Nice City Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 24, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course flows pretty well and there is an obvious emphasis on maximizing the available space and lines. You play through some old growth trees over manicured park lawns. You play around the Water Center, you play around the police station, you play near walking paths, and you play near some park/playground areas. The bulk of the course forces some controlled lines to avoid the OB areas that define most of the holes.

The course is geared more for accuracy than power, though the holes along the river give you a decent grip and rip opportunity for the big arms but the risk of a wet disk is still there. The front nine tend to be the shorter holes (with a few exceptions). If you're playing in hole order, save some energy for those river holes on the back nine! You'll get the chance to try out most of your arsenal with left and right turn holes. There appears to be multiple pin placements too, which is a good sign for repeat players.

The signature hole (for me) was shooting up the sandbank at 18. It was the only really noticeable elevation on the course and it was fun.

Signage was great on the long tees, non-existent on the short, but they're typically pretty close to each other that it isn't an issue if you go the short route and walk past the longer tees to see the pin placement. The online map was helpful too, but overall navigation was straightforward. A handful of benches were scattered around the course and with the exception of the river adjacent holes, most holes had some measure of shade to help on a hot day. Restrooms were open near hole 10's pin as well.

The park was well mowed when I played and despite the wind being crazy gusty, I enjoyed my round.

Cons:

The OB opportunities are plentiful and of a staggering variety. You have the river, park roads, a busy street or two, the grounds of the Water Center (ponds, streams, water features), the parking lots/immediate areas around the police building, and some walking paths/playground/pavilion adjacent areas. What I'm saying is, keep an eye on your disc and think about what you're throwing so that you aren't doming a park patron, damaging property, or playing in traffic. It's not an unsafe course, but it's not NOT unsafe for some people, if you know what I mean. The 5 or 6 mandos should be a good clue of when you're playing with fire.

No real elevation challenges to the course, with the exception of 18 and some small hills in the front part of the course. The walk from 5 to 6&7 was a little counter-intuitive, but not ridiculous.

Other Thoughts:

This is a nice park along the river with a fun and challenging course built through it. The OB and mando issues take a little off the score for me, but I enjoyed my round here despite the 35 MPH wind gusts.

While driving to the park, it felt like I was not in what I'd call a 'great' part of town, but the park is in great shape and the proximity to the police station eased my concerns.

Great first 4 holes 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 14, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Wonderful signage with directions to next tees
Varied shots, pin placements, tee options, and of course terrain
Beautiful views across the river
Great access to the Police station
Easy access from I-35
Concrete tees
Good baskets

Cons:

Cockleburrs are abundant on holes 5 - 18 (use gloves to remove them or expect small bloody pricks)
Couple holes play close to busy street
Couple holes play close to Police station
Tees for #3 are a longer walk than the signage suggests

Other Thoughts:

Man oh man, this would be my favorite course in Wichita without the cockleburrs. I won't be back unless they're eradicated.

Great even after HUGE rain! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 10, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great design! This course has a little bit for everyone!
My son and I are decent (Not Great) and this course gave us a challenge... yet was very enjoyable. It seems a little longer than others I have played but I think that works in the courses favor. There are many trees but not so many you feel defeated before you even throw your disc :) The tee boxes are great with awesome signage (i took pics) each sign gives directions to the next set of tees!

Cons:

Only 2 things... it needed to be mowed, but in defense of the city, there has been a lot of rain lately.
the only other thing is the stickers... wow there are a lot of stickers. I can't see that ever not being an issue at this course because of the sandy nature of the soil and the fact that it would cost the city a ton of money to spray to even try to kill them off.

Other Thoughts:

I will be playing this course often! If you are anywhere near Wichita and are looking for a place to play... it is worth the drive regardless of you level!

Fun course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 18, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Trees consistent throughout the whole course
-Safe place to play as there is a police station in the park
-In a neat area with cool surrounding features
-Very well marked

Cons:

-The busy road to the outside of some holes.

Other Thoughts:

I played one of my best games on this course and I'm just a beginner. Not to say it doesn't have its challenges. The course and park have some neat features but I'm not a fan of the holes close to the busy road. The sandy hole 18 was a cool feature and I even got that hole in 2 shots. I would definitely play this course again.

Herman's Will 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 19, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Herman's Hill in Wichita is a fine representative of good disc golf in Kansas, from of the handful of courses I have played there. It has dual tees on every hole, and two basket locations for each as well. I think mostly they were in the shorter layout when I played there. There were good signs on every tee, and the baskets were fine. The park itself was very nice, with a river and other water features in play occasionally. The majority of the course is grassy, with large trees scattered throughout. There are a few holes with elevation changes that make things more fun, like 4, 5, 17, and 18. A few holes with considerable length where par 3 is no easy task, such as holes 6 and 10, each over 550' from the long tees. The water will also influence shot selection. 12 is especially tricky driving over a small creek with plenty of trees and a low ceiling. 16 crossed the same creek but much closer to the basket, making a good drive crucial. The couple of holes along the river have a little more room for error. I liked the placement of the tee boxes and pin locations, using the trees well to require different shots for each fairway. My favorite holes were 4, 5, 11, 12, and 16, but the rest were also pretty good. Overall park is very clean, grass is short, and other activities are available to for those not interested in throwing discs.

Cons:

There are several holes that are near roads, sidewalks, and other potentially dangerous misfires. Number 1, 10, 12, and 16 in particular. Not super technical, may not be a strong enough challenge to the advanced player. There is the hazard of losing discs to water, but not overly dangerous if you can trust your arm to be accurate. Wind will almost always be in play on the plains, and it got me once or twice.

Other Thoughts:

I liked the Herman Hill Park disc golf course. A fun round on a fantastic October afternoon. I was recovering from a bachelor party the previous night, and was only able to manage a 59 from the long tees. Still, I had my chances at some birdies despite a couple of unusually bad throws. There is a police sub-station near the parking area, promoting feelings of safety, and good behavior. Wichita is a town with plenty of fun things to do, and if you are enthusiastic about disc golf, I think you will count playing here as one of them.

Not much bad to say about the course. Definitely a challenge, especially in the Kansas wind, but hey, that's what this course was designed for. Takes a golfer with distance and incredible accuracy to score well on this course. For the rest of us, it's a fun challenge, and well worth the horrible score to play. Well worth a drive. this course bites back!!!! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 26, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice tee-pads & baskets. Tee pads are marked with the hole number and several holes have two pads. The scenery is nice with the river in play on many holes. The location is good and park is well maintained. The play is very good and difficulty is pretty high. Technical and Distance all in one. Good balance and mix of shots. Wind off the river is amplified so get ready if their calling for wind!!!!!

Cons:

My biggest complaint with this course is the grass (or whatever that stuff is), they mow it short but it gets stuck all over your socks and stabs you. WEAR PANTS!!!!! Signs at tee-pads are hit and miss, some are missing completely. On several holes its hard to find the next tee. You will need a map if your from out of town. River is large and the bank is steep and high; you will not be getting your disk back!

Other Thoughts:

Plays around a cop shop for those who care. Streets are close and a hazard on many holes. Its a pretty long course. 18 plays over a blind hill with a playground off to the left, be careful on a long bomb fading much left.

great course in wichita 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 22, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Beautiful setup of the course. Many of the holes were fairly difficult but still fun. Most likely the nicest course I have ever played on. Covers a fairly large area so overcrowding is kept to a minimum.

Cons:

Many people are at this park that aren't playing disc golf. One of the holes is next to a busy street so you really need to watch for cars. A few run next to a river so caution is definitely recommended, it is possible to lose disc's. Geese are also seen across the course making it more difficult.

Other Thoughts:

Very nice course, probably my favorite course I have played so far. If you live in Wichita or are going there I would definitely recommend this course.

Good variety on this course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 1, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Very nice course and well maintained. Provides a variety of shots and has multiple pin placements and tee pads. Offers challenges and different lies and tests all aspects of your game.
Here are my observations, I played from the red tees, so take that into account when reading this.
#1- Elevated tee box, works left to right. Road to your right.
#2-Close to the police station, to the left, and has cedar trees right off the box. Try a tomahawk shot here.
#3-Has a mando, must drive to the left.
#4-Drive uphill, road to the right, mando towards the end.
#5-Tight window off the box.
#6-Long hole with the river to your left.
#7-Another hole with length, not as long as 6, road on your left and finished with an elevated basket.
#8-Has pine trees in the fairway to challenge you, again you might try a tomahawk shot.
#9-Uphill drive with a low ceiling, dog leg right with a protected pin when it is in the short position.
#10-Here is a change to air it out from the red tees, be aware of the parked police cars to your left.
#11-Drive up hill, basket on a hill and trees to challenge in the fairway.
#12-You will tee off across a small pond and trees come into play with your second shot.
#13/#14-Water to your right and 2 more chances to air it out from the red tees, 565 on #13 and 333 on #14.
#15 Dog leg right past 4 big trees when the pin is closest to the river.
#16-You will have a stream to cross with your drive, or you could lay up before that. The stream runs down into the river, which was kinda cool. Again the river is to the right.
#17-Downhill drive then up the small hill and to the left. Also has a somewhat low ceiling with trees guarding the basket. This is when the basket is in the short position.
#18-A nice finishing hole. From the red tee box you have a big bush off the box to contend with. Then you have a big sand hill with trees on both sides running up to the hill. When the basket is in the long position it is on the backside of the hill and to the left. When it is in the short position it is right on top of the hill.
Overall I like this course better than its cross town counterpart, Oak Park. Just my preference and both are great courses.

Cons:

As of my visit 7/1/11 there were stickers in the fairways on several holes. As stated in other reviews you have to be on your toes at this course so that you don't put a disc into the busy streets. Also if you go when it's busy I could see having to wait to throw as there are multiple walking paths, side streets, botanical gardens, etc that are in the throwing path. First timers should print a map to help navigate this course. I would have had to do more backtracking if I didn't have my map. I thought the walk between #7's basket and #8's tee pad was a little too long. Could have used some signs on all the tee pads.

Other Thoughts:

There is something on this course for everyone. Has water threat on several holes, roads, up hill down hill there really is something here for everyone. Could be a little difficult for a novice and I could see this one being really crowded on the weekends. There are good amenities here and walking paths and a playground. If you needed assistance there is also a police station. I will definitely play this course again in the future. Just be on your toes before you throw and take a map and you will be fine.

Dynamic and fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 7, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Top notch park golf with a scenic water center in the middle of the course and beautiful view of the Arkansas River. Dual tees and pins on every hole. Actual bathroom available if its open. This course can shrink to 2/3rds of its long configuration and the local club changes the positions around quite often. Due to its mostly open nature, provides players with varying shot selection opportunities. Plenty of parking and there are some restauraunts and a Wal-Mart nearby if you need a drink or some greasy sustanance. Hole 16 is one of the coolest holes in the area from either tee to either pin. Not as crowded with casuals as Oak.

Cons:

Some holes that are a bit dangerous as you can very easily put your disc into a busy street. Namely holes 2, 3, 5 from the short tee and essecially 7. Hole 10 also borders a police substation parking lot (talk about pressure!). Park is frequently visited by non-DG'ers who seem to be in the way on Holes 12 and 16 enjoying the scenery of the water center and the brook which flows from it to the river. Signage is deteriorating, as the distances are outdated and needs replacing.

Other Thoughts:

Herman Hill was originally a single tee course (you can tell which tees are the older ones by the look of the concrete), and has had to undergo occasional revisions when the water center was installed. Alternating red and blue tees give you two additional options for layouts, along with the usual short and long, but in many cases there really isn't that much difference from the short or long tees, its often more a matter of left versus right. Its the pin positions that give Herman its differing flavors. Holes like 11, 16 and 17 play much different to their short placements versus their longs.

For some reason, Herman is not as well liked by many locals as its sister course at Oak Park despite offering players a more dynamic layout. Granted, its not as scenic and for a casual I suppose the varying pins can be confusing. If you're in Wichita, I recommend both courses for a day's play as they compliment each other well, and play reasonably fast. If you only have time for one and you're south of Kellogg, this one will scratch your itch.

Wichita Gem! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 12, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

This has to be one of the cleanest, best maintained courses I've seen!

All concrete tee pads, plenty big and in great shape. Mach baskets in very good condition. Tee signs are really good, and the map on here is great in helping navigate the course quickly. Facilities are awesome and even a cool river history center in the middle of the course.

Very good combination of length and skill shots..

My memorable holes:
3 - Nice kind of long annie shot, playing along a busy street to help hone your concentration level.
5 - Tough mando, and try to hit the gaps through the tree trunks.
6 - Wide open, but just try and not let the Arkansas river intimidate you on the left...with a slope drifting toward it...I applaud you if that doesn't affect your shot
9 - Blind shot over a knoll, and have to stay very low to not hit low hanging branches.
10 - You might say, oh that Mando isn't too tough...then you see how far right you have to go AFTER it.
13 - Let 'er rip!! Wide open straight hole to test your arm (or lack thereof).
14 - Seeming easy (but kind of long) shot framed by trees left and the river right. Now you would think that with the river on your right you might be OK, but just make sure you throw an overstable disc with a headwind, and you won't lose a money midrange like I did in the drink.
16/17 - Not only really long holes, but very intimidating again with the river tempting you to flip and donate more plastic to it. If you take par on these you are better than me.

Sand...keeps the moisture from building up too much, more solid footing. Good considering Wichita had received an unholy amount of rain in the weeks leading up to (and DURING) my round.

Cons:

Flat. Limited trees in play, making it seem simple, even though it is really not.
Sand...despite the pros of sand there are also cons. It sticks to everything. It gets in your socks and takes forever to rid yourself of. The big sand mound mid-way on 18 was the icing on the cake when my second shot landed square on top of it and I had to trudge through wet sand ankle deep to throw.

Other Thoughts:

My rating of a 3.5 is based on the fact that this course just did not have much terrain or space to work with. I feel that it made good use of the available land, but there just was not enough foliage or area to create a world-class course
That being said, there is no way you should skip this course if you are in the Wichita area. It was a very fun course (even in the miserable conditions I played in) and would make an awesome stop on a DGer's trip. Overall I'm VERY glad I have added this course to my repertoire.

Pros:

+ Good mix of long and short holes
+ Maps and signs are very well done and helpful
+ Trees provide good obstacles
+ Good amount of water hazards
+ Multiple tees and pin locations for variety

Cons:

- Sometimes grass can be very long
- Not a spectacular variety of holes, mainly only varying lengths

Other Thoughts:

This is a very good course, though it is not without it's flaws. It is kept well most of time, but when it has not been mowed, it's a frustrating walk through high grass. Also, while the holes vary in length, the majority of holes tend to be straight on shots with few forced mandatories, dog-legs, or pond shots.

The varying distances and pin locations are really nice to have. I think it might be the only course in Wichita with multiple pin locations. Scenic views near the river and woods also provide a good surrounding.

Overall it is a really good course that will keep you on your toes, but with it being spread out so much it limits the majority of its holes to distance drives.
