded making it harder to play with people everywhere!

West Is Best 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 8, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Scenic Beauty - There is a lot to look at that makes this place pleasing to play. There is the wonderful mountains with their beautiful waterfalls flowing down right in view of the course as well as the Columbia River if you look North. There is also a little lake I guess you could call it that has a boat ramp and leads into the river.

The Course - The course has a lot of different holes lengths and different kind of challenges. Some of the holes get technical with tree obstacles, hole two comes to mind where it looks like there is no line to the basket and when you get there you realize it's bigger than you thought, a great vision obstacle. Some holes like four, five and six have the basket placed near the little lake with the boat launch near the basket so an errant throw can make you go swimming.

Cons:

The main con that I found was finding hole number one and then after that navigation got a lot better though I would say bringing a map helped me out quite a bit and I recommend that you do the same. It plays right next to the freeway and there is a great deal of noise coming from that which can be distracting especially with all of the visual beauty. Those are the only the only cons that come to mind, this is a solid all around disc golf course.

Other Thoughts:

This is my favorite by far of the two courses on site. The west course is everything I like about disc golf and the east course I wouldn't even play again. This area is prime for a disc golfing course bagger trip like the one I made just make sure you check out Dabney State Park right up the road.

A fun, quick, easy round... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 21, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

*Relatively open, but enough trees to keep it interesting...
*Good flow
*Some good views of the Columbia river and gorge...
*For a pretty flat course, there are a couple holes that encorporate what little elevation there is quite nicely.
*Two holes where water can come into play with an errant shot.
*Nothing TOO long, but long enough to break out the drivers for some ridiculous ace runs...
*Ace Runs galore....
*Of the couple times I've played, I've never seen more than one other group on the course...
*A great chance to work on your game because its open enough to try new shots, but enough of a challenge to punish errant shots...

Cons:

*No signs, and as another reviewer stated, you can see multiple baskets from a couple of the tees, so it can be a bit confusing...
*# 9 is very near an off-leash area, so beware of dog piles...
*There are no WOW holes, but at the same time, there are no horrible holes (see: Rooster Rock East #3)
*Its right next to I-84, so you can see and hear traffic, and you don't get the secluded feeling that you get on the East course.

Other Thoughts:

I normally do not like more open courses, but this one is different for some reason. I'm not sure if its because of its close vacinity to Rooster Rock East (which can be amazingly frustrating..) or if its just because its a pretty cool course....

When you get into the park, go left after the pay station. The first hole is right off the road, near the off-leash area (I think there's a couple signs near the road)... From there the flow is pretty intuitive, it goes west (along the road) for three holes, then works its way back east for the remainder of the course...

This course, is by no means a destination course, but if you're driving along I-84, and you want a quick, fun 9, give it a shot...

Worth a stop, but not a must play 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 14, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The course is reasonable for beginners to play since it is fairly open, but the distance provides a bit of challenge for better players. There is never a long walk from one basket to the next tee. The scenery is very nice. Concrete tees. Convenient to the highway.

Cons:

There are usually more than one basket visible from each tee, so it was sometimes confusing where I was supposed to be throwing. No signage or tee numbers. The holes don't have a ton of character, so there are no signature holes that would really draw you to this course.

Other Thoughts:

Honestly, the course makes good use of the space that is there and provides a nice complement to Rooster Rock West. There's nothing wrong with small courses in parks like this; we could use more of them. If you're driving through and need a quick round, this is a good spot. It's just not one you need to go out of your way to play.

Cons:

- Often very windy
- Not enough trees

Other Thoughts:

The best thing about Rooster West is that it combines with its sister course on the east end of the park to make a pretty good 18. On its own, the west course is a little bit on the boring side. Most holes are more or less wide open, with the glaring exception of #2, which has almost no route at all. But it's nice to have a couple holes (#5 and #6) with real water hazards, as they're somewhat rare around here. Be prepared to deal with either headwinds or tailwinds on most holes.

The waterfall across from the #6 teepad is one of the best disc golf vistas in Oregon, especially on a summer evening.

By the way, the photos that are on here (as of 3/3/09) are a few years old. The course has concrete teepads and less tall grass now.

Pros:

This course plays from the middle of the park to the far west end. It's flat and the water comes into play on # 5 & 6. It's a pretty state park on the mighty Columbia River with some awesome views. There's a map at the first hole. It's easy to follow with 5 holes down and four coming back. Just a nice relaxing throw, not a particularily easy course though. There are benches to sit on. Nice concrete teepads.

Cons:

# 6 basket sits down maybe 25' from the end of a spit/slough ( I don't know what the hell the proper term is for this chunk of water here ?) It was muddy on July 6, what would it be like in winter? I'd move the basket to a spot a little less flood prone.

Other Thoughts:

Play here for your casual, relaxing round, then drive to the other end for your challenging, disc hunting experience. The two combined compliment each other rather nicely.

Cons:

-Hole six floods occasionally when we get heavy rains.

Other Thoughts:

If this was an 18 hole course, it'd be one of my favourite courses in Oregon. It's just beautiful, it feels more like La Mirada at times than anything in the NW.
The views are insane. Looking south from the course gives you a vew of a 400ish foot seasonal waterfall. Looking north, you have the columbia river, which is over a mile wide, and then on the other side there are more waterfalls cascading down the Washington cliffs. Add to that the fact that the area has a lot of Bald Eagles that come and roost on the course from time to time, it's just beautiful.

The course itself it awesome as well. You start off at hole one, which is something like 415' or so. Then the next hole you come to has skinny little routes through a thick group of trees. All the holes are good, all of them. It's a must play if you live in the PDX area and haven't gotten out there. Then, when you're done having a relaxing beautiful round of golf on the west course, go play the east course for a serious NC style butt-kicking!
