Reviewed: Played on:May 15, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

-It's good practice. Not long and open. Can be helpful on a windy day since open courses are more volatile in the wind. You'll have some shot shaping requirements since there are a few trees. You throw around a bush on hole two.

-First hole was kind of good. Slightly uphill and wooded through a few rows of trees.

-It's a great family park. Playground and walking path. And if you are in danger and need to hideout somewhere, this is the place. It's right beside the police station in Simpsonville. No one will go after you here. This is all hypothetical brainstorming because I can't find many pros for this course. It's pretty horrible.

-Oh yeah, and there's a board beside hole 1. Tells you that there are eighteen pads and nine pins. Gives you the course lengths.

Cons:

-Repetition. There are eighteen pads and nine baskets. Dual pads would usually be a pro in my book. It's not here. It's a con. Many of the second pads are no more than 40' from the others and the lines aren't much different with the exception of holes two and eleven. Same object though. Avoid the bush. Many of the holes are very similar in distance. Average hole length is 232' long with a standard deviation of only 46'. Meaning that there's probably only one hole close to 100' from the average because there's no real variance. That hole is #15, it's 135' long. Sure it's pretty different from the average distance but it's a very dumb looking short hole. #6 is the other hole that plays to that basket and it's still a stupid short hole.

-Many baskets are close in proximity. It's a little cramped. There are no tee signs so you'll want to look and check at which basket you are throwing to. The numbers on the baskets are very small. I've written papers with bigger computer fonts.

-Course was designed in 1998, so the baskets are almost as old as I am. They have the TAR knocked out of them. They catch fine but look horrible. Lots of chipped up paint. Probably not worth the money for new baskets, as they could go to better use elsewhere.

-As much of a city park this is, you'll probably see more than just pedestrians. Open spaces at city parks are where people have picnics, throw frisbees back and forth, etc.

Other Thoughts:

-Boring, not worth it at all. Small space and relatively flat. I was a baby when this course was designed but if I were to have been an accountant for the parks and rec department back then, I would've told the head of the department concerning their consideration for a course at Simpsonville City Park........

"NO!!"

I wish I could write that in bold and in a bigger font. But it should only take one two letter word for me to recommend against this course.

The Simpsons post-1998. (Hint: Not Good)

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 3, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Set in a busy small-town park just blocks from downtown, Simpsonville DGC is one of many activities located here. In a packed park, I was the only one playing the course. Hmmmm.
- This is a simple, straight ahead 9-hole course. Two sets of tees give you different looks on certain holes. Other holes, not so much.
- Course flows between wooded layouts (#1 & 9) to open holes (essentially every other hole). Let's just say the lost-disc factor is virtually non-existent.
- Course is easy to navigate. Seven of nine holes go north-south with the other two (#6 & 9) playing east-west, all in the same plot of land.
- Most holes have the same straight-ahead approach - throw a sweeping hyzer or anhyzer towards the target. You throw a RHBH or LHBH on every hole without hitting a tree, and you'll be in birdie land.
- Solid course for beginners and casual players. No holes are longer than 300 feet. Even for casual players, simply being able to throw 200 - 250 feet will result in birdie chances and lots of pars.
- Along those lines, not a lot of difficulty. Challenge are the trees from low ceilings on #1 & 9 to the single basket protecting the basket on #2 or 8.

Cons:

Course suffers from the worst thing a course can be....BORING. Not a single memorable hole. #1 & 9 are the most memorable, or simply different, because they require a little more skill and accuracy. The other holes all feel like the same layout with only slight variations.
- Lack of challenge. It's clear the course was built simply for the sake of having a disc golf course in the park. Unfortunately, that means the course wasn't given top priority or a lot of resources. Very clear the course was built where there was space.
- I'll say it. With so many other courses in the area, is this course needed? There are plenty of courses within 20 minutes from here. Except for the practice area at Sara Collins school, every other course around is head and shoulders better than Simpsonville.
- Lack of variety. Clearly due to being installed in an open field. How does one create a challenge when seven of nine holes are in a field with only a smattering of trees? I can't say it's the designers' faults per se. It's just poorly conceived.
- Lack of tee signs and signage. With so many holes and tees in proximity, very easy to either walk to the wrong tee or throw to the wrong basket.
- If the course were ever busy, you better keep an eye on other players. Almost every hole overlap with other holes. Any shot slightly offline, and you're technically on a different hole's fairway.

Other Thoughts:

Simpsonville Park offers a disc golf course for locals. It also offers plenty of other amenities. I think every other amenity is better than the course.
- There was a farmer's market in the park when I played on a Saturday morning. That was much more appealing than the course.
- Even on a standard nine-holer, I could only see holes #1, 7, or 9 as being fun enough to make the cut. Pick your average 18-hole course in your hometown. If any hole from this course were moved to your local course, it would stand out like a sore thumb as being the worst.
- By default, #9 is the course's best course. You must throw a low tee shot. You must hold your line due to the tree cover. You also must make sure nobody is walking on any of the paths.
- I don't think I was ever in danger of shooting worse than a 3. That's even with keeping my bag on my shoulder for many of my approaches and putts.
- #1 & 10 and 2/11 give the most variety from the dual tee pads. Every other hole seemed like you were playing the same shot twice...maybe 40 feet difference in length or 20-30 feet left vs right. It's bad enough that it's not worth listing any hole numbers on the mythical 'back 9.'
- As nice as downtown Simpsonville is, and it was a bustling downtown on a Saturday morning, this course was equally as bad. A great small town and small-town park has potential for a better course. It's fine for what it is, just know there are much better options close by.

Uneasy Feeling 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 20, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-There are tee pads
-There are tee signs with distance only
-There are goals
-Good low ceiling practice on a few holes
-Lots of different distractions to help you work on finding ways to stay focused.

Cons:

-Tee pads are gravel/dirt and are highly pitted and uneven.
-Tee signs are hard to spot
-Goals are showing age
-Very tightly squeezed into a busy park/traffic area
-Very confusing flow
-Tons of distractions between park visitors and lots of traffic.

Other Thoughts:

I was advised to skip this course by locals, but I wanted to give it a fair shot, so I played anyway. The locals were right.

The course features 9 baskets with 2 tee pads per basket which led to interesting interactions with other players playing to the same basket as me. The first tee was tough to find just as just about every tee thereafter. The tee poles just seem to blend in to the surrounding so well, it is hard to find them sometimes. The tees themselves were pea gravel/dirt and were terribly uneven.

The day I played, there was a terrible stench of something rotting in the dumpster that could be smelled over half the course. There were basketball and tennis courts in close proximity and a very busy road right beside you for more than half the holes. Everything combined just created a very unwelcoming environment for a disc golfer. The entire time, I felt like my presence was not really wanted for some reason. Maybe it is because I am not used to being that close to that much traffic or that many people when I am playing.

It was not all terrible. I will say the course did provide some good low ceiling practice on about half the holes. Those make in a worthwhile play if that is what you are working to improve.

In the end, I agree with locals. This is probably one to skip for experienced disc golfers. If you do go, take a map and patience with you.

Great Learning Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 16, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-You've got the option to throw several different types of shots on each hole.
-Although in a park, the park is not too crowded.
-Great for beginners.
-Great use of available space.
-Decent amount of distance on some of the holes.
-The big magnolia tree on holes #2 and #10 is the only place you could possibly lose a disc.

Cons:

-Sand tees collect water when it rains.
-Road noise and children screaming at the park can be distracting.
-You throw directly at a street on holes #7 and #16.
-Only 9 pins, kind of repetitive
-Baskets are wobbly which may affect your putt although it has yet to happen to me.

Other Thoughts:

Overall I think this course is great considering how close to home it is. Definitely not a wishlist course, but if you've got someone you're trying to introduce to the sport then this is a great place to take them. The FireCracker in Ft. Inn is also close, and while more challenging overall it lacks the distance of Simpsonville. This is where I learned the sport, so it will always have a place in my heart reserved for it no matter how many other courses I play.

Typical Small Course in a City Park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 11, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Simpsonville City Park is a great place for beginners to learn the game. This course is mostly flat and lightly wooded and most holes are in the 200-300 ft. range. There are also many opportunities for an ace which will keep newer players coming back for more. The dual pads give you a completely different look on most holes and help to keep more experienced players interested.

Cons:

Simpsonville is tightly packed on a small tract of land, so it's very difficult to play during peak hours. You have to watch for incoming discs on most holes and you have to wait for walkers and other activities on a regular basis. Hole 9/18 can be nearly unplayable at times as you are forced to throw over the basketball course.

Other Thoughts:

Despite having mostly open and easy holes, Simpsonville City Park is well-designed for such a small area. While not a bad course, SCP really is just your typical 9-basket course in a small city park. It's definitely not a destination course, but is a great teaching tool and is worth playing if you are course bagging.

Fun course, but a bit crowded 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 26, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Fun shots, a few chances to get an ace. Nice to learn in. Generally well laid out.

Cons:

The park is usually busy so you have to watch out for people. A lot. Not particularly gorgeous, but a course is a course.

Other Thoughts:

Played my first round here several years back. I have a special feeling for this course. The tees and pins are all in good spots where it helped me learn as I got better. Though no shots are particularly long, it can help you out if you need to work on your power game. Generally a good course.

Great place to learn 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 7, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Great open holes. Excellent learning environment. I learned to play here. Fun shots. Ace runs. Some obstacles that keep it somewhat exciting. OB comes into play which helps improve accuracy. Tight shots here and there also improve your game. Low scores can be had, improving confidence.

Cons:

City park = pedestrians.

No trash cans on most of the course and sadly some patrons of the park litter.

Gets super busy during football season. Coaches bring their teams out and use open area to practice. This wouldnt be terribly bad if the coaches weren't arrogant pains in the butt. They won't make their teams move as if it is beneath them.

Dirt tees can get muddy with rain. Many are washed out and in need of replacing.

Other Thoughts:

Great place to bring your family. You can meet new people here. Fresh paint on baskets is nice. Inner chains have been added. New metal tee signs give correct distances. Not a must go destination for DG but it plays quick if you are crunched for time.

Good Park Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 30, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

--Great course for a casual round
--Good use of 9 baskets for 18 holes (the second set of tees for each hole are put in different spots and it really does make the holes look different a second time around)
--Good baskets
--Surprisingly challenging on some holes (it is easily par-able, and birdies are possible on all holes, but I did not expect this course to offer some of the challenges it did)

Cons:

--The park is busy during baseball games and traffic noises are a constant distraction on most holes
--The course gets boring quickly after you play the first round
--The tees were just sand/dirt and were often uneven
--Pedestrians could be a problem on many holes since 6 holes play either over or along sidewalks
--The course flow was confusing the first time

Other Thoughts:

This is a good course for what it is. It gets boring fast, but it's a decent course for a casual round.

Another Nine Holer In A Busy City Park! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 20, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Simpsonville Park seems to be a pretty busy place. With that being said, you have to be careful here on some of the holes with the other park users. Baskets are single chain Discatchers. The teepads are three-sided posts with sand inside. The longest hole is probably 250 ft. Holes # 1 and # 9 play into some heavy pedistrian traffic. Another course that's a bit too long to be considered a pitch and putt.

Cons:

The course is a little short on the "Wow Factor." It's just not real exciting overall. The sand teepads are kind of a pain. Definitely you have to be careful and watch out for the oblivious park users.

Other Thoughts:

I thought this was a great course on which to practice my rollers. That way, there was no chance of decking someone with one of my powerful drives. It's truly not a destination course.

C- = a little below average for a 9 holer 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 18, 2004 Played the course:once

Pros:

What I personally like and how this course stacks up:
1) Holes with good risk/reward. Fair, but harsh punishment for bad decisions or execution. == C-
2) Holes that have rewarding birdie opportunities for me. I throw 300' accurately, 360' max. == C-
3) More wooded than open - lots of variety of shots required caused by hole shape and topography == C-
4) Natural beauty (Appalachian beauty preferred) and seclusion. == C-
5) Bonus points for multi-shot holes with defined landing zones, good risk/reward and multiple options to play them. == N/A

Other Thoughts:

It's all about feeding the addiction, so I ranked this course subjectively based on my own "personal addiction factor". The grades above tell how well the course will draw me back to itself again and again and again. Since I have played a decent number of courses (125 18-hole, 64 9-hole as of mid 2009), my hope is that players/explorers who have similar addiction tastes will find my ratings list helpful as they choose courses to play and explore.

Over time, I expect to fill some of my reviews in with more descriptive verbiage...if what I can add anything to what has already been written. For now, my list is more important to me than the verbiage of my reviews.

I fully expect others with different tastes/philosophies to disagree with me....that's the fun of things here. See my profile for my rating philosophy.

nice city park 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 24, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

It uses dual tees marked #1-18 (really just the same as having a short and a long tee) to make an 18 hole layout for 9 baskets. Uses empty park space mostly, turning nothing into something. A few longer shots. Clean, mowed. Tees all marked by post. Good for new players, just enough shots for an experienced player to play.

Cons:

Limited variety as there are not a lot of trees but for #1, #9. You can throw a hyzer around most any obstacle and park it. Expect spit-throughs on the yellow baskets.
