Ball golf style! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 8, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Course has changed significantly. So let's start this all over. Some of the boring holes are no longer existent. That's an improvement to this course. Some tee pads are in the same spot with different pin locations and are more unique. It starts with a newly designed hole. A LEGIT deuce or die with OB everywhere. #2 is probably the best example of "more unique." The pad is the same as the old hole 3. The pin placement is up and over a hill to the left. The pin is next to a couple of rocks. That to me is a standout hole.

-The old 12 and 13 were combined to make the new #13. Fun uphill par 4 about 500'. Could be played as a dogleg right over the volleyball court, or be played in a straight line over a few trees. Not sure if the volleyball court is OB, but if so then this is a legit par 4!

-You still get to play the tunnel shot by the tennis courts and the line of trees (#5) and the big downhill hole by the building which was easily the best hole before the changes (#14). Now it's debatable on what the best hole is with a few of the new ones here.

-Primarily open. A few holes here (#6, #16, and #18) are what I'd call "show off" holes for big arms. The others are mostly open as well but are shot shaping holes because there is a lot of OB here.

-The people working at the rec center are great about returning lost discs if you have your name on them and are turned in. Especially if your shot doesn't fade over the building on #14.

-Another improvement made was that #17's pad is no longer in front of the pine tree on #16's green. It was nearly impossible to have a good run up on that pad. Now it's by the walking track.

-New tee signs. Holes #11 and #17 are hard to find, but are marked on U disc. Get the app. The signs I could not find on #11 or #17 but it seemed clear they were by the track.

Cons:

-The danger issue lingers still. You're playing by the walking trails, ball fields, walking track. This place is the last thing from secluded, so you'll see plenty of pedestrians.

-Despite the holes being better from the track. You're still, well..... pretty much teeing off on the track on #11 and #17.

-#18 is by a soccer field and is a hindrance to soccer players.

Other Thoughts:

-This course can be a danger to other locals. But at least they can see how fun disc golf is. For the limited space, this course is well thought out for the most part. I thought this course was pretty good initially and I think it's a little better now. I'm upvoting it to a 3.5.

-If you don't like playing around athletic fields, roads, or railroads, this course is not for you. But chances are, there'd be some holes that you like.

-Signature holes would include:

#2: Difficult par 3. Up and over a hill toward the creek. You'd have to really rip it to go in there, but if you go long, you'll have a difficult putt out of the overgrowth.

#5: Very unique tunnel shot between mature pine trees and the tennis court.

#13: Fun par 4 around a volleyball court. Intimidating, but well designed.

#14: Major downhill bomb over the building or around it. Your choice!

Good Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 3, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Has some good variety of difficulty of holes: some flat, some elevated, some wide open & some tight
- Some very picturesque holes
- The back nine is a great spot for beginners with most of the holes being wide open

Cons:

- Much of the course has a walking track, dog park, or Skatepark around it, so you have to wait & watch for walkers
- The second hole is about half a mile from the #1 basket. You need to get a map (from front desk) to find it if it is your first time

Other Thoughts:

-Played on a wet day and the grass was about 3 inches tall. Be sure to bring a change of shoes.

Needs some love and attention 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 19, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course itself is a winner. 14 over the Rec Center is a fun shot. If you find my driver in the weeds to the left of the fairway call me. By the way, that isn't poison ivy, get in there.

Cons:

The layout, pin info plaques, and hole numbers on the baskets are all screwed up. This course is in serious need of remarking by the city and could really benefit from directional plaques at the bottom of the baskets to direct players to the next tee.

Other Thoughts:

It is entirely possible to shoot at the wrong pin on #2, you may never find #3 tee, and when driving on holes 4, 5, 7 you will be throwing at baskets with the wrong numbers on them. I loved the feel of the course but it needs some attention by the Parks department.

Great scenery, fun course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 13, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Waynesville DGC has some obvious drawbacks as a course, but it's really one of my personal favorites in North Carolina due to the surrounding beauty of the location. Yes, it's situated in a busy, multi-use park. But the mountains surrounding the area and the course itself are the perfect setting for disc golf.

+ Waynesville DGC scores well on the Fun Scale for me. It has one of my favorite holes of any course I've played, #14, which is a 425 foot par 3 from the top of a (60-foot?) hill over the two-story Waynesville Rec Center.

+ You won't find many courses with prettier surroundings. Mountains all around. A stream runs through the course. It's just a beautiful area and a great setting for disc golf.

+ Good navigation and informative tee signs. New players won't have a problem. There is a long walk between the holes on the Rec Center/track side of the course and the tennis courts/dog park side of the course.

+ Good baskets and tees.

+ Interesting use of manmade obstacles on the course: a tunnel shot through trees and a chain-link fence by the tennis court, a baseball field fence, railroad tracks, the roof of a building!

+ Not a pro or con, but this is a very wide open course. If you love "park style" or "ball golf style" courses, you'll love this one.

+ Lots of other recreation opportunities at this campus, if you are interested: track, walking paths, tennis court, baseball fields, dog park, plus the indoor facilities.

Cons:

Again, there are some clear limitations here. This may not be a destination course in terms of challenge or design, but it's so beautiful here, I believe it's worth the trip. Regardless, here are the flaws:

- It's a busy public park, so if you play at peak hours, there will be baseball players, joggers, and dog walkers to contend with. This is by far the biggest con of this course. And I would say this is a pretty big con. You need to be very aware of other people before you throw. Be careful.

- Many holes are basic, wide-open, and lacking the technicality and challenge that very good tracks have.

Other Thoughts:

If you're in Western NC, Waynesville is a great place to stop for a fun, scenic round of disc golf.

Better than advertised 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 4, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Challenging holes.
-Given OB added to degree of difficulty.
-The course forced you to place shots in the right spot in order to shoot well.
-Creeks were used effectively. (new hole 2 is my fav.)
-Basket caught the disc really well.
-Space was utilized well (see my comments in other thoughts regarding the new design)

Cons:

-Small concrete tee pads and some mulch pads. I hear plans to fix this.
-Pedestrians and other non disc golfers can get in the way.
-Course plays through the busy park and this poses a safety issue.

My thoughts on how to solve some of the safety problems:
-Hole 1 should never be put in the long position. I never got to play it there and while it looked sweet, it poses waaaaay too much risk to property and people.
-Hole 4 should always be in the short position and have the mando left of the first tree in front of the tee. Although this makes this hole a repetitive shot like hole 3, it does provide the best safety option. The pavilion and playground are just too close to the long pin.
-Hole 11 should never be put in the short position. Give that the best route for that shot is to go over the parking lot, it poses too much risk to personal property. I skipped down to the basket off the parking lot if that gives you any indication of what my disc's flight path was.
-Hole 15 should be kept in the short position. Although it poses no real safety issue, the long pin location crosses 16's tee box and fairway. This is a safety issue for disc golfers.
-Hole 18 like I said before should stay in the short pin but make the long tee pad permanent with the double mando and OB left of path and beyond.

I have no doubt that these changes are in the works. I know Tim and all the faithful disc golfers who play Waynesville want their course to be top notch.

Other Thoughts:

The course has gone through a makeover since Tim Petrea became the caretaker. The original design was well thought out and used the land to the max. With recent construction and the overwhelming use of the park by non disc golfers, the course needed an update. I have to say that Tim and his crew along with the help of all the Waynesville locals did a great job with the redesign. Hole 2 is now one of my favorite holes of all time and although it yielded no birdies to me it provided me with a tough shot but fair one. The way Tommy Holbrook used the old hole 2 basket as the new hole 7 was just awesome. To have a big hyzer shot to the hill was a risk/reward elevation shot that the course needed. The new hole 8 with the 35ft man made island was a great addition as well. It was a birdie hole but the added circle just made it more fun. The new 10 tee was really sweet. A bomber over the track field with OB looming made this a great, well thought out tee spot. The new longer tee on 18 was really sweet as well. Way to go Tommy for the new design. I'd go so far as to say make that the permanent tee and keep the basket in the short pin. This would cut down on non disc golfers getting in the way of that hole while making the tee shot tougher with the double mando and OB path and beyond to the left. Given better tees, better defined OB lines, and some reassurance that non disc golfers are safe and out of the way I'd go so far as to rate this course a 4.

Waynesville DGC 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 4, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The holes were placed very well! Discatcher baskets. Liked that there were several creeks on the course! I loved hole 12 at the long position. Hole 2 would probably be my favorite hole!

Cons:

Seemed easy to lose a disc. Birdie shots were few unless you could really sling it! On a normal day it seemed like it would be harder to play just because of foot traffic on walking trails and many of the holes had them around. Some mulch tees which was a safety issue. some holes i was a little nervous to throw on mulch. Concrete tees were too small.

Other Thoughts:

Over all good course I thought! Some pretty challenging shots with the longe holes! I recently played a tournament and there were a lot of OB's which made the course quite challenging. Should be a really fun course worth the drive to play it after some of the said improvements to be made.

Cons:

*Although the tee pads are concrete, they are very small.

*Navigation the first time around can be difficult.

Best course in the area 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 1, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Paved tee pads. Easy to follow course once you know how to navigate from 1 to 2, then from 8 to 9. Excellent mix of long and short holes. Some really technical shots needed for some. A few holes you can literally just grip it and rip it (16 is a semi short par 4 on a slight downhill so if you have a lot of power, this is your go-to eagle hole). The scenery is beautiful and it is right in town so a food break wont be inconvenient.

Cons:

Some of the tee boxes are painted with coats of blue paint. If you play in the morning dew or after a rain, it's like driving from a frozen water puddle. A train will sometimes go right through the middle of the course laying on it's horn while it slowly rolls through. Don't rush somebody to shoot because it is horrible loud.

Other Thoughts:

I used to live 40 minutes from this course and I would drive past 3 other courses in order to play here twice a week. If you are in NC west of asheville, you want to play this course.

It's not all bad. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 26, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Clearly marked Teepads...You won't find those in Franklin or Sylva.
- Pretty much impossible to lose a disc unless you shank #14 really bad
- mostly flat easier for players out of shape or older in age with bad knees
- Bathrooms, Water Fountains and plenty of benches.
- Signs are posted clearly and often warning people it's a disk golf course and to watch out for flying discs.

Cons:

- At Times the course seems rather tightly done together. Bad throws can end you up in Tennis Courts, across fences, in doggie parks or on the volleyball court.
- A parking lot is in play on 3 or 4 holes. Could be too easy to hit a car.
- The course sometimes focuses more on length and less on approach...Sometimes it feels like "Oh, time to air it out...And rinse and repeat.

Other Thoughts:

Overall I'd play the course again, it's a solid course, but it seems to praise driving power over accuracy.

OmniOB 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 3, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Two pin positions per hole.

Cons:

Out-of-bounds looming on every hole. Multiple opportunities to negatively interact with: parking lots, roads, walking paths, dog park, swift-running stream, railroad tracks, tennis courts, softball field, running track, building, junkyard.

Other Thoughts:

The course suffers from a common malady - it is squeezed into the patchy amount of available open spaces of a multi-purpose park, thereby offering many chances to yell "fore", and/or get your insurance card out.

Other than uphill number-12, or major downhill number-14, the course is extremely flat. Long basket-2 sits on a small hill, but requires a throw over teepad-3. Most holes, other than the few near the railroad tracks, are quite open - straight-on, or swinging wide right-to-left, will work on most holes.

About 2/3rds of the tees are 6'x6' concrete, with the walking path doubling as a teepad the other 1/3rd. Teesigns will list the distances to the two pin positions, but doesn't indicate in which the basket is presently located.

Navigation tips: the map shows where the tees, not the baskets, are located. After number-1, a sign directs you down road/across bridge. Numbers 2-5 play in the direction you just headed, while 6-8 return you towards basket-1. Numbers 9-11 play in a counter-clockwise direction around the ball field, while numbers 12-15 play clockwise around the building. Number-16 plays across the track, and numbers 17-18 parallel the creek/walking path. Tee-4 is between the railroad tracks and the midpoint of the dog park.

Try to play when there are not many other park users present.

Inconceivable 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 24, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Directions to the course were good, except that the drug store on the corner is not an Eckerds but it is a Rite Aid. Hole 1 was easy to find. The mountain stream visible from many holes is true eye candy. It made a great pit stop on my drive.

Cons:

Did anyone think about the safey of the other park users? Nearly every hole on the course had potential for hitting walkers on the walking path or the track and field track, people in the dog park, people in the tennis courts and people on the softball fields. I saw multiple drives go into the parking lot on hole 1 from other players I observed. The ball field is in play there also. I did eventually find hole 2. I don't mind the transition and I should have printed out a map before I left home. #4 is next to a dog park with a 4' fence. I refused to play that hole lest I let one go early. #7 is sanwiched in between tennis courts and R/R tracks. Although the fairway has a low canopy of beutiful hemlocks, it is not reasonable to expect that some shots will not fight their way into the tennis courts or over onto the tracks. #8 is beside a 25mph road, not a 10-15 mph park road with speed bumps but a through road. #9 and 10 allow shots to go into the softball fields with ease. A great long downhill hole can have discs turn over into a parking lot obscured from view by the rec center building or they could head over into the junkyard. The final holes play across a track and field track and walking paths and have a coupld of crossing fairways. I saw one person throw a disc and hit a walker on the track and field track. I saw discs fly into the junkyard. I saw people throw into the softball field.

Other Thoughts:

This is the conundrum of an area that would not have a course unles it was crammed into this park. Do you go ahead and design the course or do you go without? Safety is a huge concern and there is no room for safety and disc golf in this park. I bear no ill will against the designer. It was that perons choice to pursue disc golf here. Some safety could have been mitigated by greatly shortening the course, but it could still not have been made safe enough.

Nice walk in the Park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 26, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Great course for beginners and Pros! This course has a nice layout given it is in a multi-use park. I have played many multi-use DGC facilities across the country and this course has a unique design to accommodate all park users.
Weekends are sometimes busy with other park activities but during the week, the course and park can be all yours! There is a good mixture of long holes and ace runs and the beauty of the natural surroundings are awesome! Mountain views and trout streams enhance the scenery of this great park!

Cons:

I have liked every course that I've played because I know and respect all of the work that goes into the creation, install and maintenance
of a disc golf course!

Other Thoughts:

I totally disagree with Mr. McDaniel. I have played the sport for over 30 year and I have come to the conclusion that safety is in the hands of the Disc Golf player not necessarily the course. Common sense, patience and good diplomacy are the best practices!

Fun once you figure it out (Updated) 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 14, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Open throwing on most holes, allows you to work on your throws without tree worry
- Great public area and a great walk to each hole.
- Good for beginners if they have someone that has played the course before, or you take a map with you

Cons:

- Confusing to find each hole at times, but after first run though you will get the hang of it
- The rec center didn't have maps, and even when I asked they acted like they had never heard of disc golf.
- Some holes could do with a little more distance.

Other Thoughts:

Enjoyed this course quite a bit, played it by myself the first time. I would suggest you run it with someone that has before, as the flow is a bit confusing without a little help the first time. Only real complaint I have is some of the holes were short and I didn't see much support from the local DG community. Would suggest anyone that enjoys DG to give it a throw.

It's in the Mountains, but... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 15, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Full 18 hole course with concrete tee pads at all holes. Pads are in good shape, and flush with the surrounding ground. Signs were decent showing multiple basket positions, length and layout of hole. Large park with lots of other park amenities around. Trails, running track, fields etc. Some gazebos and picnic areas also. Course designer should be given an award for getting a course into this park. For what there was to work with this course does a good job.

Cons:

Pads are very short on most holes. The holes with pads on the paved trail are plenty big though. Small pads are flush with ground so I didn't have a problem. Some may be more picky.

Other than #14 there isn't really any interesting or fun holes. Nothing memorable that you'll break out a camera to get a picture of.

In many places course plays close to or through other areas that could be used by park users. Fences and the railroad tracks also come into play on several holes. You are definitely not secluded from other park users. On #16 you even throw over the paved running track. Not great, safe or scenic.

Navigation and transitions from hole to hole is not great. After #1 you must cross the road and backtrack to find #2. I started playing 9 before I realized I was all screwed up.

Most holes are just straight shots through a relatively open field. This is not wooded NC golf. No real line shaping takes place here.

There may have been some mountain or hill views, but this is not a scenic course. There is also very little elevation. Pretty much flat, straight shot after flat straight shot. Yawn.

Other Thoughts:

While they did do a good job to squeeze a course into this park it didn't result in anything more than a decent place to practice for the local players. If you're cruising along I-40 and want to play some good NC golf, pass this one by and head to other courses in Western Carolina. If you do decide to stop and play make sure you bring a map to find your way around, and hang in there. Most of this course will put you to sleep, but at least you get to play #14. It's a nice tee shot off a hill, down a tree lined fairway curving over 400' to the basket. Savor that hole cause it's all you'll remember after playing a round at Waynesville.

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 23, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Wide variety of holes. Hole #14 is awesome! One of my favorite holes I've played in WNC.

- Overall it's a flat course. I think there are only 2 holes that change elevation significantly. A flat course is a nice change of pace for being in the mountains.

Cons:

- Some of the tees (that are painted blue) can get slick when wet.

- At first I liked the extensive OB list. After playing through the course more than once OB starts to get a little exhausting. There are a few of them that there's really no good reason for.

- It wasn't readily apparent where to get maps when I saw there weren't any at the kiosk. I went inside the Rec Center and they had plenty of maps and scorecards.

- This is a shared park so there can be lots of people walking around. Might have to wait a few times but not really a big deal. Just need to be aware.

Other Thoughts:

I'm really glad Waynesville has this course (actually the whole park facility was relatively impressive). For such a small town it's nice for the locals to have something like this. The course plays around the entire complex so you really get to see it all.

Pros:

- That there is a disc golf course there at all.
- pretty challenging course, i am used to courses that play in the woods and this was a pleasent suprise. I really liked the way the course uses the obstacles other than trees to form the course (ie an outfield fence, the hourse grounds bleachers, etc)
- I loved the signs around the walking track as a warning.
- The sinage was good adequate.
- The mountain views and the creek that runs through the park are spectacular.

Cons:

- The sign at the beginning of the course was not very acruate, navigating the course was not difficult but would have been easier with an up-to-date map.
- There were no maps or scorecards in the box at the info area.
- There were many people at the park and some were completely unaware what was going on.

Other Thoughts:

I played this course with my wife and boys and had a good time. Very kid friendly and relatively easy for them due to not having to risk loosing disc. My wife really enjoyed the walk through the park and along the creek. I think the park designers had a great plan but need to maintain the course a little better.

Hits and misses - just don't hit anyone 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 6, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Pleasantly surprising fun, mountain course. One of the most unique courses I've ever played.
- Interesting course layout, with holes #1, 9 - 18 playing around the rec center; #2 - 8 playing across the street, and throughout the other park of the park. Holes around the rec center are more wide open; the other holes are much tighter, more obstacles. As stated in other reviews, and below, holes #2 - 8 do cross paths with other park users/activities, which could affect play.
- #2 is a great hole in its long, alternate location. The basket is up on a small hill, taking two solid shots to reach. I hope they make this alternate location the regular one. #3 & 6 are tight, tunnel shots that offer a nice challenge.
- I enjoyed the holes playing next to the railroad track, especially #4 & 5. It's an interesting setting, that is until you land a disc on the rocks.
- Very good use of elevation on the back nine. I feel #14 is the course's signature hole. 475 ft downhill that plays behind/along the rec center to a basket close to some thick rough. With the elevation drop-off, it's a great sight to see your shot go sailing.
- Great views of the mountains all around you. You can see the rolling hills everywhere you turn. You get the best views playing at the top of the course on #13 & 14. Make sure to take in the fantastic view playing these two holes.
- Good course map on the kiosk by #1 (same map as on this site). Basic, descriptive tee signs.

Cons:

Tee pads are way too short. You can only get a 1-step run-up, 2 if you're lucky.
- Hole lengths weren't consistent. Some were in long positions, some in short. A sign on the kiosk by hole #1 will help avoid any confusion. Also, #2 was in its long, alternate location, with the basket on top of a hill. It's longer than the 375 ft length listed on the sign, so that will need to be corrected.
- Concerns about interference from other park users/games taking place cannot be overstated. By my count, hole #2 - 9, 16 & 18 could be unplayable at times, or be forced to alternate tees, because of other park activities. I hope this is only a once-in-a-while/weekly problem, not a regular issue.
- There are some weird transitions between holes. From #1 to 2 & 8 to 9, you have to walk down, and cross over, the street to play the next hole. The transition from #3 to 4 wasn't clear, so an arrow would be helpful to keep from having to walk the entire way around the fenced-in dog park.
- Some people probably won't like playing so close/over the railroad tracks or fences that come into play on holes #4 - 8. You especially have to be careful of not throwing into the dog park on #4 or you might end up with a chewed up disc.
- For being a mountain course, there's a lack of major obstacles/trees, especially on the holes that play around the rec center.

Other Thoughts:

This course actually exceeded my expectations. With all the concerns over spacing, I had some concerns about this course. I had no problem with any of that, but I did play on a Sunday morning, probably the emptiest the park is all week.
- There are plenty of fun holes. As you can see in the pics, the alternate location for #2, with the basket on the hill, is a cool setup. Even the tight, tunnel shots on #3 & 6 were nice, little challenges.
- It would have been nice to have at least one wooded hole and/or a hole playing over the big creek that runs to the left of #18. There were some nice woods on the other side of the creek, so it seems the possibility would be there.
- My favorite holes were #2 (with the basket on the hill) & 14 (the long, downhill hole). #13 was also very good - 466 ft, open, slightly uphill, with the big slope to the right. Not overly difficult, but was fun.
- Being an out-of-towner, I don't know how often problems arise with hole interference from other park activities. I'm giving this course a 3.0 with the benefit of the doubt it's not a regular issue. If this was a regular issue, including an issue at peak times (evenings/weekends), I'd drop the rating to 2.5 (or even 2.0 if it's a major/all-the-time problem) because that would have a legitimate effect on one's ability to play. Based on the conditions when I played, I'd recommend the 30 minute drive from Richmond Hill to check out this course.
