Nice 9 Hole Rec Course in a City Park 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 16, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Really nice park setting some wooded parts, though not much in the way of technical forest shots other than Hole #2.

Good tee pads with recent upgrades as of end of 2020 and baskets are in decent shape, though some lean to some of them.

Very active disc golf community if you're a local, you can join Facebook group to find out about events. Lots of alternative layouts to be found online and from locals. While the rec layout is a novice level challenge course, the long and alternate layouts played can be extremely technical and challenging.

Some of the best players in the country call this their home course. Good place for newcomers to learn the game by going out to Sunday doubles or other league events.

You can lose a disc on this course for sure, but it's overall a lower risk course for losing discs, no thick bramble/thorn bushes or anything like that. Water is *mostly* retrievable with a stick unless you hook your drive left on 3 or left on 9. Community is excellent at returning discs if you really can't find it.

Cons:

Almost non-existent signage and no overall course map (look online before you go or use the U-Disc app). This is apparently going to change in 2021 as the course is getting upgraded investment from the city.

Can get pretty mucky over the winter.

Can get busy at peak times, but that's true of most lower mainland courses.

Other Thoughts:

It is a public park so take care to check for walkers / other park users. #1 is a blind shot if you don't take the 10 seconds to check that you're clear to throw. I've never personally seen an issue on this course with players/pedestrians, everyone shares the space extremely well.

This is a recreational course as it's presently laid out that's structured as a pitch n putt style course in its regular layout, though each hole does have a bit of a unique look. It's not just 9 baskets in a flat, open public park with a couple of random trees, it's definitely better than that. This is one of those "the more you play it, the more you appreciate it" courses.

Overall it's a nice short rec course with decent tees and actual baskets, so a great place to practice or play alternate layouts, but it's really not a destination course. Check out Langley Passive Park or Raptor's Knoll which are 30 min drives if you are looking for full length 18 holes. Grouse Mountain if you want a course that isn't technically great but has some of the best views of any course in North America.

Although it's in a public park with walking paths, this course is MUCH better laid out in terms of public interaction / safety than other courses in area (e.g. Quilchena).

Open field between holes 2&3 is often unused and a good place for field work. Also an extra putting practice basket.

Good beginner course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 8, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

In a well maintained park. Baskets are in good condition. A lot of locals playing, very helpful with answers to questions about the course. Most baskets were easy to see from the tee box. A nice water hazard to add a little challenge.

Cons:

No overall course map at the site. Only 2 tees had signs on them. Most were even missing the pole to hang a sign on.

Other Thoughts:

A good starter course. Hole 2 plays in the trees. Most are open with a few trees. Course was busy on a Sunday morning after a rain storm. Sloshy grass in some areas. To be expected in November.

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 7, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Mundy Park is a fairly pretty but old looking community park which supports a rather odd collection of holes which don't quite come together to make a coherent course. There are a few really fun shots to throw here but for the most part, you'll find relatively unchallenging putter and midrange shots.

Fun for newer players: Because of the short differences and a few challenging shots for beginners, Mundy is a nice place for the 'noobs' to learn how to play. The 'rough' actually does have some ability to punish bad shots in a few places but you'd really have to work hard to end up in these places as an experienced player. Players who have any real experience are going to rack up easy birdies and boring pars and probably aren't going to return very often.

Cons:

Busy: We visited on a nice sunny fall day and found the course quite busy with both non-disc golfers who were walking dogs, picnicking, and flying kites and also many groups out playing the course. At several points we had to wait for pedestrians to clear even on holes under 200 feet. Likewise, because some of the fairways run so closely to eachother (a whole separate con in itself) we had to wait for other golfers to clear out.

Navigation: Because of the relative lack of numbering and a non-intuitive flow to the holes, we had to backtrack at several points during our round and also needed to ask others about the extra tone holes that are available for play in a small wooded section midway through the course.

Tee's/Baskets: Everything here is a complete mix from older, full metal baskets to heavy foil wrapped around wooden planks. You won't really know from one hole to the next what your target will be!

Filler holes: I'm not quite sure if these are in fact filler holes because there aren't really 'great' holes on either side but I'm not quite sure what to call holes that are around 150 feet that have virtually no obstacles. Several of these holes seem to be on the shorter and more boring side simply to link sections of the park together. At the same time, I would be concerned if this course were dramatically lengthened because it would likely mean more dangerous shots to blind baskets - in a park with lots of other park users, this would not be a good situation.

Other Thoughts:

For the course-bagger type of player, Mundy actually does have a memorable aspect - It doesn't stand out as a particularly poor course and it certainly doesn't make for a great course but the strange disconnected experience I had from playing it puts a smile on my face when I remember back on the course and some of the oddities about it. It has some pretty areas and a nice little river running through the course. For the average player looking for more of a challenge, your best bet in the larger area is Langley. In the end, Mundy doesn't have the terrain to make for a great course and, because it is so busy, is probably better off to serve its purpose as a nice place for beginners to cut their teeth playing the sport.

A Good Challenge 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 21, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

9 baskets and 9 numbered tee pads. Alternate holes available at the soccer field. I played 2 holes and then found my way to start playing with a group and they showed me the various tee locations as easy, back and alternate. It was a great way to play and I enjoyed the course.

Cons:

Quite muddy in the winter, but it was frosty when i played so the ground was mostly frozen. I also managed to toss a gazelle into the pond, right in the middle. I never saw it coming, and it really isnt much of an obstacle.

Other Thoughts:

I would definitely play this course again and would come out for a duck golf day. Fun and challenging, well worth it.

Cool Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 15, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is actually a really fun and somewhat challenging course. That, and every time my friends and I play it, we find more holes that make this course better each time. It has some wooded holes, open holes, holes with water hazards. This course really does have it all.

Cons:

Lot's of opportunities to lose discs. Keep an eye out for exactly where your disc lands.
Also, this course has a high water table. Bring some water proof shoes or something, if it has rained a lot recently.

Other Thoughts:

I'm pretty sure we saw Michael J. Fox on this course last month. Is that possible?

Pros:

So being a local to this course I know of the many variations to the courses we play, let say we dont play the "Rec 9" this course offeres so much space and opportunities to make some massive and insane holes.
Every Sunday we play random doubles at noon sharp, 7$. thats the best way to play some of our alternate courses.

Cons:

Poo and yes walkers, but most of them are aware of what goes on and will usually be watching out, and as for the other review that said people get hit by discs is out to lunch, thats a verry rare occurance.

Not too shabby, but still shabby 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 25, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Nice park, but nothing spectacular here. Baskets are good.

Cons:

There are some absolutely ridiculous holes here, especially the on that's like 50ft with nothing in the way.... If you want my advice take it from the tee pad in the woods about 60m back... makes it a reasonable disc golf hole. This course could use a MAJOR overhaul

Other Thoughts:

There are better courses in the lower mainland, head to Langley or Burnaby.

Enjoyable Little Nine Holer Which Could Use Some TLC! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 16, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

When you drive into the park entrance by the swimming pool, # 1 teepad is about 200 feet to the right. I had kind of a difficult time finding # 1. Mundy Park is a nice sized park, very pretty and well maintained. The course itself plays novice to intermediate. There are three short (125 to 175 ft.) wide open holes. The baskets and the teepads were both in good shape. There was a definite lack of signage. The flow of the course was good starting and finishing at the same location. I thought # 2 was a fun little hole. It's a very tight little technical shot through a 3 foot wide opening to a guarded basket maybe 150 ft. back. New teepads are currently being poured and they will add to the overall challenge.

Cons:

It's kind of a semi-pitch and putt course with the three short, open holes. The bushes which are right in front of the first tee could use some trimming up. I don't believe they mean to let them get this tall. Kind of difficult to navigate/find # 1 tee the first time playing.

Other Thoughts:

I played early on a beautiful BC morning and it was just me and a few dog lovers so I didn't get to meet any of the friendly locals. This is a fun little recreational course. A great course in which to take a beginner. If I lived close, I'd play trying to shoot that elusive negative 9.

Mundy Park 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 14, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

As you enter Mundy you can't help but become attatched to this course. The way this park is set up with the winding stream and path throughout, bushes, flowers, trees including several benches, you feel as if you are playing in someone's garden. It seems to be one of the most peaceful places I have played yet and is easy to see why the locals love it so much.

There is a practice basket off to the side of hole #9, behind tee pad #1 to warm up before playing. There is a kiosk updating players about local events and vendors located by tee one as well.

Baskets and cement tee's were all in excellent shape which added to the overall enjoyment of the course. Many holes had alternate tees as well to make the hole longer and at times more technical.

Although confusing at first, the flow of the course transitioned well, and was easy to follow.

Maintenance of the course was immaculate! The grass was mowed, plants trimmed, and garbage cans regularly emptied. Bathrooms were available at a few locations throughout the park (although I believe I only saw one close to the dg course).

Cons:

Mundy Park, although massive as a whole was rather quite small when looking at the amount of land actually used for the course itself. The entire course is very short when playing the original nine. It would be realistic to play 18 holes in under an hour, although with as much foot traffic as it gets, maybe a little longer.
The kiosk would be much more helpful to first timers as well local players if there was a layout of the course on it. Fortunately, as I mentioned earlier, the locals are so kind that they were more then willing to lend a hand and help explain.
Last, although some may find having water a con I love it! However, the color of the water made it rather difficult to locate your disc, but none were out of arms reach.

Other Thoughts:

I know if I was a local I would rate this course much higher as the amount of safari golf on this course is ridiculous. There are endless opportunities here for makeshift holes, and is perfect for practice for all level players.

However, like I stated above, the original nine hole course is most appropriate for novice and intermediate players as far as distance and challenge. I enjoyed my time here though and plan to come up and play in one of these amazing tournaments they have each year that I hear so much about. My hats off to the local club though as I can see how much effort and hard work they put in to keep this beautiful course maintained.

My Favourite 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 22, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course offers a base 9 holes that are short and excellent for beginners. The experienced players know of the 24+ teepads that can be located around park that leave for many different course layout and opportunites of differing lengths, styles, and difficulties.

Cons:

There is a fair amount of foot traffic through this course. When the weather is nice, the course can become log-jammed with different players playing different holes, many cross-over fairways on the alternate courses, and players are struck by drives on a daily basis during the summer while crossing to alternate teepads.

Other Thoughts:

Excellent variety, great course, one of my favourites.

A great day in the park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 28, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Note: the course is being modernized--new tee pads and signage coming (2020).

Course:
The regular course is of "pitch-and-putt" length and difficulty for experienced players but a very good course for newer players, with a variety of wooded and open holes, water hazards, and LH and RH fairways. The established course is nine holes with good tee pads but poorly signed.

The local crowd plays multiple course layouts and there are targets that bring the hole count to 18 +/-. The expanded course is challenging for most players, even the "pros."

Atmosphere
The local golf crowd here is very active and friendly, and there is seldom a day that you won't find someone playing "the course." The local club holds a weekly random-doubles tourney at 10:00AM (not 9:59, not 10:01) every Sunday, rain, snow, shine or Christmas holiday (Note: this used to be 12:00 but changed in 2020).

Cons:

Would love to have 18 permanent holes here! While there's a great diversity of challenges (open, wooded, water, OB) there's no elevation change to speak of.

Other Thoughts:

The crowd at Mundy is truly one of the most welcoming groups I've run into. The course "pros" are friendly and take the time to throw with beginners as well as established players, and positive engagement with the non-disc golf community is a priority.
