Relatively Serene Play

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 23, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

Tradewinds was my first south FL disc golf experience and it was one I was quite impressed with. The directions I had actually didn't start me at hole one, but hole 4. However the course is a true loop so it doesn't really matter.

The main parking area is around to the left side of the park away from the lake, where you will see a large map and hole one not far from it.

There are three sets of tees with the White seeming to be the main as they are the only ones with signage, longer blue tees and short reds that are about unpaved.

Baskets are DGA I think Mach V for the main placements, but many have an alternate pin that is a Blue Mach X. Some of these are longer and more fun, while several are short and sort less interesting. In either baskets case they catch well as long as you aren't coming in too soft.

You begin with a couple of open holes that throw into or over some trees and then on 4 you get to interact with the water for a few holes. On 5-7 you can throw a line that goes over the water and that adds some fun challenge.

Then you weave some lines through semi wooded holes and end with more traditional park style lines that while simple are a lot of fun to play and many flirt with OB.

While the design isn't flawless, it's thoughtful and I really enjoyed this calm and fairly breezy play. Though from the long tees it's no pushover I was still able to attack it to a good score even with only my limited travel bag.

The views of the lake push this from a 3 to a 3.5 to me, the holes are fun on their own but that really adds a nice element.

Cons:

The cons that exist here are ones that many busy parks have and one of those is a huge amount of pedestrian traffic that is largely unconcerned with disc golf.

Several holes throw over or near the walking path and I would be prepared to wait at least a few times for your line to be clear. On one of the later holes the tee is even on the walking path and while it's an economically friendly idea it's not my favorite from a course traffic standpoint.

Other than that the only issues are the later holes can feel a bit repetitive and it's super flat. The elevated pin on 10 is the closest thing to an elevation change the course has. That's just normal for this part of the country though and I don't count it against the score really.

Other Thoughts:

It's a fun breezy play and if you pay attention to your tee/basket combo anyone from a beginner to a pro could have a good time here. As long as the newer players don't tempt fate by throwing over the water when they don't have control.

Tradewinds Course Was A Bit Too Open For My Tastes! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 30, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course plays through this large park and the parts that border the lake are really spectacularly beautiful, especially on this sunny March day. There is a triple sided kiosk at the start complete with course map. The concrete pads are extra long and the tee signs are nice and heavy duty. Each hole has three pads labeled Pro (the Blues) Am (white) and the rec (Red) but the signs are only on the middle Whites. Some holes have both an "A" and a "B" position while others only have one position. It took me awhile to catch on but I can be pretty slow figuring these complex courses out. Nearby Markham Park DGC has the same system.

The baskets are the DGA models with the always hard for me to read red numbers. # 1 has an alternate basket that is a green Prodigy model. Pretty basket, but in this case, it kind of threw me for a loop. From the middle White tees the course played at decently difficult recreational course. There is some water to deal with but it's a very pretty blue water with condos on the far shore. On the Whites, the holes range from about 240' on up to the high 300's with only # 16 playing over 400'. IMO, the signature hole here is # 6. It's 316' and the basket sits on a peninsula sort of piece of land that juts out. It's beautiful and fairly nerve-rackingly, difficult, as well. No matter how many dictionaries you use, I doubt if you'll find Nerve-Rackingly. I think I must have invented it.

Cons:

This was another one of these pancake flat, pretty as a picture, more open than not, having some or a lot of water, Florida courses I have played the last few days. Those fellows or gals with big arms will enjoy them more than I do. I tend to find too many open, flat holes a bit tedious.

The navigation here was a little confusing. I missed, I think, # 17.

Other Thoughts:

Other than it's beauty, the course didn't wow me. However, I would probably be more than satisfied It this were my home course. The three tees and multiple basket positions would really help keep the interest level high and it would always be a treat to enjoy the pretty water with these views.

Great Local Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 22, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This is a well constructed 18 hole course. Baskets in great shape. On most holes multiple tees and/or baskets. Very scenic. Located in a beautiful large park. Great signage! Easy to follow, even for first timers. Challenging thanks to a bit of water and some OB especially if windy! Concrete Tee Pads for all! The basket placement on some are great to make it more difficult and one has a man made elevation which was fun!

Cons:

Pay to play. It costs 1.50 a person to get into the park. The park is popular and used by many non disc golfers, be patient with bikes and families. Open, not much shade or places to sit while playing. I did say it was first time friendly as a Pro, but it can get confusing at times and you can get lost around hole 8/9. Mostly wide open shots, could use a few more wooded shots for variety.

Other Thoughts:

This was my first course when moving down to Florida from Virginia. I enjoyed the course from the first round. Fun and scenic. The park users are very nice to Disc Golfers and share the park with a smile.

Bathrooms readily available. Great park with many places for your family to stay and enjoy while you play a round.

The fun factor of this course made me rate it from a 3 to a 4 disc course. It can seem a bit monotonous as the majority of the shots are wide open, but after playing a few times the challenge really comes in with fine tuning the course. Two rounds here can really make for an enjoyable day out of disc golf. I prefer it to the two courses I've played in the West Palm Beach area. All have been fun, but Trade Winds has climbed to the top of my playlist. Only one really wooded corridor shot for this old Virginia DGer to enjoy!

Come for the Disc Golf, Stay for the Butterflies 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 21, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

+Poured-in tee pads on each hole, offering Rec/Am/Pro at each hole.
+Great signage indicating hole positioning, OBs, and distance to pin.
+Course takes the players through the south end of the park, which is very scenic and beautiful.
+Plenty of variety in holes (open, wooded, some elevated baskets, water, etc.).
+Benches at most of the holes to put your bag down when teeing off.
+Giant wooden sign that says "Disc Golf" with a course overview and some basic rules of the game behind it.
+Visitor center sells Innova discs and accessories.

Cons:

-Recovering discs in the water on holes #4 and #5 can be tricky as there are a bunch of shoreline rocks and plant life to contend with.
-Most of the holes are placed by a busy walkway that a lot of park patrons use for running/walking. Players may need to wait a few minutes for these folks to clear out before teeing off.
-Some holes become unplayable (water-logged) for a bit after a storm passes through.
-Some holes have some trash in the playing area.

Other Thoughts:

I like this course because it is close by to where I live, it can be challenging, and is very inviting to newer players. Most of the people I've run into are very friendly. While this may not be a destination course like Snyder Park, it is definitely worth playing through regularly, especially during the week when it is less busy (park stays open until 7:30 PM EST).

Other Thoughts:

If your a beginner the wind can get frustrating out here as its a constant of the course. that being said its a good course for all levels of play. I prefer the more technical courses, but this course has many opportunities to frustrate you into improvement!

Pros:

Very fun course that caters to all skill levels. Nice use of available terrain and water features. Informative signage and decent tees. The course is pretty and has a couple of sweet signature holes. The course was very clean and is well maintained. Another solid Broward County course. Friendly local DGers.

Cons:

Busy multi-use park with heavily used sidewalks and roads flirting with the course. It's worth dealing with for a course like this though and getting out there early helps minimize the conflicts.

Might want to bring some floaters if you like throwing your discs into water hazards.

Other Thoughts:

I've played all of the listed public Broward County courses now and agree with my friend Reposado about their eerie similarities to each other. Which is mostly a good thing. It's good to see this area upping their game and providing a wealth of good courses for locals and out of town visitors.

Beautiful Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 24, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Big beautiful park, course is located towards the back past Butterfly World.
- Lots of distance, with a few technical holes mixed-in.
- Good course for all skill levels.
- MachX amazing baskets!
- Good course map, signage, and tee pads.
- Baskets are located in intelligent places, utilizing all the natural foliage available.
- Big beautiful lake with a signature peninsula hole at #6!
- Course has changed a number of times showing commitment by park and local scene.
- Clean, well-maintained with restrooms and water fountains.

Cons:

- Safety issues with people crossing on bike/running path which winds through a majority of the course.
- Not much technical challenge.
- Minimal elevation change (pretty common in FL).
- Park employees will prevent you from going into the water to retrieve your disc.
- I understand the addition of hole 9 in the middle of the woods but it has problems. If it rains the hole is unplayable to the point where you can't even walk down the fairway without getting soaked. Also, the entire left side of the hole is an extremely dense thicket. It can be very difficult to recover a disc in there.

Other Thoughts:

Bottom Line: It is a beautiful course that is very well maintained. The palm trees and big gorgeous lake capture what DG in SOFLO is all about.

Also, there are soccer fields and lots of open space to get some field work in before or after your round. It costs $1.50 to get in the park but it is well worth it. You can also play Easterlin Park (15 minutes away) for a technical challenge and use your receipt to get in without paying another admission if you go the same day.

Solid for All Levels 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 7, 2018 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

18 holes with 3 tees to almost every hole (some share a pad) and two baskets (Mach X on every hole, Prodigy T1 on many holes) allow for different play. Course meanders through the south end of a large, scenic county park with mostly open holes, a really tight hole, and some water challenges plus an OB road on a few other holes. Easy to navigate. The signage (on the course) is adequate, but you can see most of the baskets from the tee save hole 11. Easy to get to. Nominal county park fee charged on weekends and holidays, but no additional disc golf fee, and the park office sells plastic too, always a plus.

Cons:

Off the fairways on a couple of holes can be really tough to find plastic (3, 8, and 9 come to mind). Please no swimming after your lost water throws. Course does get marshy in spots after downpours (especially 13). Please keep your eyes open for people walking on the paths or cars on the entrance road by 14-18.

Other Thoughts:

The Broward Disc Golf Association has continually sought to improve the course, and have recently laid down a woodchip path from 8 to 9. It is very nice and dry. This course has improved a lot in the short time I have lived down here and is one of the better courses to play if you're visiting near Fort Lauderdale.

Solid, Open, and Sunny 2+ years drive by

Pros:

Beautiful park with a great layout.

Easy to find the next tee/Accurate signage

Concrete Pads, both for Pro and Am tees. Jr. tees either on asphalt walking paths or concrete pads as well.

Water hazards on a few holes

Trash cans and benches at nearly all tee boxes.

Clean grounds, well maintained.

Bathrooms and water fountains well spaced out

Basket positions are moved periodically, (i.e A, B, C position)

New Mach 4 baskets.

Broward Disc Golf Association is very active and does great work maintaining and improving this and surrounding parks.

Friendly yet competitive players. Many league sanctioned events here throughout the week and just good, friendly folks who will be happy to give advice. Wait by the tables in the parking lot and introduce yourself and jump in.

Nice variety of par ranges, distances, and types of shots needed.

Cons:

No elevation change. Still enough obstacles to make things interesting.

The lake gets very deep very quickly. No swimming allowed.

Its Florida... Its hot and sticky most of the time. You either love it or hate it.

Foot traffic/picnickers can cause an issue on a few holes. You may see people unaware of what a basket is for sitting in the shade right by one or parking bikes on a tee pad. Call four or cuatro

$1.50 to get in the park on a weekend or holiday. Save the receipt for that day and use it to get in to nearby Easterlin, Heritage, or Markham Park the same day.

Other Thoughts:

Love this place, but its in Pompano Beach, not Ft. Liquordale. It was my home course for awhile. Miss it dearly. Nothing very special terrain wise here, but just an overall solid, challenging, but not over the top hard course. The layout and the people helped my game out so much. Shout out to the BDGA for doing great work!

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 27, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Flat, wide-open course that borders a stunning lake in an aesthetically pleasing public park. Those who want to rip drives over both land and water will be able to do that here and natural disc flights should glide gracefully through the air, unimpeded by tree or hill. The layout often involves backtracking but the navigation is pretty simple.
A nice job was done of setting up a few different options with tees and both the middle and long sets are good-sized slabs of concrete. The water comes into play nicely on 6 and 7: the former is clearly the best hole on the course. A hyzer approach at the basket will have to hover over the lake and fade towards the basket but leaves the disc at risk of being caught by the wind. A forehand or hyzer approach is over land and thus safer, unless the player is too aggressive with a big skip.

Cons:

15-16-17. On a busy day, these will be a nightmare. Directly over parking spots. Parallel to roads and walking spaces. The entire course is pretty bad in terms of interference with walking paths and multi-use areas.
3-6. This little down and back section runs into itself. 3 and 6 basically share a fairway as do 4 and 5.
Some of the basket locations are pretty weird. There's a common feature to some courses where a hole was in place but at some point it was decided to make it harder by sticking the basket into a corner where there really isn't landing area. More challenging, yes but it often ruins the flow of the hole. A bunch of those here.
Mostly, while a fun enough course and a solid play, Tradewinds just isn't interesting at enough points to be considered a must-play. One of those I'm-sure-it's fun-for-leagues courses that won't be memorable for visiting players.

Doesn't blow! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 22, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

It's rare to find a course that absolutely maximizes everything it has to work with.

There are three tees for most holes and (with a few exceptions) two concrete pads for every hole. The baskets are all excellent Mach X design, so someone cares enough to put a little extra money into this place.

While the course is pretty open, it does make use of the trees it has to work with. Holes 13-15 make great use of the pine trees, and I wish there were a few more holes featuring these. Hole 10 is the only hole with heavy foliage.

Scenery is nice, as the course is set along a lake. Water comes into play on several early holes, and losing a disc on a windy day is a possibility. Or on a still day if you really yank it.

Navigation is pretty easy. I think I consulted the map two or three times.

Cons:

Very little elevation here.

Not a lot of technical shots.

I played on a weekday, but I wonder about interference from pedestrians on the concrete trails in busier times.

Other Thoughts:

This is not a setting made for a 5-star course. Other than being pretty, it wouldn't appear to be a place that could produce much of a course. Whoever designed this did a great job. I really enjoyed my round here.

Good Course, Busy Park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 26, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Mostly long holes with open grass fields. Well maintained park, multiple paved tees, varied pin placement, and decent signage.
I really enjoy the wooded holes, but there are just a few of these. Water hazards on three holes along the right side, easy enough to avoid getting your disc into the lake.

Cons:

Poor course design for about a quarter of the holes, need to double back for four tees. Hard to find the next tee if you are not familiar with the layout.

Walking/biking trail winds through about half of the course so you will have to avoid hitting people. I once had to skip hole 14 because a family was having a picnic next to the basket.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, I like this course on a slow day. Not too challenging and it seems a bit repetitive to me. Currently, the park is changing the placement of some tees.

Broward County has only four 18-hole courses with one more on the way, but I would have to rank this course near the bottom.

You're already down here, might as well play 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 26, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Pretty good course in a clean, well-maintained, multi -use county park featuring plenty of other activities and amenities.
• Variety: Decent but not outstanding shot variety. Fairway types range from open to moderately wooded, but definitely lean to the more open side of the spectrum. Many holes provide obstacles on only one side of the fairway, allowing you to take a wider, safer (but somewhat longer) route if you prefer. Relatively open design allows for several lines off most tees, but several pins are well-placed/nicely tucked to take advantage of naturally occurring openings in the foliage so that whatever route you take, a well placed shot is required get a good look at the pin through a window. Still, several pins are out in the open, inviting those with the distance to run at them off the tee. Although the middle tees could provide a wider range of distances, you can always choose to mix in some of the longer longs if you feel the need to air it out. Dual pin placements are rotated to help locals avoid boredom. .
• Memorable holes: Water in play on holes 6 and 7, adds visual appeal and really makes you think twice about your shot, especially if there's some wind. My fave is hole 13, playing to a nicely guarded green.
• Aesthetics: Course is pretty lush for the most part with much of it playing along-side or in view of a lake; makes for a very pleasant setting - really feels like you're on vacation.
• Equipment: Nice sized concrete tees for med and long tees, asphalt or grass for shorter red tees. Signage is good and helps with routing. Baskets are in good shape. Scorecard/Map available at the park office.
• Accommodating to beginners and intermediates, as well as advanced players looking for a fun, casual round. Good place to learn the game. Although there's some risk of disc loss, it's not terribly high.
• Plenty of other stuff to occupy young kids before, during, or after a round. Great location you're visiting with family (see other thoughts).

Cons:

• Walk/bike path weaves through a good portion of the course - courtesy and caution are warranted. Because the course is well established and is so open, locals see people play all the time and quite a few actually know what's going on. That said, not all them do, and there's definitely potential for pedestrian injuries if you're not careful.
• Fire Ants: watch where you put your bag down, or they'll be crawling all over it.
• Navigation - Tough for first timers to figure out what's next in several spots, but course actually flows alright once you get used to it. Map's not perfect, but it helps.
• Elevation: nope.
• Has some low lying spots which hold water - gets swampy after SoFla thunderstorms (especially holes 3-4 and 13-14).
• Other park activities attract some pretty big (and often noisy) crowds.

Other Thoughts:

Tradewinds is a nice course, but I can't say the discplay is particularly stimulating - more a pleasant walk in the park than a round of serious discing. Not to sell it short, but it's better suited to leisure golf than it is to tournament play, and that's not a crime. Not every course should be gold level. Even so, it's still a fun round, and the fairly open design means wind can be a factor, which makes things more challenging in and of itself, especially when water's in play.

Visiting parents/in-laws with the wife and/or small kids? Take'em to see Butterfly World (located inside the park). Maybe a mini-steam train ride is more their speed? They offer rides one weekend a month, located on the north side of the park, just across Sample Road... check their website for schedule: http://www.livesteamers.org/Schedule.html
Visiting for the holidays? Play late in the afternoon then let the munchkins check out Tradewinds' Holiday Fantasy of Lights when the sun goes down. ...all this is listed on the park homepage.

If the wife feels like shopping, drop her off at the Festival Flea Market Mall (yes, a Flea Market Mall) directly across the highway from the park. Play a round, then catch up with her for a bite.

Tradewinds Park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 5, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Long & Short concrete tees allow all the distance you can handle, rest rooms by basket 1 and tee 14. Signature hole 6 is picture worthy with its peninsula green. New elevated basket on hole 11 adds to the aesthetics with the water behind the raised basket and adds challenge to the short hole. The majority of the course features long open shots with water and trees along or in fairways to shape shots around or over. New signs are in with hole distance, etc. Benches have been restored.

Cons:

Only one wooded hole 9 and one semi wooded hole 13 if that is your thing. multi use park may sometimes have other events on fairways on weekends. Also a busy park and a lot of holes are by the walking path causing the occasional delay. Ft Lauderdale's 1'st original d/g course can get very busy most afternoons & all weekend.

Other Thoughts:

A lot of work done lately. Broken tees have been replaced. New MachX baskets. Some redesign to enhance the course flow. New trees separate fairway 18 from 1 and 3 from 4. Want to see good video of the park? Check out 2014 South Florida Open on YouTube. The pictures here are from 2009 and the course is a little different.

Tees for all levels 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 28, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This course has some significant pros (but also some significant cons, as you'll see in the next section):
-Two or three tees on each hole. This makes it a perfect course for a family to play together or any group with players of various skill levels. If you are teaching your boyfriend/girlfriend/son/daughter/buddy/etc to play disc golf, bring them here.
-The course is well-maintained and scenic.
-The course has good pin placement on some holes, using the few trees that are on the course and the lake to add a fair amount of challenge to holes.
-The rough is easy to access for poorly thrown discs.
-Free during the week (you only pay on the weekends and holidays, $1.50 per person)
-Parking is really easy and the course was easy to find (just make sure you go to Tradewinds South).

Cons:

-As a first timer, navigating the course is difficult. Pay close attention to the "Next Tee" arrows on the signs at each tee.
-Some of the holes were too open with no trees or obstacles or elevation changes.
-The course plays around a walking/jogging/biking path. Waiting for other users of the park slows down play.

Other Thoughts:

This is a great course for beginners given the junior tee pads on every hole. Again, it's also wonderful for families and groups of people of varying skill levels. I was close to giving the course a score of 3.5, but the heat and waiting for passersby kept it at a 3.0. It's not a course that is worth trekking out of your way to get to, but it's a great local option.
