Pros:

Two tee pads per hole gives you some different lines and shots to make a full 18. A couple open holes with some fun wooded shots to work on your tight lines. Tee signs or numbers to indicate which hole you're on which is very helpful here. Baskets are still in good shape. Park has a basketball hoop and playground for the family to enjoy. Decent mixture of righty/lefty holes. Plays pretty fast as it wraps around the park well.

Cons:

Hole 6/15 share the same tee pad and shot. Some holes play close together 4 and 5s basket. Busy day have to watch for other golfers and can be crammed. Errant shot on 9/18 can be in someone's backyard.

Other Thoughts:

The basketball court here isn't really a court just a concrete slab super weird and if you miss you can roll all the way down hill...which also can happen on your putt on 1 or 10. Overall a decent place to play. Wouldn't drive out of the way but if close by worth the stop to throw

Van Zee Park DGC worth a quick stop 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 13, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Easy to locate, next to the local Fire Station
-Appears to receive little use
-Cement tee pads, two for each of the 9 pins except hole 6/15
-Baskets in good shape, usually visible from the tee pad
-Signs on most holes indicating OB, hole placement, mandatories and distance
-About 20 parking spots, and my rental car was the only one there on a Saturday at 10 AM
-Half in open area, half in shaded grove of trees
-Low potential for losing discs, but there are a few fences that could come into play with an errant drive
-Variety of shots: uphill, flat, and downhill, many with trees, other with steep slopes that make you think about how to keep a disc from rolling away
-Free

Cons:

-Only 9 pins, so I consider this a 9 hole course, not 18 as listed
-Inconsistent signage and markings, but a local fire fighter helped me out with the first few holes
-Longest hole was about 300 ft, and many were 150-175 ft

Other Thoughts:

Van Zee Park has a very appropriate disc golf course for new players, and a fun place to work on upshots for more seasoned players. The possibility of creating safari holes (e.g., playing from tee 9 to pin 1) is very appealing, and could make this more of an attraction for local disc golfers. This was a quick course to play, and a worthwhile stop for me as I headed back to the airport. Not being a local, I am glad I played it, but Bud Pell was a much better course and is nearby.

the hills are alive and rolling 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 7, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

2 sets of pads that make a 9 hole course into 18. Now have signs that show hole 1 pad and hole 10 pad...makes it nice. Bathrooms are available in the summer (weird, they now Sept. have a closed for winter sign, go figure.) Many aces can begotten here and tons of birds of all kinds, however be very careful...the hills are alive and rolling :) Good place to learn all different kinds of throws. And even the experienced players can grumble about a tree or a roll. Fun

Cons:

short, hilly, and bathrooms closed alot. Not alot of parking but not alot of players.

Other Thoughts:

Course is fun and quick to play. It adds to the great and varied courses in Kitsap county.

Other Thoughts:

Very frustrating course. A great tee shot that hits the post should never end up rolling 75 feet down the hill

Elevation and slopes add a nice twist 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 8, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Van Zee is an interesting nine hole in the paradise of disc golf that is Kitsap County. I'm becoming very biased about Kitsap and trying to find some way to get my job to move me over there so I don't have to pay a hefty fee on a ferry or a $5 toll on a bridge every time that I want to disc over there... But I digress.

Van Zee is the first true 9-hole I've played that has multiple teepads... Which I guess makes it an 18. The challenge is pretty low overall, with the length of the harder tees still being short enough for you to leave your drivers in the car. What Van Zee pulls off that most other beginner courses don't is that it keeps the difficulty up with sloped putting greens. Some form of elevation comes into play on every single hole here, and it's easy to turn a birdie or par putt into a bogey or double bogey thanks to the immense rollaway potential. I think this is a pro because it really makes you think about your approach more thoroughly than you would normally have to.

The concrete teepads were... Concrete. Always a pro on any course. The baskets were in good condition and all there, so there's another one. I feel like this is a lazy review so far, but this course kind of makes me feel lazy. Sorry.

Although the course felt a tiny bit lefty friendly, I did appreciate the use of the elevation, with a few up- and down-hill shots, and (as I already said) some type of elevation change or slope on every hole.

The course seems to be in a disc golf only section of the park, but it was hard to tell when I was there because they were setting up for Cub Scout Day Camp and I had to throw behind an archery range. I think that's great and would add an entirely new form of challenge to every course. It should become PDGA mandatory.

Favorite hole: Hole 8 from the long tee was the best one on this course. It was a short little RHFH snap with a mid (a Drone in my case), but is fun and just drools "birdie" when you hit it right... Or bogey if you hit a tree or roll down to the port a johns.

Cons:

I suppose that the short length of the holes would be considered a con. The elevation isn't really extreme enough to make 200' holes very challenging. Nine hole courses in general seem to keep the challenge low (my total of below par rounds on 9's vs 18's will attest to that), and this course fits that bill. The multiple teepads are a nice thing to advertise, but they don't really add anything to the experience. You just wind up throwing from a different distance or angle, but pretty much have the same line available to you. The four teepads on the way to basket 2 were just confusing. I know which were official for it, but the other two just seemed to be there to be ornery.

Least favorite hole: Hole 7. Too short, too boring... I probably should have thrown a thumber with my putter so I would have something interesting to say about it.

Other Thoughts:

Overall this isa fun little 9-hole with a unique challenge that you don't usually find. It's a great warmup course on your way up to Silverdale or Poulsbo from the Tacoma area, but unfortunately isn't much more than that. If you live in the area and want somewhere to introduce your friends to the beautiful sport that you play, this may be the course for you. It depends on the friend I guess... If they're easily frustrated they might quit after watching their 5th shot roll down the hill on hole 1. If that happens just take them to Bud Pell and they'll quit complaining about Van Zee. I think Van Zee has its merits, but it pales so much in comparison to all of the other courses nearby that it just isn't worth writing home about.

Nice Course for Beginners 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 16, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- "Red" and "Blue" approaches are present for each basket.
- The tees boxes are all flat and most are made of cement (a couple of the alternate tees are still dirt)
- Plenty of parking
- There is a playground present (with picnic tables and bathrooms) for the kids.
- This is a quick course and a good place to go if you only have an hour or so to play. Going with a group of 3 or 4people will take about 30 - 45 minutes for one round.
- The park was recently cleaned up. All the blackberries, weeds, bushes and errant trees have been removed.
- Good beginner course. Most, if not all the distances range from around 150 - 200 feet.
- Decent chance of getting a birdie or two each round you play.

Cons:

- Course is a little short, only 9 holes.
- Residential houses are close by with a couple of opportunities to accidentally throw a disk into someone's fenced back yard.
- Some interesting, swirling winds go rolling through the park most of the time.
- A couple of holes exist near a busy street. The opportunity exists to throw into traffic.
- The course tends to get busy on evenings and some weekends.

Other Thoughts:

Despite the small size, this is one of my favorite courses (it doesn't hurt that it is local for me). I would consider Van Zee a course well suited for beginners but there are still one or two challenging holes if you decide to play from the long tees.

Cozy Game 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 8, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Great use of a small area.
- Can bring the kids. They can play at the playground.
- Both easy/hard tees.
- Great course for quick games.
- Hole 5 was missing for a long time, but has been replaced, making this course so much better.
- Most of the course is wooded providing cool shade for hot days.
- The shots are tricky making up for the shorter distances to the baskets.

Cons:

- A few of the baskets are close to fenced property: hole 6 is next to a yard which sometimes has a couple loud dogs roaming within. Have to try not to throw into the yard; basket 8 has a yard behind it. I often throw over the fence. Luckily the house there is currently abandoned; hole 7 and 8 are close to the road. If you pull it badly, you may toss it into the road. But 'tis fairly difficult to do.

My firt time at VanZee 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 15, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Liked that it was close to home, in a neat little neighborhood park and with being a 9 hole course the family was able to get through it pretty quickly. There seemed to be a good mix of challenging parts and some straight shots too.

Cons:

The marking on a few holes could be better. We found ourselves looking around for the next tee and hole on a few. The basket for 5 was gone all together, which meant we had to search for awhile just to find out the intended spot to shoot for. We just drew a circle in the dirt around the basket anchor that was in the ground and shot for that. There were a couple of holes that were a tad close to private property fence lines, so we had to be careful there.

Other Thoughts:

This was the second time for me to be out disk golfing...ever, and the rest of the family's first. We all enjoyed it, and will coming back here for a lot more rounds now that we know the layout of the course.

Van Zee 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 4, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Concrete Tees
- Quality baskets
-An open field to practice your shots before or after a game
-Good course for a beginner
-Multiple tees

Cons:

- Multiple concrete slabs all over the place can be confusing
-Lack of next tee signage
-No hole layout signs on the holes
-Most holes are really short, even for a beginner
-only 9 holes. with no possibility for expansion

Other Thoughts:

All in all, not a horrible course, but with courses like NAD and Dalaiwood not far away this course can't compare. Not bad if you're looking for a quick game and you're not far away. But i wouldn't go out of my way to play this course.
UPDATE: Well the layout has been switched up a bit and the long tees have been converted to holes 10-18, making van zee and 18 hole course now. In addition to this the local club has done a lot of work clearing out the park. All these things make it a slightly better course, although it still doesn't hold a candle to the other courses in kitsap county.

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 25, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Course was recently adjusted to reduce the chance of disc flying OB into fenced neighborhood. Still need to be a bit careful on number 8.
- Beginner friendly.
- Quick to play if you don't have much time.
- Quality baskets (not top-quality).
- Despite being short, the holes do present some interesting play. Number one has a terrific hill that can have your disc rolling all the way back to you. Number nine is open and long enough that I am throwing as far as I can from the alternate tee (disclaimer: I don't throw very far).
- Tees are numbered and have concrete pads.
- Plenty of open space in the park for field practice if the baseball field is not in use.
- Low risk of lost discs.
- Easy to manage with a stroller. Well, okay the hill is steep enough that my wife freaks out and thinks our baby is going to roll away, but she's a little panicky in that motherly way.
- There a swingset and picnic facilities. Also a small jungle-gym thing. Good for the kids after a round.
- Good parking.

Cons:

- There are a number of concrete pads on the course that are not used, lending some confusion to play.
- Multi-use area. A couple of times I have had non-golfers throw my disc back to me trying to be helpful. Not much of a concern outside holes one and nine.
- There are only 9 holes, with no room for expansion.

Other Thoughts:

- The challenge level is low. This is a positive given the other courses in the area.

Up and Down! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 31, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

lots of great uses of elevation.
some shots were pretty technical
good signage
cement teepads
baskets caught well (even though i drilled the chains with my drive on hole 3 - my first ace!!! - but the disc popped out... so it was a no-go for me.)
two tee pads for each hole-although they don't always drastically change the shot.
nice park location, including large ball field and playground.

Cons:

short course. (but they fit all 9 holes in to a small park without disturbing other activities that may be going on in the park - props for that!)
potential to throw into neighboring houses and the street on 3, 6, 7, and 8.

Other Thoughts:

It was a lot of fun to play Van Zee Park Disc Golf. I live in Shelton, and I met a friend there. two other guys were on the course on the wednesday morning we played.

I really enjoyed the use of elevation on the course.
the holes were well thought out for the small space available.

unfortunately, it was a very easy course. birdies are attainable pretty easily on every hole, par is doable with eyes closed unless you really shank a tree or over throw a basket and roll down a hill.

i don't think i'd travel here to play it again, but i enjoyed my 3 times through the course in 1.5 hours!

Van Zee Park 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 19, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

When entering this friendly quaint neighborhood park in Port Orchard you notice that is located primarily on a slope with several trees set in the top right corner of the park. At the base of the park where you enter there is a multi purpose field (allowing for field work when other park users are not present).

Another thing which stands out is the massive cement basketball court that almost looks like a skating rink from the parking lot. The court was dug out of the ground towards the top of the hill and is quite large (creating an OB on holes 6 and 7).

The course is perfect for intermediate players looking to find their game. Van Zee is also great to practice at for advanced players hoping to improve their short game. Even though most of the holes were fairly short (longest being 295 feet), the lines were clean and well thought out. Holes one, six, and nine are wide open with the rest playing through the trees. The holes in the trees are fairly narrow but show multiple approaches.

The dual tee pads is a great addition although the original tee pads are in better shape due to being all cement. The baskets are Mach II's which are suitable for this course and catch fairly well. The course was easy to navigate for the most part with ample signage and numbered baskets.

Cons:

The alternate tee pads were dirt which can be troublesome in the northwest during the winter months. Some of the tee pads in general seem to be close to the baskets from the previous holes (due to the size of the park). Last, a few holes run along neighboring homes (holes three and four come to mind) and there is a large possibility that a disc will fly over the fence whether it be from a deflection or not so watch out and choose your line carefully!

Other Thoughts:

This course was a lot of fun! I enjoyed the simplicity and yet the challenge of scoring well. This would be a great course to live near because it allows for short quick rounds if necessary. I wouldn't want this as my home course but it would be a great alternative. Port Orchard and Bremerton are really coming alive in the recent years and the courses are all within a reasonable drive. I had the privilege of playing three courses this day with Van Zee being the first. It was great to play a quick warm up round and then move on to Kitsap Fairgrounds then finally Fredericksen. All in all I would say I had another great day playing in the magical northwest!

Pros:

Nice use of the limited space.
Good use of elevation change, dog legs and hillside holes, this adds challenge to a short course.
Dual Tees.
Solid baskets.
Good signage, navigation was simple.
Fun shots, some holes have good dual options.

Cons:

Lack of distance, longest hole 286 most holes 180-220.
Most of the dual tees don't really change or add to the hole.
a number of holes are very wide open.
Some of the forest holes are too close together.
Field holes intersect multi-use park areas.
Some tees are beat up and some are natural mud pits.

Other Thoughts:

I thoroughly enjoyed my round at Van Zee, I took a first timer and it was a great introductory course, the wind and hills add much needed difficulty to a very short course overall. I liked the dual tees but was underwhelmed in their execution, only a few would really change my approach to the hole, some could definitely be extended. The Markings were nice, it seems a true first timer could easily figure out the layout, especially with the baskets number marked.

Short course, good for midrange practice 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 29, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Lots of technical, wooded holes, which calls for you to utilize your mid range shots more.
- Casual and relaxed course with no long holes to worry about.
- Little chance to lose a disc unless you really shank one.
- Baskets and teepads are in good condition.
- Course is pretty easy to follow without a map. The only exception is hole 3 can be a little confusing as it looks like the teepad wants you to throw of the back.
- There are amature teepads as well as pro teepads. And although there isn't much difference from the two, it's nice that they are available.

Cons:

- Not a lot of variety as far as types of shots go. I used my Skeeter on almost every drive.
- Nettles are surrounding a lot of the wooded holes, so be careful.

Other Thoughts:

This is a fun course to take new players to or to have a quick round for practicing you mid-range shots and short drives. There isn't any need for your drivers if you can throw a mid-range 250' and most of the holes, although wooded, are fairly open. Only one or two of the holes have trees that require some tricky shots.

I almost missed my ferry! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 19, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Excellent job with the space presented, the designer knew what they were doing. The ways of which the elevation comes into play make the park very fun to play. Nicely done short technical holes with lots of trees made my putter fear for it's life. The whole family can play this course and get a decent score too. There was no signs or markers but the course was easy to navigate and there was no other golfers in the park. There is even enough open field near the parking lot to practice drives on. There is even concrete tee pads here now thanks to the local club.

Cons:

This park is short but it's in a small park so this is to be expected so no long bombs, mostly mid range and putting. A couple of the holes border other people's property line with a fence so watch out you don't throw it over.

Other Thoughts:

There was a group of about 10 teenagers in the wooded area of the park that were looking like they were up to no good and were in my way for one hole so I had to skip it, not sure if this is common place but it was a little bit of a drag. Overall not a bad little course, if I'm back Playing NAD in Bremerton, I will stop by after to play a round or two.

nice course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 15, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is not just another nine hole park course, for starters it has ten holes. This piece of land offers variety in that some holes are open some are tight and there is rolling terrain to deal with that generate some decent up and downhill shots. The designers get a lot of use out of the limited area that is provided. Each hole has cement tee pads and a marker and is easy to navigate. Most of the course spirals around a little forest in the back area of the park. The upkeep at this park is tiptop I didn't see any trash and the grass was mowed nicely. This park is a great spot for beginners or a quick round.

Cons:

Van Zee is a pretty small neighborhood park, as such, the course is tight and short. When I played, number ten was a temporary basket that was rolled over and propped up next to some sort of utility shed so that it was out of the way of a baseball field that it shares space with. Perhaps it was the permanent basket that was dug out of the ground as it was incased in concrete at the base. In some cases in order to have a course we have to share the space, a typical nuisance of the multi use park course. The holes that border along the park boundary do not leave a player much room for error. Chuck one over somehow and you may find yourself climbing a six foot chainlink fence into a neighbors yard who no doubt has grown a dislike for our beloved sport. As a beginner course I found the etiquette to be lacking, my group was thrown into a couple of times.

Other Thoughts:

With only one hole being more than 250 feet, let the ace runs fly! The parking situation is a little tight. I look forward to playing this course again someday.

Better than you think? 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 2, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

A nice combination 2 open field holes, 2 holes with big elevation drop offs, and the rest of the 10 are wooded and technical. A pretty park for a small neighborhood park. Credit to the designers for making a really good functional course for the space involved.

Cons:

Holes 1 and 10 could be problematic if there are people playing on the open fields. Four of the baskets are on slopes so you could get some ugly rollers off a basket dink. Just part of the game, right!

Other Thoughts:

Well designed course for the space available. At first you may not think that this course will amount to much. There are only 10 holes but after playing a few times I actually think that EVERY hole is interesting. There are alternate tee pads. If you play each tee pad once you can get in a round of 20 holes.

Recreational Course With Some Fun Throws! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 14, 2008 Played the course:never

Pros:

This is just your basic little neighborhood course that plays around a ballfield and a reservoir. Because most of it is hilly, there are some fun, short but challenging throws to be had. Each hole has a short cement tee pad (you really don't need a longer approach here) and a extra solid post indicating the hole #. There are two sets of tees, the longer set usually add 10-20 ft. to the hole. The longest hole is a 286 ft. open uphill shot to a basket that sits in the middle of the field. The course designer did the best with what he to work with on this 8.6 acre site.

Cons:

There is a one minor design flaw and one major design flaw. The minor flaw is that holes #1 and #10 (this is a 10 hole course) play into the two ballfields. I was told this is sometimes a problem during baseball season. The major problem that I see is that #'s 3, 5, and 7 all border on the park boundary fence next to private homes. On #3, my drive hit a tree and bounced over the 6 ft. chain link fence. I couldn't reach it with a stick so had to climb over the fence to retrieve it. # 5 is worse. A new home is being built on the right side of fairway. The house is very, very close to the park boundary fence and many discs will either anhyser over this fence or hit the trees and carom over. I hope these are understanding neighbors and I hope the golfers treat them with the utmost respect. It's a problem waiting to happen.

Other Thoughts:

Too often I hear courses like this one put down by the disc golfing community. But when I left today, there were two groups playing. The first was two junior high boys. The second was two adult men, beginners, along with a seven year old. This course was perfect for them. It'll be a while before they're all ready for DeLaveaga.
