Reasonable Park Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 24, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Concrete Pads (see cons)
-Baskets OK
-Nice tee shot over small river on #7
-Cool bridge over river
-Good blind shot on #3

Cons:

-Tee pads a little short
-Signage is DGA "Peel 'n Stick" (TM) and worn
-Walking path in play on #1, #2, #3, #4, #6, #7 and #9
-Par is a bit generous
-More room to work with in this area, longer holes or more of them very possible
-No benches / trashcans

Other Thoughts:

Story City Park DGC plays in the park adjacent to the Roland-Story Sports Complex in the eastern part of Story City, IA. A reasonable park course, winds down and back along a walking path for the first 6 holes. #7 tees across the South Skunk River, with a lovely bridge to cross. You can drop on the other side, but the carry isn't much. The basket for #7 and holes #8 and #9 play in the small area on the other side of the bridge. Baskets and signage are the DGA starter kit, but OK in this setting. Holes run on the short side with only one cracking 300' (#9 at 301'). Only really errant throws on #6 and #9 will hazard water. The biggest hazard is the walking path, in play on 7 holes. The 2 most interesting shots are a blind left turn off the #3 tee and the tee over the river on #7. Some trees to work around, but lines are mostly open. I agree with past reviews that there is quite a bit more space here. That could have been used to make longer holes or more of them. That being said, this works as a good novice course in a city park, generous pars, short distances, adequate info on the signage, etc. About 3/4 of a mile into Story City off I-35, would make for a good stretch of the legs. A reasonable course that I might play again.

Short and Sweet 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 10, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Nice baskets.
Layout works in the space allotted.

Cons:

The teepads are about half the size you'd want them.
There is potential for pedestrians on the walking path that's in play on a few holes.
This course could really benefit from new/better signs.

Other Thoughts:

The designers of this course really tried to utilize the space they were given and did a good job.
You'll be throwing low ceiling shots, left to rights, a spike hyzer, over water, a few Ace runs and through windows in the branches.
Oh, and a couple wide open shots, too.
There is a port-a-john by the basket of hole 7.
I like to play here on my lunch breaks; it plays quick.
There is potential for adding another 9 baskets. During the Skunk River Shootout they added in many, many holes, I think they could do another 9.

Overall, its a pretty park, always well maintained.
Great for beginners, good for locals, perfect for putters.

Pros:

-Course is relatively easy to find.
-Beginner friendly
-The tees are in very good conditon.
-The tee signs are very useful.
-The baskets are in good condition as well.
-Good amount of trees, as well as open space on this course.
-Traffic on this course is fairly low.
-Most holes have a reasonable shot of being aced.
-Good course to use a variety of different shots.

Cons:

-Some of the tee signs are being vandalized.
-The par 4 and 5s here are very generous--all are par 3 distance.
-Easy to lose a disc in the river or in trees in you are not careful.
-If crowded, it may take longer to make it through than it should.
-Intersecting fairways--can be a major hassle if there is heavy traffic.
-There is a bit of litter here.
-Bugs can somewhat be an issue at times.

Other Thoughts:

It's a nice small course for people who live in the town, but serious players would have a better time stopping in Ames. The course there are much better and they are only 15 minutes from this one.

-Great for beginning players
-Just off of Interstate 35 for those traveling players

-No two holes are alike
-A quite unique course
-Good use of what land they were given
-Pins are in great shape
-Grass is cut weekly
-Bathroom on hole 8

Cons:

-Extremely easy course
-Intersecting fairways
-Very short and boring
-All of the holes are easy par 3 distance
-Pedestrian path you must throw over
-Hole 1 is easy to skip off of sidewalk and bounce into the river
-Tee signs are starting to be vandalized and pulled out of the ground by players.

I would recommend you stop by this course to warm up if you are coming from the north to play Ames, Des Moines, Ankeny, Altoona, Etc. Great Course to get your first or your 100th Ace on. Course is in great condition.

Short but not too bad 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 26, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Nice signs
-Nice baskets
-Nice tees
-River and water provide a little challenge
-Park is pretty clean and grass looks to be mowed regularly
-Easy to find off main drag in town, good parking
-Good for beginners
-Good for a quick round
-Shouldn't lose a disc, river isn't a huge challenge
-Just off I-35

Cons:

-Very short and not a lot of variation in distances
-If there are multiple people on the course you have to be careful due to poor layout
-Park is small and that has a lot to do with the layout

Other Thoughts:

Like the other reviewer said this course really isn't worth playing. It is pretty average, small and not challenging. If I lived around it I would play it but otherwise I would leave it alone. Ames and Des Moines are just a few more miles down the interstate and have many good courses.

Small community course 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 12, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Baskets in good repair. A variety of distances and directions to throw. Plenty of trees to play around. Some water. A nicely maintained park.

Cons:

A couple places where fairways cross. Short holes.

Other Thoughts:

This course is located along a river in a small city park. Many of the holes are quite short and uninteresting. Even though it's just a mile or two from the interstate, I'd recommend traveling the extra distance to either Ames or Des Moines.
