Kiyohara #3 Ryokuchi Koen (Green Park) 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 30, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

-- Good use of available parkland (flat for 6 holes; some elevation changes for 3 holes); lightly wooded for 7 holes and heavily tree-lined for last 2 holes
-- Paved walkways are OB, which add challenge on 3 or 4 holes
-- Baskets are decent condition and visible from most tee pads, except for the uphill #6 and dogleg #8
-- Challenge: Three grass tee pads per hole, which provide short, medium, and long (but not too long) distances; adequate challenge for beginner, intermediate and advanced players
-- Nice mix of tight and open holes
-- Variety of shots required: good
-- No epic hole, but the #8 tree-lined, tunnel dogleg would be my vote for best on course
-- Nice park, with plenty of shade surrounded by urban area and factories to the south so lacking scenic value
-- Alternate layout potentials: Very good potential to create your own challenging layouts, either in same sequence or changed-sequence Safari style. The alternate layouts that I can imagine, would be more challenging (a plus), but still in the same overall rating of 3.0 stars.
-- Parking next to course
-- Restroom (with western style toilet) by parking lot

Cons:

-- Tee pads. Regular tee pad is by the hole sign. Other two are front and back, and are sometimes difficult to find, especially on day I played (uncut grass). I never did find the back tee pad for #2 on this day.
-- Maintenance. On day I played, the grass in the holes 1 and 2 area had not been cut, but perhaps this is to limit the use of rollers on hole 1
-- Surrounded by urban area inside industrial zone with factories so lacking scenic value
-- A (very) errant disc on #8 and #9 could fly over the fence into a factory and would be tricky to retrieve
-- Course layout sign. Pretty good sign, but need to get new plastic-covered box for score cards and other handouts for which the box is intended

Other Thoughts:

The 3.0 rating for DGCR is when compared to US courses that allow heavier discs. For choices in Japan, it is well above average, so if there were a Disc Golf Japan sub-category for 150g class courses, I'd give it a 3.5 out of 5 DGJ-rating.

If I lived nearby, I would be happy to play Kiyohara Green Park as a home course and would bring friends along to create several unique layouts using the same baskets. As it is, I'd drive the 1.5 to 2 hours to come play here again. Apparently this is the "home" course of the Tochigi prefecture disc golf association. Many tournaments held here.

Good luck finding the course. It took me almost 30 minutes of driving around the area to find it. It is located in the northernmost section of Kiyohara #3 Ryokuchi Koen area; 15 to 20 minutes east of the center of Utsunomiya city. I added a map link to the site. In Japanese, but if you show it to locals, they'll be able to point the finger in the right direction.
